This. The advantage and disadvantage (the latter of physical of course if the physical media players are no longer being manufactured)

Warts and all but the Rhino version has a certain affection among collectors. I managed to get only Season 1 and Season 2 part 1. Season 3 part 1. Season 2 part 2 and Season 3 part 2 and 4 are so hard to find. Resolution wise, much better than the Shout! which I manage to complete. Certain segments of Shout you'll notice a dip in resolution though a lot of the errors from Rhino have been minimized (very overt are the ones in Fire in the Mountain).

Well, we now all know that the digital is the future is a really slippery slope! I want to watch the classics untouched, unedited with no warnings attached! Whether movies or video games. That snafu( intentional?) with Back to the Future #2 "Ooh-lala" is a sick/sad symptom when you let puritans handle streaming. Iirc, even Toy Story#2 had that blooper/gag part with Stinky Pete removed (you're lucky if you got your version before 2018).

Then we get the recent "remasters" HD version of classic video games getting nuked..the list goes on and on.

The last time the "real," broadcast versions of G1 were ever available were on Rhino VHS in like 1999. It wasn't a comprehensive full-series release, and who even owns a VCR anymore anyway? I own some of the tapes, but have no way to watch them, it wouldn't be worth the trouble to try, and the 23-year-old tapes probably look bad by now anyway.

    This is a transient hobby.

VHS tapes are surprisingly robust, despite what George Lucas would have us believe. My friend had some concert bootlegs stored in a basement, and there was actual mold on the tape edges (the part visible through the windows), but they still played fine after a run through a VHS tape cleaner/rewinder.

I've backed up some Rhino VHS tapes (wish I still had the FHE ones from my childhood) myself, it's not too expensive to get a working VCR from ebay or whatever, plus a capture card or a DVD recorder or something.

Also, the Japanese DVDs (and SD Blu-ray box) use the original broadcast masters. They of course don't have English and there are reportedly some edits for time in some episodes, but if so they're pretty minor as I only noticed an edit in just one episode (that one episode with a reporter calling Cliffjumper "Cliffjump" got cut short, probably because Cliffjumper is just "Cliff" in Japan). Wouldn't be surprised if only a few episodes have edits, but I haven't directly compared them.

Was considering trying to sync the English audio to the JP DVDs for purism's sake, but it would probably take too much time and I probably prefer the Shout DVDs overall, despite their flaws.

I still have a VCR. My friend loaned me his rare tape of "Alita: Battle Angel OVA"
I made me appreciate the movie more and some scenes are shot to shot.
As for the remastering, I'm like hating it a little more as I watch the Star Trek Series on TV. I want to see what they come up with before the CGI to help our imaginations.
Transformers issues didn't bother me then and it don't bother me now. That Starscream thing is a meme. "Will the real Starscream please stand up?"

Well, with only the Rebirth to go for the episodes we got in the US, I'm wondering what they'll do for the Japanese-exclusive series (since that hint during the Star Saber stream definitely led me to believe that we're getting some of the Japanese-exclusive series). If Hasbro even owns the rights to it, I get a feeling that we're not gonna get the dubbed version of The Headmasters.

I'm anticipating just straight subs for Headmasters' seasons, followed by Super God Masterforce and then Victory uploads, and that might be it for G1 uploads. I doubt Toei would even let Hasbro touch Zone, let alone upload it to Youtube. I know that they denied Shout Factory the rights to include it and Scramble City in their DVD collections. And past that, how many series are we gonna get on Youtube? Uploading straight through Prime would be awesome (with the likely omission of RID2001 due to its show likely being owned by Disney).

    Playlist update!
With Season 3 being put up, we once again have an issue with episode order. The Hasbro Pulse YouTube channel has the episodes listed in broadcast order, which is not chronological order. The production order is a bit better, but still has some issues. Chris McFeely put together a slightly modified version of the production order when organizing Metrodome's release of the show that does make chronological sense while watching that I've made a playlist for as well. With Season 3 done, this little playlist project of mine should be finished now. Season 4, season 5, The Headmasters, Super-God Masterforce, and Victory shouldn't have the same discrepancy in watch order and upload order. If G2 gets uploaded, I guess that would need substantial reordering, but I don't see that being a priority for Hasbro to get up onto YouTube.

That all said, here are all the playlist links:
    Broadcast Order:
    Season 1
    Season 2
    Season 3

    Production Order:
    Season 1
    Season 2
    Season 3

    Chronological Order:
    Season 1
    Season 2
    Season 3

A least with the Blu-Ray releases of Star Trek TOS, they gave you the option to watch the original versions or the remastered versions with new effects.

Perhaps it'd be better to wait and see if that's the case before complaining about it.
