I didn’t read that as mocking. I think he was giving you credit for actually having a good, solid, Unpopular Opinion (given that about half the opinions posted here are anything but unpopular). But what do I know?

Honestly, as impressive as the sheer size of haslab Unicron is, I feel like there's no scale that could ever feel right in comparison to other TF figures. It almost feels kinda... pointless? It's the same deal with their ML Galactus which is like... It's cool. I'm glad it's there but also like... IDK maybe the wow factor has been lost on me a little?? Also, the idea of massive corporations doing crowdfunding campaigns that get more attention and support than indie creators reads a little dystopian to me tbh

Completely agreed. Modern figures are just doing less and less for me. Take the new Kingdom Sideswipe. The only thing I can really praise it for is being just a really good G1 Sideswipe. Meanwhile, take Universe Sideswipe. I hate the way it looks personally, but at least it gives me some sort of emotional reaction. I feel something when looking at it, as opposed to the bland nothing that Kingdom offers. And then I could immediately launch into some of the interesting things it does, like the dramatic head reveal, or the transforming gun, or the Sunstreaker alternate transformation. But all Kingdom does is be a good Sideswipe.

 

I definitely feel the other way. Universe Sideswipe was a nice hold over until I got a better Sideswipe. Kingdom, even Siege, Sideswipe knocks the Universe out of the water on posability and weaponry.

It would need to be the size of a 2-car garage when laying down. He should be able to very carefully pinch Kingdom Galvatron in two fingers and toss him into his mouth. I'd estimate a mass somewhere in the 3500 KG range, but only with lots of hollow parts (otherwise we're talking Gundam levels of mass, lol). And if we're gonna go that far, he needs an actual acid vat and conveyor system to melt down your crappy Prime War Trilogy figures that are no longer wanted...!

For what it's worth I share a few of your unpopular opinions. I don't get how SS86 Hot Rod is supposed to be the God Figure, it has a lot of problems. Also about Hasbro's distribution and quality control... I myself consider scale totally unimportant, though if it were allowed to get TOO out of hand, it would understandably cause some woes. But quality control is important; thin, brittle plastic panels really stress me out. I have to handle them so carefully.

I'm in the middle of changing SS Grindor into helicopter mode for the first time and I had to put it down to relax for a while, because that vein on my forehead started tipping over my monitor.

 

SS86 Grimlock is a great figure but a garbage movie figure.

 

idk i feel like i didn't phrase what i said correctly honestly. Like I'm not saying that Unicron should have been bigger. THat would be insane it's a huge figure and that's really cool, but also like... making this whole huge deal about having a big toy for a big character feels weirdly pointless when it doesn't even communicate the actual scale correctly? Not that it isn't cool but part of it feels like yeah okay there's a big toy? now what?

 

I definitely don't feel the same way. I through and through will usually prefer figures that get across the general feeling of the character for me, not because of how "fresh" of a look they are. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for new takes and interesting designs for all of that but at the same time most Classics figures don't really do that for me. And I usually see these figures on such high pedestals and I don't really see the hype, not to say they're all bad but I just feel like people overinflate their godliness. Take Classics Mirage for example, I've seen several people talk about how good he is and besides the alt mode I think he's genuinely one of the ugliest figures to exist. But people still love him because he "tries something new." But different doesn't always mean better.

I actually liked a lot of the Universe molds, but in my heart, I always knew these weren't what I've always wanted. And I was ok with that because we did have some fun reimaginings of the characters. Universe Optimus is still a great figure. Deep down though, I still wanted the characters I watched television, and I figured I'd never really get them that accurate.

And now, years later, Earthrise and Kingdom are finally giving me the figures I've always wanted. They're still fun, have posability that's far better than some Universe toys, and most importantly, they look just like the cartoons. I'm incredibly happy.

I certainly understand that this is not what some fans would want. They didn't grow up on G1 or they don't care for the G1 cartoon aesthetic. And that is absolutely fine. No one has to like anything. The problem comes when some fans act as if these G1 accurate figures should not exist at all. As if there's something completely wrong with looking like the cartoon. As if the fans who would like the toys to resemble the characters on the show don't deserve to have them. Some fans think only reimaginings with no real strict adherence to the G1 cartoon should exist, completely forgetting that's what the Universe and Thrilling 30 lines had already done. We've already had reimaginings of the characters. It's ok for the brand to focus on cartoon accuracy for a while. It's ok for those fans to have a turn. If someone doesn't like these new toys, then just wait.

I learned that being patient pays off. After 35 years, I'm finally getting the toys I've always wanted. Patience truly is a virtue.

I'm fine with my Energon Unicron.. it's a bit of a shellformer, can pose, got articulated hands, has gimmicks (chomp-chomp and lights), but didn't have to sell a kidney, so I fell like I kinda won out.. Aside size and slightly better esthetics, I find that WFC Unicron isn't that impressive, considering the price tag, he's still a shellformer and ends up with enough kibble to be annoying and the hour long transformation from what I've read just isn't for me. And I find that for figures, it's one of the few cases that bigger isn't better, as you just can't play with a gigantic figure like you could a much smaller one, and nothing could ever scale with it as even in the cartoon, its scale changed several times. And honestly, I have Power Rangers stuff that is huge, also transforms (yeah, very limited compared of course), lots of gimmicks, but it did cost me less than 50$, and that's a LOT of plastic and such for that price.

 

I mean I could have done that but the point of the thread is Unpopular Opinions. Making an argument on why I thing you're wrong goes against the spirit of the thread and potentially discourages others from voicing their opinions.

I'd rather admit that your opinion is unpopular and therefore precisely the point of the thread.

ML Galactus is actually pretty much perfectly in scale with other Marvel Legends. The Galactus ML is 32" tall, Galactus is canonically 28′9″ which is pretty close to 1/12th scale.
