I agree that the coke-fuelled* sociopathic shelf-clearing for shiny, NEW characters that you kids will love just like the old guys was the main issue with moving media Rodders. It totally demonstrated that the suits did not understand the full mechanics of the Transformers success. There's no prior connection or affection for Hot Rod to counterbalance "That brash M*********** just got my Space Dad KILLED!?!", on comes the hatred.
There's an alternate universe out there where someone realised that, and Hot Rod got lightly retooled as an adolescent Bumblebee struggling with redefining himself as he moves into TF adulthood from his G1 'Toon "kid brother" phase. Sure, there'd still be some annoyed that "Bombus Prime got OP killed" BUT the affection for character is there for him to get away with such a big mistake (barring the hardcore 'Bee Haters).
(Of course that means it's Hound on Moonbase 2 with Spike instead, hints of a break in the friendship, more emotional punch with a smidge of reconciliation when the lads are rescued at the end.)
Now, of course, that course seems to have perhaps been a smidge over-corrected!
I think part of the comics issue is they had to introduce the TFTM core heroes but also had to keep 'em in Early Film status stasis to not too explicitly contradict the movie, so our Trio are a pre-Simpsons Leonard Nimoy cameo, all exposition, with a smidge of Deus Ex to wrap everything up.

Have you ever ordered a figure based on a nagging feeling you should? Like even I can't think of a proper reason for a duplicate Beastman figure but something told me to order it just in case.

I get the same feeling in DIY aisles, 'hmmm, something's telling me I might need that'. And I usually buy it because there's that 'Aha!' feeling 6 months later :lol

My conundrum I think is that I was never beholden to one particular media of Transformers - loved the cartoon (via VHS) and the comic, but always felt less animosity towards comic Rodimus as his more aggressive traits felt like they had more layers than his ‘reluctant leader’ schtick in the toon.

If anything, in Return of Optimus Prime, I think red plague Rodimus was closer to his comic version/ a more interesting version.

I love Hot Rod / Rodimus. TFTM 86 is my G1, and as I wasn't really exposed to season 3 and the comics as a kid, there was no doubt in my mind that Rodimus would go on to be a natural leader and worthy successor.

Early on in my days of becoming part of the modern internet fandom, much like Jar Jar it was cool to rag on Rodimus as the worst thing ever and I got swept up in that (yup, I don't mind Jar Jar now), but I will now happily Stan for Hot Rod and Rodimus. He's a great character and an iconic design.

Kingdom Red Alert for me, although I'm still fighting the urge to order him for 26 quid delivered, bit steep.

    Ahh, the G1 Rodimus Debate.

I think its much simpler than many of the nuances.

By late 86 through to early 87 Transformers was peaking then already on their way out in popularity. Thus like many post 86 characters he simply never established physically or emotionally. For most he was just a figure in a toy box on the shelves. He never appeared in the terrestrial cartoon either where it stopped its run and didn't air the later seasons iirc.

Not many saw the movie. Even by then kids at school weren't as intetested in transformers. I never knew anyone into the comics, I wasn't. Not just that but kids didn't have the same quantum of toys on average in the 80s.

Toy fashions swung super quickly in the 80s. For those that rememeber I posted the argos catalogue scans recently showing how quickly trends moved at that time.

I loved Rodimus, the movie had a profound impact on me. However beyond the movie and the Rodimus/Galvatron toys there was nothing to support and create the lore like Optimus and Megatron had established.

It’s dropped below 25C in here for the first time in like a week, absolute heaven.

Also I like Hot Rod personally but he was always going to be met with backlash. A character nobody had ever seen before is suddenly made leader, AND you killed Optimus Prime? Yeah people are gonna be upset lol

    My cosmic cube turned up!

I reckon it's just Ultron to go then that's the 'main' villains done.

Emirate xaaron would be great, even from Red or super7 (wily 'ol buzzard was too lazy to transform).

If only my list was as short as gears and skids. Mine ranges from thundering, to Jackpot and to bus formers we never got, nor never will.

Was it yourself I mentioned this to, apologies, Collectors Den and Allthegoodstuff apparently have POs but I don't know what the prices are.
    ...

Everything was fine because of good internal packaging, that's why it's necessary!

Been looking forward to that MOTU pack!

Just got back from reading the Syfy article on the IDW2 Wreckers. It's certainly a new take on the team; doesn't move me, but since they've gone back to the very start of the war, it wouldn't make much sense to have the traditional rock-hard commandos. I guess this way they could evolve into something like that.

So that's Thunderclash, Hot Shot, Aileron, Circuit, Minerva, and Ricochet/Stepper... well I'd sure be interested in new toys of some of those. :)

The box is a bit squashed on one corner but that's the only issue, the figure is like new.
I don't have the extra bits for it though.

Galvatron looks so glam and honestly, I can see him doing this in Series 3 of the G1 cartoon.

I’m surprised Ricochet/Stepper hasn’t already had a Gen Selects tease from 86 Jazz. If Artfire can come with a targetmaster I don’t think it’s too far out there to expect a deluxe price mark up to include his partner. Nice to see Circuit get a bit more spotlight again, almost forgot about him.

I’m so glad Hot Shot is a Wrecker now too the GS figure is absolutely lovely, especially with the Matrix Workshop upgrade kit.
