    Makes sense.

This is how I rank the Final Fantasy games I've played:

    1. VI
    2. IX
    3. IV
    4. VII
    5. V
    6. XII
    7. II
    8. VIII
    9. I
    10. III
    11. X
    12. XIII
    13. XI

Have yet to play XV and I'm never making the mistake of touching an online FF game ever again.

I do hope Square brings this collection to physical discs for the PS4. I'd buy it instantly.

Good list. I might quibble with the rankings here and there, and of course for me II is near the bottom, but good list.

I will say this about FFII: it may be one of the most important entries. I may not like it but it introduces a lot of things that make Final Fantasy …. well, Final Fantasy.

If you are only judging FF MMO's by XI, you are doing yourself a disservice.

FFXIV is totally different than FFXI.

There's a free trial for FFXIV that includes the base game "A Realm Reborn" and the first expansion "Heavensward". Easily over 100 hours of content

Currently, the game is even surpassing World of Warcraft in the genre.

Well I'm not an online gamer as it is, I play video games to get away from people, not interact with them. However, I gave XI a shot since I got it for $10 on the 360. Of course, after paying for 3 months it pretty much equaled full price for something I played for about 3 hours and never went back to.

The biggest issue is I couldn't figure out what the hell I was doing and even though I was asking for help in the town I was in, no body bothered to help me, so after losing a few fights, I rage quit.

I’m not going to judge folks for liking XI and XIV, I’d just say for a lot of people MMORPG games aren’t for us. The odds I ever play XI or XIV is precisely zero. That’s not a knock on the games themselves, just the fact I do not play those games and never ever will.

As a side note: FFXIV is weirdly effective with the sales pitch. Every time I hear about I hear roughly the same thing. It’s starting to get creepy.

I’m with you. If people want to play MMORPGs, I don’t care. But I have zero interest in them, or even in online games of any kind. Playing games is what I do during my downtime, and I don’t want to deal with other people when I’m playing.

I enjoy some MMO's, though in FF XIV's case as well as others, that monthly subscription rate isn't anything to sneeze at.

Tomorrow is the day on Steam, and Thursday on Mobile. Who’s in and for what?

I’ve decided I’ll just be buying FFI in the first batch. I don’t care enough about FFII and FFIII to want to buy them again, and if the old apps reach their end of life I’m ok with that. Probably going to buy FFIV and definitely FFVI in the next wave. I’ll have to wait and see on FFV.

Not getting any of these new releases because of the extra dungeons getting left out. I'll stick with my gba copies

LoL, you've never played the NES / Origins version, have you? In the original, your stats had a yin and yang effect, where raising one stat would lower an opposing one every third point or so.

For II? No, I only played it on the PSP. I had no idea it was even available on the NES. I did play the original game on the NES for like 10 minutes in more recent time and was like, "NOPE!"

It was Japan-exclusive until the Final Fantasy Origins collection on the original Playstation.

That's why the original US localization order was so weird. IV became II, VI became III. And then Square went "screw it", and made VII the same worldwide, confusing anyone in the West who thought they were following the franchise.

V similarly finally became available in the US Final Fantasy Anthologies release for the Playstation.

The US didnt get a version of III until the 3DS remake.

I think the main shitty thing about the FF MMOs is making them numbered entries in the series.

Isn't it also the one where you could gain experience by hitting yourself?

    Amen.
Dragon Quest did the same thing. MMOs should not be part of the numbered series.

Not exactly "experience", but "proficiency". FFII didn't have traditional levels. It had organic stat growth based on repeatedly performing actions tied to said stats. Getting hit would "toughen" your character up, boosting your HP. Attacking would increase your STR, etc, etc.

Made sense in concept, but really grindy and clunky in actual practice. And under the game's original balancing, yes, it became much more efficient to attack yourself to power-up your characters. I believe that was rebalanced in later remakes (along with the removal of stat degradation).

It’s a system that can work if done right. FFII is Square’s first attempt and you can tell. Similarly FFIII’s job system is clearly the prototype. It’s clunky, grindy, and not too great.

FFII customization is built on in the Saga series. I actually like a lot of what they do with it in what would become Final Fantasy Adventure. FFIII’s job system is drastically improved in FFV and Tactics.
