?

Do you think this new product could be stepping away from what we love about Transformers as toys?

Be cool if a 3rd party made a figure out of the Optimus on the box cover, if they haven't already.

I already have Lewin. And then I'll have this that can move itself. You can keep trying to convince yourself that this isn't awesome. But it's not going to make those of us who are excited become bitter Debbie downers like you.

Always laughed the fact that they're using a 3P Transformers for that comparison.

The TFWiki screenshot is accurate, but to get into a bit more detail: Hasbro has to avoid saying that what Transformers do is "transform," because that could quickly lose them their trademark on the term due to it being a generic descriptor of what the product does.

For example, you can't trademark the term "lamp" in relation to light fixtures - it's just a descriptor of the product. So Hasbro basically has to push the idea that "Transformers" is just a title, unrelated to what the toys do, which is "convert."

    >I wonder who this is even for, especially at that price. What a waste of materials.

Me. IIt\'s for me. It\'s no more a waste of materials than your personal viewpoint is a waste of bandwidth.

I'm pretty bent right now that after ordering direct from Robosen, he's gonna be back on Pulse for $100 less...

$100 less than what? I just checked my preorder and it's the same $699 USD listing.

And mine even states "Collector's Edition"

Let's be VERY clear on this. The people who are buying this, myself included, are not buying it because it is the most g1 looking Optimus Prime on the market. At the end of the day EVERY toy ends up looking old or dated as new versions come out. Even your Lewin Atlas (which is awesome) will one day not gleam quite as brightly as it once did in your eye. The idea of the automation and the amount of engineering, programming, and effort that went into this toy is truly impressive to me. I have no doubt that I will love it when it arrives, I will marvel and the voice commands, complete the missions, explore everything I can do with it. Eventually I will not play with it as much and it will become a display piece. It will be something for me to show off to friends who might have an interest every so often. This is just the way of things.

I'm not buying this to "display" it. I'm buying it because it's a walking talking self transforming programmable robot. Not being able to stand up when turned off is the least of my cares. He will be stored in the box when not in use. Anybody who thinks this is a display piece missed the point by a mile.

That said, I'm sure someone will come up with a set of braces to keep him standing when powered down if the market wants it. If people are willing to pay for it, I might make a set.

I have to admit that the novelty of this toy is already kind of wearing off on me, and I've only watched some videos of it. But I think I will keep my preorder, because I love the idea of a Transformer that can self transform. I'm going in fully aware that it will most likely be a novelty item for me that I'll mess with for a few days and then put somewhere for a long time, kind of like those remote control Star Wars droids I bought a while ago. I don't see any issue with that though. Those of us who wants one know what we're getting into.

The novelty can wear off but it can be a display piece forever. Maybe you don't want to display yours but I want mine proudly on a shelf. What I really want to know is why he can't stand up. Do his ankles go slack? Is being unbalanced his natural state and the robotics keep him upright intelligently somehow? Maybe he can stand up but the reviewer only tried it in an awkward pose? I'd like more info. And yes hopefully some braces are in the cards but its by no means guaranteed and doesn't dismiss the disappointment others and I feel about it.

It can't stand up powered off because it has servos for joints. Servos don't hold position without power. Powered down, he basically becomes a rag doll.

This is not a surprise to anyone with experience with things loaded with servos. I knew from the beginning it would be this way.

So his ankles would just go slack in that case along with everything else. That's a bummer. Guess I should have known more about servos. Keeping my preorder for now but that's a tougher sell for me.

Thank you for the helpful aside. I'm glad to know your brain is so big because you play with servos and I'm an idiot because I'm just an app developer.

Wouldn't you find it a little ridiculous if people complained and were surprised that an app didn't run when the phone was powered off?
