The only way to make that work is to work the many repaints out so that some come from one and the others from the other. That'd need some serious conviction about the success possibilities of the repaints (would TTMall be enough?) in order to take the plunge.

Having Swipe and Red Alert as the repaint gives them two primary figures that'll sell well for set of tooling and r&d etc. and I'd expect that to be the more likely outcome. Happy for them to prove me wrong of course!

 

plus with the retooling and them being two separate molds means that you get infinite possibilities of repaints, like shattered glass, toy repaints and all of the other molds of sideswipe.

TT aren't saying that at all. This release isn't called Nightbird, it's called Nightbird Shadow.

They'll probably have some elaborate backstory for her, like she was reactivated in the 90s and reformatted using Arcee as a base. Or she's from a different timeline.

 

Didn't they already give her the reasons for why how she escaped and got a car alt-mode back when her first toy came out?

To me, at least, they're definitely telling anyone G1-inclined that this is the same character.

Agreed, but that's like making a Goldbug and saying he's Bumblebee (MP21G says hi, I suppose?). The G1 toon Nightbird didn't transform.

Nightbird went on afterwards to learn how to transform etc. and appeared in Legends. I'm perfectly happy that this is that Nightbird. But it's not a representation of the Nightbird in the episode of the toon.

 

MP-02 and MP-49 weren't how those two characters were represented in the toon, yet here we are.


Besides with how Takara handles Transformers in Japan, anything G1 related becomes part of the Generation 1 cartoon, thus ending up in the MP line, and vise versa, like with Road Rage or Delta Magnus (it use to be all of Transformers rather than just G1 Transformers and that was far too much even for them).

They will prioritize what happened in the original cartoons proper, but really anything that has appeared in any G1 material that has released in Japan is fair game for the MP line for Takara. Same with BW.
So since that's the case, I'll be waiting here for the MP Prime and Megatron with their G2 capes. Someone alert me when they do.

 

Nemesis wasn't in the toon, though. Ultra Magnus v1 was a toy homage. MP22 was toom UM.

But I agree that they're definitely open anything Japan has linked to the lore. MP Kiss Players when?

not the same thing as saying that the MP is a representation of how she looked in the cartoon, which is what I interpreted you meant from your original post that I quoted.

Hoping the tweak the plastic , I get the complaints of MP-45 feeling too light, I feel the same about Blackarachnia. Something a little more denser and heavier to help him feel solid would be nice.

To me, Masterpiece was like this perfect girlfriend that you adored and thought was an angel and could do no wrong, and then you find out when you were out of town once she fucked the janitor in your building, and when you confronted her about it she said "Yeah, it was no big deal." And you're like, "Yeah, it's a very big fucking deal, how can I ever trust you again?" When I saw that MP Nightbird, I was like, "My beloved Masterpiece has been canoodling with the mainline."

And maybe she tries to make it up to you, maybe a few days later she puts on that... dress... (or an MP Cliffjumper test shot surfaces, same difference), and you think "Ohhhh shit, there's the girl I fell in love with!" But in the back of your mind it's always there, the janitor, she fucked the janitor... and you just never can look at her quite the same way again.

And, you know, I like the mainline, there's some good stuff going on there... it keeps the lights on and the pipes don't leak... but it needs to stay the hell away from my Masterpiece.
