I'm just speculating but I believe how NA has designed Conquest and Octavian is deliberately more leaning away from the very animation model derived look of MP-22 Ultra Magnus and MS' Brobdingnag.

It seems like NA is going for a toyetic take on their Ultra Magnus, for better or worse. At the very least, it's a good way to separate their UM from the others in the 3P Legends scene.

I think most people's instinct is to envision an animation styled take on a Transformers character in toy form. Not many would consider a toy like take on a Transformers toy, if that makes sense.

I enjoy MP-22, despite inherent engineering flaws, because of its animation style aesthetics. On the flip side, I like NA's Ultra Magnus because it looks like a modern take on the G1 toy due to things like the uncovered back.

Interesting take! I kind of think of NewAge as a marriage between toy and cartoon, taking cues from both to create their own definitive version. Whether or not the fandom likes that is another thing though!

It's no secret my preference is MS, heck it's even underneath my avatar. Sure, I'm sounding like that guy only criticizing the other brand for the sake of annoying fans, whatever you want to call it, I'm fine with it. If MS would present me with a similar design, I would criticize it the same way. MS Cliffjumper for example, could've been much better overall, really dislike the face. I really don't like the plastic for MS Shockwave etc etc.
But lately MS has been releasing very nice designs, which haven't gotten much criticism from me.
This is a forum with a lot of passionate people, a lot of opinions and in some cases annoyances. But it's part of the game, what can you do. I also find it annoying to keep reading the same comments on MS nylon plastic, over and over again. But it's here to stay I guess, what can you do.

I'm just genuinely surprised, as I mentioned in my previous post, about the acceptance of these design issues (at least to me they are) when there's quite a hefty price tag involved.

Well, to be fair, armored Magnus is supposed to be some kind of Cybertronian knight armor = loose pieces (I can totally understand why someone wouldn't like it, though).
Devastator is supposed to be a combiner, consisting of 6 bots uniting together as 1, not clicking 6 bots onto a 3/4 Devy body. NA got some serious understandable criticism for this design from all over the globe, not just from some people on this forum.

Yeah, it's why I like their Devastator. It looks like a good melding of the look of the G1 toy and the G1 cartoon design.

That’s totally fair, and I hear you about the repetition of stuff on the forums - It’s why I mostly lurk and only post every so often (I think I’ve been more active today than I have in years)
I think the nylon plastic for MS is a big deal breaker for a lot of folks - I have their Ecto Prime, and I love it - think the transformation is genius, and I hate holding it entirely. Feels like I’m handling chalk. And now with their improved material quality, they are having a lot more tolerance issues now than they used to.

Theres no harm in liking what you like - what I DO take issue with however (and this isn’t directed at you specifically, more just a general forum/internet wide vibe) is the shitting on other companies as if to justify your own purchases - Example being the Devastator war currently - People were/are mad as all unholy fuck that NewAge is just sticking bits on an action figure, and will swing their tits and/or cocks around being like “Magic Squares Kibble ACTUALLY does something!” But for most people, that “something” is get thrown in a parts box. No different than the NewAge action master shell! Or will be like “Fuck me - NewAge Bee’s feet. LOL, WHAT ARE THOSE! LMAO!” When, as you’ve just said - Cliffy’s face looks like a smacked arse.

It just reeks of elitism - you know? I myself am pretty much all in on NewAge, and there design aesthetics are to me, top tier. But I’m not gonna shit all over MS stuff to justify my purchases. I was disappointed/scared when Bee and Cliffy were coming out, thinking I’d backed the wrong horse up until I had them in hand - at which point I couldn’t believe how amazing and small the NA boi’s were. But there was that hesitance at first - same thing with the new Primes. I’ve pre-ordered NA, but I’m pretty tempted by MS 2.0!

I guess what I’m trying to say is you can be a fanboy without being a dick about it (again, not specific to you) - the stuff you call design flaws I actually really enjoy! I LIKE seeing wee parts that show it’s a transformer - I like seeing the cleverness of compacting the arms to get a more slender cab! So it’s all opinion! Nothing’s objective in TF’s, or in life at this point. So.. Aye! ‘Mon the NewAge! (And IF, And MS, and.. you get the point)

Let's see ... first time who buy MS version UM price is about 95$ ( MS-B18W - white Prime and MS-P02 transporter armor upgrade kit ) probably a similar price as NA UM. Looking at the price it doesn't matter which version you choose. In this case will win transformation, appearance and probably size trailers how many vehicles can fit in it ( which someone mentioned ).

