Once upon a time Hollywood 4/10

I know that score is pretty terrible and I think I should precede what I’m about to say by stating I’m a lifelong Tarantino fan and admirer so when I finally got around to giving this a go I was pretty surprised to see how disappointing this movie was.

The biggest fail for me was the script and storytelling failing to get me to invest in and care about the central friendship that the film was built around. The film had ample time to flesh out these characters as it seemed to last forever and give them the opportunity to shine but they felt like shallow sketches of characters.

Tarantino scripts are nearly always memorable and full of unexpected wit and personality so it was unusual that this one felt a bit bland in comparison. The wolf of Wall Street showed that Leonardo decaprio can do off the chain hedonism with skill and brilliance so it seemed odd to leave his drinking and hell-raising mostly alluded to rather than shown as a bit of humour would have probably made the sadness work a lot better.

Bruce Lees portrayal felt a little unusual considering how previously Tarantino had expressed nothing but love and appreciation for the people who create martial arts movies.

It’s also felt like the ending was a thinly veiled excuse for Tarantino to inflict his schlocky sadism upon a nemesis of his choice and in previous films he has taken it out upon Nazis and slave masters and it seemed like this time it was the Mansion family’s turn to be on the receiving end of the brutality. This pattern is getting a little repetitive and predictable in my view and could really benefit from some ambiguity rather than Brad Pits Macho caricature of a character inflicting ultraviolence on a villain.

It wasn’t all bad as the scenes expressing sadness at hitting middle age and the fear of diminishing returns brought some much needed emotion along with it as well as the alternative outcome to the Manson family attack hi-lighting the tragedy behind the real life events. The soundtrack and aesthetic of the era was brilliant but for me this couldn’t save this film from being a disappointment.

Space Jam: A New Legacy 5/10
It's good when it wants to be, but the movie spends so much of its runtime reminding the audience that it's a Warner property, that you almost want to back out of Space Jam 2 (I was watching it on HBO Max) and watch literally any of the other Warner properties that show up. The "Goon Squad" can't hold a candle to the OG Monstars (who have two cameos using 25-year-old archival animation.. cheap bastards), and I felt like far too much of this film took notes from 2018's "Ready Player One".

    There Will Be Blood 9/10
This film, upon my first viewing, was very confusing. I thought I liked it, but I couldn't figure out why I liked it. So, I finally rewatched it, and things connected in my head way more. This film deserves all of its awards and appreciations, and whatnot. The acting, the editing, the cinematography (my god the cinematography/visuals in general are fantastic), and the writing are all excellent. And it's terrifying.

    Raging Bull 8/10
This film was also really good, it's aesthetics were quite striking (I love the 40's), and so was the story. A classic tale of toxic masculinity and obsessing over whatever the hell makes you feel like a man. The ending was a little odd to me, specifically the bible quote. Apparently LaMotta was redeemed by the ending, but it didn't really feel like it to me. The quote felt out of place and threw me off a little bit, but all in all this really is a must see film.

    The Nightmare Before Christmas

Perhaps I should have waited till either Halloween or Christmas; but it's a timeless film still to this day whether it's through the stop-motion animation and each of the musical songs performed. I think what works is the level of creativity taken to pull off a movie like this and Tim Burton's influence certainly elevates it here. I could say this a 10/10 movie for me but I do nitpick I could use a little bit more Oogie Boogie in the film and maybe he wasn't there much because the runtime is just 76 minutes. If I just want a nice film that has songs and animation to marvel; then movie tops the agenda as always.

I try to wait until Sept at least to watch it, the longest I hold out is this month to August. Jack going to Christmas town is my favorite scene.

The last movie I saw for myself was Justice League Snyder cut. 9 out of 10. Never knew much about it's history but I hated that previous justice league movie theatrical cut. Snyder cut was a quick 4 hours, great stuff. Loved the fleshed out characters of Flash & Cyborg.
Kids wise last movie was Luca. I never know what a Pixar movie will be. Interesting concept. 9/10

Enjoyable slasher based on body switch. Amusing comedy, good gore. Vaughn was funny as a teen girl.

Just finished watching The Empty Man. Very unique film. It's a shame that it was released (not sure in what capacity it was even released) under this duress in the film industry. If it would've been properly promoted and such I'm sure a lot if people would've appreciated this film or at least reached cult film status to some extent.

    Solid 8.5/10

    Censor:
Started out as an interesting subject only to switch something more vague and confusing far removed from how it started. Story is about Enid, a film censor whose job is to watch horror films and slash the excessive parts out to receive the proper ratings, only for these films to awaken her obsession in uncovering the mystery of her sister's disappearance.

The film had an interesting subject as I said, and that is film censorship. But instead of painting the censors as evil erasing art, this was about the censors being careless and passed a very violent sequence in a film blamed for increase of crimes and violence. And if that wasn't enough, the knowledge of Enid being responsible for that made her a public target of endless harassment and was treated as a bigger criminal than the real criminals just because she didn't censor enough in films thought to inspire crimes. This was in my opinion the strongest part of the film and would've made it an interesting commentary on video nasties and a different look at censorship than the tired evil censorship and the scariest for how real it was, but what comes afterwards is where it lost its steam.

