Allegedly this new release is. The 4:3 version is still high def and supposedly looks better than the 30th anniversary version.

What kind of TV did you get? Do you have a 4K blu-ray player?

So it doesn't have a 4x3 full frame uncut in 4K? That really sucks.

This is why it should've been just a TV option to crop down or watch in full frame, instead of including another copy of the movie in 1080p. That's really dumb. This all relates to the whole cinematic cropping or "faux widescreen" Sure, it fits my modern screen but perspectively still looks off. Besides, watching 4x3 on a widescreen TV isn't as terrible with pillar bars on the sides.

Can’t wait for mine, though I’m bummed delivery’s been delayed to Saturday. I don’t mind the ratio, I’ve only watched it uncropped a handful of times out of the ten million times I’ve watched it. I saw it in the theater as 7yo when it was first released so I’m good watching it at that ratio from here on out. I’ve seen it in theaters, owned the vhs, dvds, the blu ray & could not be more thrilled to have it in 4K!

I can't stand knowing there's details....really GOOD details....that are fully drawn and animated that are cropped out for no good reason just to make the movie look "cinematic."

I've never watched the "widescreen" version in any format. I'm a 4:3 purist when it comes to this movie cause I want to see EVERYTHING.

The full frame version on this and the 30th release have a little bit of the image missing on the sides that are present on the widescreen!

And the Widescreen has images missing from the top and bottom though. Kinda a lose/lose situation.

It was cropped in the cinema. This is trying to recreate the cinematic feel. It works. I’ve zero problems with it being widescreen. Losing an itty bitty portion of inessential edge art doesn’t bother me in the least.

Purist would be to watch it as the director intended. Just as with live action movies there is material that is filmed that is not intended to be seen. Same with animation, we animate more of the the figure than is visibile so we can get a correct sense of weight for the characters. I'll not go further into it, since there are many threads that already discuss that aspect.

Good example from my teacher at the 04:37 mark:

I dont have a 4K Player, but this does come with a blu-ray disc. Is it the same blu-ray transfer as the 30th?

No digital copy + no uncropped version = no buy

if this had been a movie I didn’t own a million times over I would feel differently, but it’s not.

Good point, except TF:TM was animated fullscreen with the knowledge that it would be shown that way on television screens of the day, and cropped for the (limited) widescreen theatrical release, so BOTH versions are "what the director intended".

I'm very disappointed we didn't get a 4K fullscreen version with this release. I think the details would look much sharper that way. Watching the widescreen version on modern day 4K screens feels like we're a little TOO close to the drawings and the roughness of the animation is way more evident. This wasn't a Disney film. Not saying it's bad animation but the amount of cleanup work done is much less than on a bigger budget film. Zooming out a little and showing more of what was animated is a nicer way of watching it, IMO.

No. The blu-ray disc (fullscreen version) from this new release is from the same master as the 4k UHD widescreen disc.

Look, this topic has been discussed to death, but I stand by what I said.

Your argument isn't even valid cause the scenes I think are the most important to see in full aren't even the animated ones; they're the static shots.

The few frames of the movie that show Wheeljack and Windcharger's corpses are some of the most important to me, cause it was a sad and sobering experience to see one of my favorite characters in the cartoon lying there, lifeless. In the widescreen version, you see Wheeljack cut off on the top of the frame. In the 4:3 you see his entire torso, with the giant tear in his chest that killed him.

I think details like that are incredibly crucial, so I'd rather have the option of seeing them instead of having them cut off completely to give the false sense that this was a widescreen movie when it wasn't.

Purist my ass. That’s like a SW fan saying they’re a purist for preferring Lucas’s awful revisions over the og theatrical release. You’re no more pure than me for being ok with the theatrical cut, get over yourself.

Well fuck, we're never gonna solve this just by arguing amongst ourselves.

Let's get Nelson Shin and Flint Dille in here and clear it up.

If Nelson Shin says that he had the animators draw and animate all that extra artwork that he never wanted the public to see and that was his intention and vision all along, then I'll admit the "real" version is the widescreen.

But what if he says he was instructed by Hasbro to make sure it looked good on the then-current 4:3 television screens cause they were counting on it being on home video and eventually syndicated as part of the regular series as well? Then who would be the "purist?"

Let's reach out to Mr. Shin and settle this argument once and for all.

Yes that is unfortunate. There was a really poor quality DVD transfer from Metrodome in 2005 called the "Reconstructed" release that shows the entire film strip, even the fuzzy edges. Would have been nice to have that uncropped version in 4K with color correction and modern day film cleanup tools.

I just dug up that old DVD and took a comparison screenshot. There's a little bit more outside the frame of the fullframe Bluray, but not much to cry over. I'm fine with the slight crop we got in the fullframe, just wish it were 4K.

Anyone else think the colors on the 4K widescreen are a little too saturated? Look at Bumblebee's Autobot symbol below... more natural color in the fullframe Bluray IMO.

Hm, I was going to skip this new release bc the 4k is widescreen, but the claim that the 2021 1080p bd is improved from the 2016 version is tempting me.
