I think it is to allow the top to open up. Either that or it is a secret compartment that allows you to install the N64 cartridge.
The Reddit thread is saying that there's one extra feature of the set that they're saving for a later reveal, which is probably where that drawer comes into play. Some speculation that it might be Bowser's arena with a proper Bowser micro-figure, as otherwise the only representation of him in the set is a stickered tile. Which would be a bit weird for him to get left out, when Yoshi gets a figure and he's merely an Easter egg in Mario 64.
So apparently the Titanic set coming in October/November will be 12k pieces, a meter long, and $630. ...Lego's getting a bit ridiculous this year, aren't they? Wouldn't be a mystery block without a little mystery, haha. But yeah, almost certainly Bowser. Very odd set overall. So much engineering and polish went into the design... but it's literally just a few tiny micro-scale scenes and a big blank block. I feel like the pieces and resources could have been better-spent on just a bigger, more detailed Peach's Castle with lots of features. But what do I know!
It makes me wonder how far in advance they planned these ‘adult’ sets, because it’s confirmed more adults are buying Lego for themselves since the pandemic if these were planned pre-pandemic (probably likely), we might be about to enter an era of more reactionary adult sets as well
That Mario set is nice, but overall the Mario sets really do nothing for me. I want to like them, but the figures just look bad to me. If they were more like normal Lego figures I'd probably bite
Yeah, the biggest complaint seems to be the lack of traditional minifigs from the Mario line. I think it's cool that Nintendo and Lego are tying new and bold things even if it doesn't really appeal to me (the only Mario set I own so far is the Thwomp Drop one but only because I needed parts from it for a TIE Interceptor MOC). I think Lego will eventually make traditional minifigs for Mario but they're saving them for a later reveal down the pipeline. They want to milk this license and take any and all advantages of it, and probably don't want minifigs competing with these stage playsets even if they're their own product. It's like Transformers releasing the less desirable paint scheme figure or Cybertronian alt mode design for a character first, only to later release the more desirable G1 accurate paint deco with the more desired Earth alt mode design later down the road, so they can get more money from fans. Just my two cents.
That’s the main reason I haven’t bothered with this line. As it is, it’s nice that we finally have a Mario set that kind of has figures in it, but the brick-built abstractness of said figures makes me less interested. Ultimately, it’s not bad, but it’s not my thing.
I wonder if Lego is restricted from doing proper Minifigs, similar to how they've been unable to do Marvel CMF until very recently? Nintendo is notoriously tight with their licensing. Between Amiibos and the World of Nintendo lines, maybe they're prevented from doing collectible figures.
There was a rumored microscale D2C version of Peach's Castle. But I hope this isn't it. The Mystery Block is interesting but I'll likely pass. @Fenrys I don't really think the Mario line is directed at adults. My 9 year old kid loves them though! And it's been fun playing/building them with her, so there's that.
Dang weird interactive figures, and microfigures, can I just get regular Mario minifigs, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi minimum I'll take Daisy and Toadette as a bonus, or give me all the Koopa Kids, Bowser and Jr
Oh man, I hope these are true. Viking Ship sounds awesome. No doubt an homage to the old Vikings line? Either was, very unexpected, but very welcome! First the Pirate Ship, then the Castle, and now Vikings. I wonder what other themes they could pull from for Creator? As for the others, Majestic Tiger has me curious, especially at that price. The Super Mech and Mythical creatures sound right up my alley as well!
I was never going to get the Daily Bugle set (both a space and a money issue) but I'll be damned if I'm not going to get what could be the best version of my favourite Spider-Man villain in LEGO form. Thanks Bricklink!