Following an unfulfilled commentary, the film switches to a mystery solving of Enid trying to connect the dots solving the disappearance of her sister who she believes still alive somewhere, and a series of horror films she was watching gave her clues of that.

Not gonna say a lot about it, but honestly this was a big step down. The mystery did not interest me, and depending on how you'd look at it, it was very vague in execution and took us away from the more interesting subject that was completely set aside.

    7/10

    Breaking Barbi

A ditsy, blonde social media queen goes on a Tinder date in the woods and ends up getting lost. Oblivious to everything except her phone, Barbi tries to find her way back to her car while missing out on an alien craft that attacks a government plane sending it crashing in the woods nearby. Without a clue, Barbi ends up being caught in the middle of an alien invasion as government agents attempt to survive while keeping Barbi from stumbling into her own demise. A slap-stick comedy that slaps the face of the modern trend of internet babes all on a $50 budget featuring horrible cgi, weak performances and props from Dollar Tree/General.

    My rating? A solid 10/10.

    Toy Story - 9/10

Still among Pixar's top best two or three. Wall-E will always be my favorite, but Toy Story might be second. Just a simple fun adventure with extremely likable characters. About the only complaint I have is that the animation looks a bit dated nowadays (I honestly wouldn't mind them remastering some of these earlier movies, as long as the original stayed available), but it's still pretty impressive for animation that was done in the '90s. Overall a fantastic film.

Jimmy Neutron" Boy Genius - 7.5/10

I remember seeing this when I was really young, but didn't watch it regularly growing up. I think I last watched it back in 2014 or so. The animation is pretty dated, but I actually think it has enough good stuff to be entertaining to modern audiences. There are a lot of good jokes, and it's a fun watch overall. It kind of encapsulates that early 2000s vibe in the dialog and music and whatnot.

    Toy Story 2 - 8/10

I quite enjoy this movie, but I feel like it's easily the weakest of the first trilogy (that's just me, apparently this is a lot of peoples' favorite). I feel like there's a bit too much going on with three antagonists (I honestly think Zurg could have been saved for a future installment), and I found the pacing towards the end a bit off (we really didn't need the finale with the plane escape, I feel like the conveyer scene could have been extended a bit longer and just been the whole finale). But overall it's a really good movie, and it has tons of great scenes and jokes.

    Jungle Cruise 4/10

Essentially a re-skin of Pirates of the Caribbean but with less substance. Replace Capt Jack with Skipper Frank. Replace Elizabeth Swan with Lily Houghton. Replace Capt Barbossa with Conquistador Aguirre. Replace Aztec gold with the Tears of the Moon. The pacing is poor and the plot is predictable and the editing is choppy. Also the animals from the live action Jungle Book were more convincing.

This was a really good one! Re-Animator seems to get the most attention however I feel From Beyond was a much better movie. Lots a great creatures and effects with more interesting story elements.

Rurouni Kenshin: the Beginning (live action adaptation) just came out on netflix.

    8.5

It should have been released and viewed BEFORE the previous film, called The Final.

    The Tomorrow War - 4.5-5.0/10:

I know time travel is a murky thing, sometimes you have to just go along for the ride and find the happy ending, but they just did not stick the landing here. Some good ideas (at first glance, not so when you look beneath the surface) and a pretty good start, but terrible execution in the end and the film just goes on far too long for what it is. It's not the fault of the cast, the director, the special effects, it's the story and writer. The ending is devoid of all logic and just... *sigh* I didn't like this one, I really didn't. Felt utterly pointless in a lot of ways. I got the messages they were shootin' (climate change, war is bad mmmkay?, soldiers are nothing but fodder, etc) and I agree with them but man it was heavy-handed. Bleh.

    Jackie Brown - 9.5/10:

I had never seen this before and I was absolutely blown away. From the soundtrack (dang, Tarantino... you can pick 'em) to the cast to the twists and turns... Stellar performances and I can see why it revitalized careers for some of the stars in the 90s when it was released. Wow. I did feel as though DeNiro was wasted, past a certain point, though. Aside from a couple of funny scenes and just having that name attached, he was ultimately just scene filler and not much else. The entire film could've been made without his presence and not much would've been missed. That's not a dig at him, it's a dig at the film not giving him his due when he's an award-winning actor and he just more or less is there so Tarantino could say he worked with him. He easily could've been yet another of the film's strengths. It's a classic, it's fantastic, it's absolutely worth your time if you haven't seen it. Dang.

Tarantino usually gets the best use out of his actors and actresses - I mean shit Harvey Keitel is in Pulp Fiction for what, fifteen minutes, and he’s so goddamn captivating it feels like he’s been there all the time. DeNiro may not have needed a bigger role than what he had but I certainly agree it could have been more impactful or memorable.

I mean, they didn't really add anything to the lore in my opinion. Basically just a way to showcase unique animals. Felt bad for the No-Maj dude.

    Bohemian Rhapsody: Shrug emoji/10

Not sure I'd call that an Oscar-worthy performance from Malek. The problem with the narrative of the band Queen is that in this day and age, it's a rather vanilla story.

The ending makes a lot of actions people take make no sense and explains it all with an info dump after the ending. I'm no Hollywood writer but I'm pretty sure that's not how twist endings are meant to work or be built up to
