Yeah, I thought about that, but honestly I think they could create something similar but different enough to sidestep the copyright. Hasbro made a Generations Roadbuster a few years back that was very obviously G1 Roadbuster, and I don't recall there being any legal issues around it.

 

I REALLY want TakaraTomy to get away from the A-list characters again and start going into the catalog of G1 more, again.

Also, Combiners. At this point, it's just embarrassing for them not to have even made an attempt with them.

 

But then what makes it a Masterpiece?

I guess that depends on how you define a Masterpiece. In my opinion, it is an execution of the original character that draws upon the strengths of its various depictions. It should not be a reproduction of the original toy or the original animation model with modern production engineering and lots of joints. I realize the MP line has more recently gone all-in on the animation aesthetic, but I don't feel that was the original intention. Besides, the character doesn't even have a cartoon image to live up to. And as I stated in full disclosure, I'm one of the MP heretics that favors the designs of Shogo Hasui over the "Sunbow models rendered in 3D plastic". That argument has been ridden hard in other threads, though, and it's not worth re-hashing it here. This was my wish list, so it naturally reflects my preferred aesthetic.

I think if Hasbro can issue a recognizable Generations figure that successfully homages the TF-labeled Bandai toy, then TT could easily create one for the MP line. They could even use a legitimate real-life light armored military vehicle design for his alt mode.

 

That's fair. In my defense, the plastic issue is usually the one that comes up as the deal breaker with that release.  


Fwiw, I always liked the Gundog design, and wish I had gotten that instead of the Fanstoys.

 

I don't think they will ever let too much time go by without a new Optimus, Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, and Bumblebee, even if it's just a straight up copy of the previous one. It's easy money.

So yeah, after Nightbird, this doesn't seem so far outside the realm of possibility anymore, so now I'm officially wishlisting a Masterpiece Bumper. From the same engineering as Bumblebee and Cliffjumper.