But MS does the exact same thing! It just compacts down a wee bit better to get stored in your parts bin as I said. No one’s actually displaying their MS constructions with that fucking big drill thing! and I’m not saying that both companies don’t deserve criticism for this design choice - they totally do, but again, it’s absurd to call fowl of one, when the others the same fucking thing!

Agreed, stuff happens on this forum, including elitism.. on both sides (NA and MS) and sometimes I am part of this as well, ain't gonna lie, triggered by elitism from 'the other brand'. As I mentioned earlier, there's a lot of passion on this forum, which can express itself in annoying ways.

It's insane. I remember when MP-22 was revealed all the static he got for being an all-in one rather than a white Prime with armor. And folks responding "Of course that's the way they did him, how could you engineer armor that fits around prime without it being either a complete brick or terribly out of proportion?"

This was 2014 and we were talking about Masterpiece figures. Now we're at the point where we have a well-articulated, beautifully-sculpted Armored Magnus in friggin legends scale? And the reaction is...people hating it to death?

    Not me. Sign me up.

Absolutely, I’ve done it in the past, and I’ll no doubt do it again in the future! And I’m not one of these people that are like “shh! Just let people enjoy things!”, because for me the discussion is one of the best parts! Everyone is just as valid to voice their criticisms and dislikes just as much as people are valid to voice their joy and love for something - both can co-exist. I just hate when the FIRST thing anyone see’s when looking at this really cool reveal is “Man, this shit sucks.”

Absolutely. I was scrolling through the gallery saying to myself "This is an actual masterpiece-level figure and it fits in the palm of my hand. It's insanely toon accurate but still has the white prime homage. I bet Legends scale collectors are over the moon"

And then it's just negativity :lol

On this part we disagree, which is fine. MS Long Haul and Hook combine to form the torso as it's supposed to be. Bonecrusher and Scavenger combine directly with Hook. There are no extra parts in between those 4 bots. There's only the pelvis/upper legs to which Scrapper and Mixmaster attach. The lower arms attach to the arm bots.
And yeah, there won't be a lot of people who will display the drilling machine, but at least it's an option :D

He looks really good. Only things I'm not a fan of is that random red square on the back of core mode, and the fact that this is probably really complex at a tiny scale, which my fingers tend not to like. If I were a legends-scale collector, I'd be over the moon at this, it's really incredible.

According to NewAge on Facebook, there will be a couple of changes to the final figure…

Criticism doesn't always ≠ negativity. "One person's nitpick is another's deal-breaker." "Your mileage may vary." There are some of us here who have been Legends collectors for years now and can't help but expect it to evolve in certain ways... which leads to "Expectation is the thief or joy." And then there's the mindset of "Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative."

Sorry, I'm speaking in quotes now :p

That's the double-edged sword that is freedom of speech: You're gonna hear both "good" and "bad" stuff get spoken.

For me, constructive and well-thought criticism of the figures here is okay. What is not okay is attacking people. There's this guy on the NA BBB and CJ page that called the people who defend NA BBB and CJ idiots. And while he may have his points because, let's face it, those figures have many flaws. That sort of name-calling is totally unnecessary, unhelpful, and potentially hurtful. We're not blind, ya know. We know those feet are battleships.

Okay, I'm rambling and will shut up now.

    Peace, Ramjet555! :D

That makes perfect sense. The armoured Magnus isn’t an animation thing, it’s based on the toy. If you’re making a figure based on the G1 toy, that’s the place to take the design cues from. Designing a toon based Magnus that uses the toys “armour gimmick” isn’t going to do either style the justice it deserves.

Legends scale figures stop looking better to me than many full on MPs challenge.

IMHO, this thing sucks. Also IMHO the MST version also sucks. Sorry if that offends anybody - that's just my opinion, but both of these figures do enough wrong that I just can't pull any punches. The open back and arms on top just look sloppy but the real dealbreaker is that awful looking matrix chamber, and it looks like the core robot has the same ridiculous double chest that their Optimus has. For MST, he looks great but he achieves it by Legoforming and leaving a third of his parts behind to just... hang out somewhere. Also MST's articulation is pathetic due to the armor restricting his leg movement.

Now it's true I own the MST version but I bought it specifically to tear it up for a custom that I will almost never transform (he's actually in truck mode right now cuz I wanted to see if he could still do it after my mods but I'll be transforming him back and he'll likely stay in bot mode forever). For me, I'm going to keep using the MFT version as my legends Magnus.
