I read the comic. Not going to judge it too harshly since it's just the first in a 4/6 issue mini series, but it didn't blow me away like it seems to have others.

It's a good start for a story that's trying to go for a more lighthearted 80s cartoon feeling but wanting to amp up the stakes.
The art is serviceable, far from amazing as someone described it here. It may seem amazing when compared to the current idw comic, but it really isn't.
    Interested in seeing more though.

Not quite as extreme as D'vann, but that was the rejected plan in 2002

Her hangs literally in front of her eyes to one side. Like @optimusmegas said, it's also more associated with modern or punk stories, although maybe this version is more steampunk?

With something like He-Man, practicality never really is a thing. I mean just look at the titular character.

Still, it’s a haircut I’ve always enjoyed, and I’m pretty sure that was before it was popularized.

    The Mullet

Long and luscious, powerful yet whimsical

When you’re always on the go, want to wear the long hair but not have it blind you in a sword fight....

I know. It's just a pet peeve of mine, ranking up there with martial artists who are also alchemists.

So I've never made it all the way through rewatching the entire original cartoon on DVD. But in anticipation of this series, I decided to throw in one of the DVDs. I figure I'll try to at least make a little progress. Man, that series is a tough watch. I've rewatched the original Transformers, G.I. Joe, Thundercats, Silverhawks, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on DVD. But making progress on the original He-Man DVDs has always been a struggle for me.

That's why I just got the Best of DVD set. The 2002 series is easier to binge.

For me, the fact that the Filmation cartoon is episodic with no multi part story arcs of significance to the overall series is what makes it tough to simply sit down and watch a bunch of episodes. I have been casually rewatching the show over the past few months on Youtube. I'll watch an episode here or there but there's no ongoing story to make it something that I feel compelled to watch several episodes back to back.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it for what it is but I prefer the mini comics, simply because the pulp fantasy feel of it is more my cup of tea.

Unfortunately Filmation ages like fine milk. The work was amazing at the time, I still love the animation and look. But unfortunately moms back in the 80’s had to cut the balls off everything. Filmation still might look beautiful but it’s an unfulfilling slog of a watch. Unless you’re medicating yourself in which you know have fun it’s a blast.

I love the art direction of the Filmation cartoon. The alien landscapes were really appealing to me as a kid (they still are) because they reminded me of the psychedelic backgrounds in the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon. I grew up on reading old comics and pulp magazines that a local barber provided when I would accompany my father for his haircuts. This cultivated my appreciation and preference for more reality rooted aesthetics (I'll take Alex Ross over Jim Lee any day). Because of this, the character models used in the Filmation cartoon was, and still are, aesthetically pleasing to me, since they're heavily referenced from live models.

I think that the wholesomeness of the Filmation cartoon was a bit cloying for anyone older than 10 even back in the early '80s. Society in the West has become even more cynical over the past 40 years so I can see how many view the show as silly and archaic by today's standards. You definitely have to be in the right mood and/or mindset to enjoy it.

As much as I appreciate the idea to "grow up" MotU with the Revelation miniseries, I hope that the presence of hope and optimism remains. I know that many are turned off by Teela's depiction in the trailer as a cynical and stand offish person but I think and I hope that it was done more to be a part of her character arc in Revelation. It seems like both Adam and Andra will serve as people who the more optimistic foils to Teela, the cynic, who comes full circle by the conclusion and embraces the beliefs and values she seems to abandon in the first half of the show.

Even as tame as it was the predominant religious groups of the time went after MOTU pretty hard. I'm sure they tried to get away with as much as they could.

We all just laugh at it now but that was a huge hurtle then. Even up to the Harry Potter fad America was still going through that.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was the last show of one era and the first show of the next era. It hasn’t aged as well as the shows that came later but we owe it a debt of gratitude.

I’ll raise a glass to Lou Scheimer any day :buttrock

America was in the grips of one it’s more puritanical periods. I was going to make a Tipper Gore comment but I’ll leave it alone.
Precisely why Star Wars remains brilliant. All ages optimistic fun. Not easy to do that and make it great.

Lol—- well, we were agreeing on almost everything up until the other day. As far as I’m concerned there was some miscommunication and we got message board angry, I’d prefer to leave it in Preternia.

I'd like to see more optimistic scifi/fantasy stuff. He-Man is one of those optimistic takes, I hope it stays that way in Kevin Smith's version. I don't know if I want another pessimistic take on nostalgia stuff, I've already had enough of that.

    Absolutely.

..... but about that technovirus in Preternia I think we really need to get into how it got there!

I am going to go out on a limb and say it definitely won’t be pessimistic. I don’t know exactly why but I am going to say He-Man’s rainbow transformation in the Trailer is a visual representation of optimism. And I know there are all kinds of other connotations now with that but I think it’s a nod to the optimistic world-view.
