    What do you mean?

I'd say he's pretty darn strong. Early game he's as useful a member in physical throw downs as the Warrior. Late game if we're using the vancian magic system, I'd expect he'll still be pretty useful. Bonus content was the only reason I'd use White Mage and Black Mage. None of the FFI bosses really needed the full support of White Mage, and Black Mage completely falls off at the end. Once you get to class change the Knight and Ninja pick up most of the early spells you need to support the party.

In the original game, INT had no effect on the damage output of spells. Meaning Red Mages did just as much damage as Black Mages.

Hilarious. I think that’s probably fixed. I recall that and literally all the weapon secondary effect were bugged. As was blind.

No. Being on mobile is an automatic blacklist. What a dumb move by Squeenix not to also port them to consoles. I would have liked the SNES FF2. I kind of liked it, but never got to finish it. I already own 1 and 3 on the Classics.

If you have a PSP, 4 on there is the best. Second best is the GBA one.

Strongly disagree. These shouldn’t be on consoles. It’s the wrong platform for them.

II is very weird. The leveling system is easily manipulated and the story is not great, but it also introduces a lot of FF mainstays.

Yeah, that’s the central paradox of it. A lot of what Final Fantasy will come to be has it’s roots in FFII, even as FFII turned out to be a pretty terrible game.

When I mentor people I talk about “Good Failures.” It’s when you do your research, try something new, fail, but learn important lessons you can then use going forward. FFII is a good failure. It helped create a lot of things that would be important visual and world building touches that make a Final Fantasy game a Final Fantasy game. It swung for the fences with an innovative system that was something new for the series. And it helped establish the importance of narrative arcs and guest characters that would be one of the things that set this franchise apart.

And honestly it’s a failure that almost works. Better gating systems so you don’t wander into over powered monsters would help. Tweaks to the mastery system like HP and MP increase automatically as your spell and weapon mastery grows. Letting spell casting outside of battle count towards spell mastery. A training room/dojo system. A vitamin store to let you increase stats using gil. Any or all of this being present would have helped the game a lot.

Final Fantasy V is today. This is one of the most overlooked entries in the series, and really deserves a look. Once again, no bonus content apparently but still FFV is a great game, so I was looking forward to this entry.

    One to go.

I haven't finished Number One since work and family life amped up since Summer, but been pre-ordering these one by one, so I'll remember to install V next chance I get, and looking forward to VI's release. Maybe during some of the holidays, I can finally catch up.

What's your opinion on this remaster? V is my favorite Final Fantasy and I'm curious if this version is worth getting on Steam or if I should just stick with the GBA version (never got the previous Steam version because I hated the graphics). Kind of disappointed this new version doesn't have the bonus content from GBA, but I've also never made it far enough in the GBA version to get to the extra content, almost beat the old PS1 version though.

Shaun Musgrave has a good review of it at Toucharcade:

‘Final Fantasy V’ Pixel Remaster Review – Gilgamesh the Great – TouchArcade

The general story for all of these are they’re great ways to play the game, but all bonus content has been stripped. For FFV that’s less of a deal. For FFI that’s a huge deal.

I think that if you can, buy the pixel remasters. FFVI is coming in a few weeks and that will round out the set for me. They’re on sale right now too if you haven’t gone for any yet.

I took a summer and played I-VI a few years back. And they’re all good. II is the roughest to play through, but I think if you have never played I-VI you should. A lot of the series DNA is formed in those entries. VII is a massive pivot towards Steampunk that will change the series forever, but a lot of the later games owe a lot to those first six.

I paid for my pre-order of VI last night, so that completes the collection for me. Now it's a matter of me taking the time to finish #1.

I started FFI and decided to wait so I could play them all together again. That’s my summer plan for any free time I have. Along with catching up on my stack of Marvel Epic collections.
