The fight for equality, with the Autobots preferring non-violent means to the point of waging a violent war on the radical Decepticons with the exact same goal doesn't only not work, it doesn't make sense. If the Decepticons' planet conquering, militarized population MO isn't there from the beginning, how does the war even escalate to the point that it comes up later? Why doesn't Optimus just look around and say, "You know what? A non-violent solution would've been nice, but we're clearly past that now." Once the Senate or whatever is abolished, what keeps the war in motion until it gets to that point?

This is a HUGE logical hole that IDW1 just never got around to. I haven't read enough of IDW2 to see if they've found a satisfying answer, but I doubt it.

This is what I find to be the biggest problem with the IDW1 origin - I even made a thread a while ago complaining about how it doesn't make any sense.

There was an article that was called "The Measure of a Man" about IDW Megatron that made the cause for why he was a good characterization and better than the cliche
"imma gonna take over da world" villain .

It doesn't necessarily mean that, but it does leave it an open question. But I think that's legit. I mean, In real life there are plenty of examples of oppressive governments Turning activists into monsters

I didn't interpret it like this at all. I saw it more as Trepan was planning to wipe Megatron's brain clean of his revolutionary ideas, but only got as far as removing his memory of the treatise he wrote, leaving only bits and pieces. Megatron didn't forget how to use peaceful means, he just had to figure out what he intended over again, and was simply scarred with having the ideas removed from his mind, albeit temporarily. Remember, Trepan had barely scratched the surface, it wouldn't have been enough to truly change Megatron's opinion. It was more the trauma that affected him than the act itself.

Ahh yes, just imagine; it would definitely invite a global resistance I can see it now.

if I’m reading you right here, complete agreement. It amazes me that the original cartoon did better with the logic of the conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons than IDW 1 ever did. I’m talking in the broad strokes of military coup opposed by regular guys wanting their old lives. There was obviously the silliness and logical holes in individual episodes.

How far are you in IDW 2? IDW 2 Autobots seem fine with the government. It’s pretty much just a straight violent coup by Megatron with followers who want more than what’s offered by the government. It’s not the mess that IDW 1 turned into......yet.

It’s frustrating because Roche really gets “it” with Transformers.

After sitting down and reading IDW2 front to back, I 100% agree with this take.

Though personally, I waiting for the run of IDW2 to be over (so in about 10 years) to fully compare the two, at the moment, I prefer IDW1 Megatron because he has a complete character arc that started with Megatron Origins and ended with Lost Light #25.

reading through this thread gave me an idea. I wonder how the two Megatrons would react to each other if they ever met. It’s sure to be an interesting conversation.

Probably like what happened when Megatron met Megatron X Cyberverse.

IDW megs will always be one of the best representations to me. he felt like a real person, with highs and lows, goals and losses, wins and failures, success and tragedy. it felt like the most realistic depiction of the life of a galactic warlord

I have always been sad that Roche & Roberts didn't co-write anything after Last Stand. I thought they were a perfect pair. Roberts has a great sense of wit and dramatic irony, and always explores really cool ideas, but he gets too attached to his characters. Roche is much more brutal and willing to blow circuits all over the page, but his larger concepts (the Noizemaze) didn't quite hang together for me. Both of them really complimented each other. Hopefully IDW2 will give the two of them a book at some point.

IDW2 reads a lot like a better Netflix or Prime Wars Megatron to me.

I love IDW1 Megatron so much that IDW2 Megatron is actually part of what's giving me a hard time getting into IDW2, tbh. In IDW1, TFP, TFA and Prime Wars Megatron was one of my favourite characters, although he only trumps Soundwave in TFA because TFA Soundwave isn't really Soundwave in my opinion.

IDW2 Megatron reminds me of someone I can't name because of Rule 13. I love Termagax though?

    Moving on,

You can always tell when somebody hasn't read Eugenesis.

James Roberts is perfectly capable of putting his characters through no end of hell and allowing them to die horribly.

Rewind came back. That was lame as hell. He couldn't even really allow Megatron to die because he got a quantum duplicate somewhere.
