Hello all - It's been a while since I did any painting/repainting of a figure; but this one I had to do. Personally, I love the plain, bland look of G1 Wheeljack, sans all the real world liveries and whatnot. For my tastes, the Earthrise Wheeljack, with all the markings, red wheels etc just never screamed Wheeljack to me. For this project, I simply took 91% isopropyl alcohol and erased just about everything. lol Repainted the rims, and threw on some # stickers for the 539. To me, THIS is Wheeljack! (edit: I will be replacing those arm panels with a 2nd WJ figure; didn't realize that was white paint and some of it began coming off while removing the liveries. Luckily, they are a separate piece that can easily be swapped out.) 9/8 update: Re-did the arm panels/backside of car with a 2nd copy of WJ for a cleaner white look without the paint damage.....photos further down in thread) 9/17 final update: on page 2
Thanks dude. As always, close up photos always look crude. Will repost photos once I swap out those parts .....which are annoying the hell out of me to look at right now. lol
Yeah , it's all a matter of which Wheeljack you identify with. Like I said in my post, I really dig the plain and cartoon-like look of him, as opposed to the real world racer. I can see how this isnt for everyone however. And when I swap out some parts tomorrow, I might leave some of the green that is around the back of the car, just to break it up slightly. (The green was the hardest to remove too, hence why the white paint suffered a bit) Stay tuned
So not much really changes in bot mode. Here he is: Yeah so, I plan to do a swap out tomorrow of those arm panels that got messed up when cleaning up the liveries. It's driving me bonkers and looks terrible in photos. I didn't add any white paint to it, that is unfortunately the battle scars of rubbing too hard to get the green off. (more on that below) *the new arm panels from a new figure will clear that up* I am also considering keeping the green on the sides of the car, exactly the part that got messed up because taking off the green was soooooooo difficult. The legs however I didn't paint, that's the original paint still, but I think I might thicken it a bit and make more prominent green lines; as in the cartoon. As for keeping the green around the backside of the "cockpit", what do you think? Keep it even though it won't really have that G1 look?
Used a 2nd copy of WJ to redo the arm panel sections; being super careful not to strip off the white paint, like I did in my first go at this. Ahhhhh, what a difference. I think I'll thicken the hood stripes when my Tamiya green arrives tomorrow and then call it done.
With Wheeljack being my favorite character I say he looks great!!!!!!! This really interested me as I really liked how the 2010 generations version was just white with some green, so great job man!!
Nicely done! I like the real-world esque tampographs but I’m a big enough wheeljack fan to be tempted to pick up another one to try this myself lol
Those are just from a basic alphabet/number sticker set that you can pick up at almost any arts and crafts store; I got these at Hobby Lobby. Ideally I would've liked to have a slightly smaller/thinner font, but these will do.
