Is Spotter painted?

 

More like Quakewave, if I'm remembering right. I don't have mine out for display and haven't for some time, but I think that was during the time when FT was applying paint more sparingly than they do now.

 

After seeing the nightmare people are going through for the sh figuarts Dragonball preorders right now I am less worked up about fanstoys preorder hardships lol

 

It’s crappy until you experience some other fandoms like Macross and try to pick up one of those Bandai Dx Valkyries. I’m glad that FansToys are releasing enough figures that it’ll discourage scalpers.

Now hoarders like me…that’s another story.

 

Spotter is sparingly painted. Light purple, silver, and red on legs. Red stripe around arms. Green and silver on chest, and the entire face. That’s it.

 

Reissues? In this economy?

 

I'm surprised they didn't make the green chest pieces translucent. Looks like they have the typewriter hands too. Interesting to see how fanstoys has progressed in their designs since these were released.

I'm no expert - I only started collecting FansToys in 2019 - but it seems to me like their earlier figures are a little closer to Hasui-era MPs in terms of deco and general design sensibilities than to modern toon-obsessed MPs. Less paint, blockier sculpts, more gribbly details on surfaces. Does that seem accurate?

 

You're dead on. This is discussed occasionally. Just look at the differences between Spindrift 1.0 and 2.0 for confirmation.

 

Absolutely. They wanna have their stuff mesh well with Takara? They gotta follow the moves of Takara, at least to an extent.

 

I thought Spindrift 1.0 was pre-COVID when he use to go to the office and the gym regularly and Spindrift 2.0 was after he had to work from home for a year and a half and camped out in front of the TV.

 

To any new collectors, i would personally go the way of ONLY fully painted new figures, other than FT Dino X and FT Pheonix X, which at least wont yellow over time, and the chrome on the FT dino was excellent.

My recommendation would be as follows:

FT Stunticons (All of them, but otherwise, at least Roadking is my #1)
FT Quietus T and FT Sovereign M
FT Minibots (All of them except Spindrift 1.0)
FT Thomas (All 3 modes are excellent... now that doesnt happen very often)
FT Aerialbots (if you like them, i personally only loved Maverick, but not the limbs in bot mode, otherwise Goose is good in jet mode too, and Maverick)

As for non all painted, i like FT Grenadier Purple version (all 3 bugs are ok not all painted, but this was by far my favorite), and FT Willis (if one is ok with the silver instead of white, i wasnt...), and FT Rouge (if you will never transform her, she is perfect with MP Arcee).

 

Oh boy, these did not age well.  

 

Most of those older MPs did not age well. That really surprised me because I never thought that MP-10 or MP-13 would look antiquated but the engineering is on a whole different level now.

Makes you wonder what’ll figures look like in 10 years. Mass-shifting, pocket dimensions, personalized scale,…
