New release comes with different wing tips. They're longer and pointier. Since they make up the arm cannon they in turn make for a new looking weapon. There's also an effect part to go with it. Many people have expressed interest in having just those parts being made available to those who purchased the original.

Only other changes I've observed are that the silver grill panels in his shoulders are spring-loaded on the new one. I can only imagine it's to make them easier to dig out for transformation to 'bot mode, not that it seems necessary given how much you can open his shoulders anyway. They don't spring all the way up into 'bot mode placement but it can still get in the way when compressing them back for alt mode.

    *ed:
I suspect that has to do with the screws being able to turn while shifting the armatures (the washers should stop or limit that, but I think the paint might be sticking too well between washer and screw head). Going from 'bot to alt, the inner-most joint on the right tries to tighten the screw. Since it's already pretty snug, it just doesn't want to go - I know mine wouldn't let me move it more than a few degrees before I dug out the screwdriver. Left side tries to tighten when going back to 'bot mode, so it already backed off a bit from the transition to alt.

I'm thinking I might pull those screws again sometime and put a bit of thread locker on there just to stop that from happening. Had to do that with my IT-02 "Dinobot" ankles for the same basic reason.

The figure you're thinking of was a redeco of the G2 Dreadwing/Smokescreen two pack as Megatron and Starscream

According to the wiki, the toy was only released in a limited run in Ohio until it was redeco'd again as Beast Wars II BB. The toy you likely had was G2 Dreadwing:

Although if you did have the actual Megatron version, it would probably be worth alot of money.

This figure is based on the IDW version of Megatron after his original body was damaged beyond repair and is significantly overpowered

    There's even an official toy

That was redeco'd into G2 Dreading

So yeah, it isn't based on G2 Megatron

I have this figure on pre order, together with IT-01 Megatron. The Tyrant is in stock now, but IT-01 still isn't, and no real clue when it will.

The shop will send the two together, when they're both in. So maybe there is still a change to cancel the Tyrant. These two would be my first MPs. What would you guys advise, with all the reports of broken ones etc.? Should I try to cancel?

    Thanks

Quick update for my figure. It originally arrived with no issue. I transformed him to his bomber mode, and recently transformed him back. That's when I noticed the left foot being loose and having the same issue as others here.

Just go back and read past 1 month's issue reported, I will cancel it if it's my decision. After all, it's a $100 toy.

I would. Mines broke waiting for replacement parts which will get here god knows when. But now I'll just be worried about when the other leg will break. Not worth it to me in retrospect.

But isn't it safe to say/guess IDW probably used the G2 ATB Megatron as inspiration for the comic?
If so, it in fact is indirectly based on said G2 Megatron.

Don Figueroa has commented quite a bit on this design. I do not recall him ever mentioning the G2 ATB version though.

Considering the most famous G2 Megatron is the purple and green tank followed by the purple and black tank and this one is pretty much a re-colour afterthought, it's pretty safe to assume it isn't

I still think this is a fantastic figure, even with a broken ankle that I know with be resolved by both my retailer and GT.
    Does that part suck? Yes
But I would hate to see a fellow board member pass on this now, only to get a 2nd hand unit a couple years from now for triple the price and with no way to get a replacement part.

If it helps, mine has a broken ankle, but is still able fully transform and firmly stand. I am awaiting replacement LEGS (I requested both since this is a known issue)

I also understand that not everyone has a large budget due toys. So in the end, it comes down to personal preference.

Is there not a worry that their replacement legs are made of the same material as the ones your figure came with and thus just as susceptible to the same breakage?

Of course, but I suspect the main reason they broke in the first place was using a flat-tip screw, combined with over tightening.

Not defending the material choices used for this figure, but it is still a fantastic mold.

Okay, so you would say it's coincidental that IDW used the stealth bomber for Megatron?

I always figured it was because of the stealth bomber toy at the end of G2, especially since it seemed Hasbro by then had a large part in the design of the comic characters IDW used.

I really don't know which one of us is closest to reality, but that's how I saw it.

Without actually going and asking the people that worked on the comic, we'll have no way of knowing 100% but I would lean toward the negative simply because the toy didn't really exist to the general market. I read an article once that they use Mid-western States as test markets for all sorts of things, notably fast food so I would take and educated guess and say that Hasbro tested the repaint in Ohio, it didn't sell as well as they hoped (probably because they had just sold the original Dreadwing/Smokescreen two pack not long before), so they cancelled the mass release and the mold was put to bed until it was resurrected for BW2.
