They're not being scalped but they're also not worth anywhere near what those listings are up for. First Edition Cliffjumper routinely sells for like $60, less if you're willing to hunt for a bargain.

If you want a sealed one, particularly one in US packaging or a Takara edition, you're going to pay over three figures.

I’ve seen enough things in collector groups on social media platforms to know that a lot of people do indeed pay scalper prices.

It’s cringe whenever people make posts bragging about their hauls which they paid 2-5x the price for (especially when the item is about to be release/ still available on shelves or easy to find for a decent price with a bit of patience) and people in the groups pat them on the back. NOOOOO

Also cringe when a legit scalpers come in and show off what they’re sell and people throw money at them.

Maybe some people are just unwise with their money/ lack self-control

    Ebay:
Those Siege toys that haven't been available on store shelves for at least 2 years also aren't being "scalped", either.

I'll be honest I did impulse buy a Netflix Soundwave at a pretty high markup. I had lost numerous eBay auctions for him and I was getting sick of it so I caved. It was probably like $20 over market value, so I mean not INSANE but I still feel kinda dumb that I did it.

    Ebay:
$20 extra dollars to a reseller on eBay or an extra $20 spent on time and gas driving to a bunch of different Walmarts to find one at retail. Either way you got what you wanted, so you really shouldn't feel dumb about that.

There’s a subtle difference between “scalper price” and “market price.”

If it’s currently available and hard to find, but someone is selling it for well above retail, that’s scalping.

If it’s 2+ years old, and someone is selling it for well above retail, that’s market price.

If anyone had that much money, it probably be better just to buy HasTak and have them make all the Earthrise Thrusts you want.

I actually bought mine for _less_ than retail from somebody on eBay that was drop shipping from Amazon. But, then, this was when it was new, not years later when supply had dried up. There are remarkably few toys that are _really_ scalped. Most reported instances of scalping are people that never seem to learn that supply and, more importantly, the time for dragging one's ass are finite and misdirect their rage at having missed those windows at a boogeyman.

I wish I knew where people that pay crazy prices were shopping. Every sale when I was selling was an uphill fight. Hasbro would set a price of $15 for a deluxe and armies of clowns would spill out of the woodwork shrieking that one cent over $5 (shipping included) was highway robbery.

Are you no longer a retailer? You have some serious PTSD. Really sucks that you didn’t have a better experience.

(quick note: all prices I mention are in CAD)

I missed a TR figure (Twin Twist) in store at 15$ because I hesitated, and it took me a year to find one that was reasonable (around 30$) but the shipping of 20$ by itself really made the price surge, but I bit as I wanted the two brothers (I had not missed Topspin).

Toys are worth what you're willing to pay, and I hated it but I accepted it.

In regard to the thread, my two cents

Considering that the year that followed was Siege where ALL deluxes were now 30$ as standard, I felt that Hasbro was the biggest scalper out there and that was the price to pay to get the figures that were coming out. The better quality did help swallow that a bit better, but a 100% increase overnight was still a very bitter pill.

And all of this is thanks to Hasbro and the retailers trying to maximize profits... the increases in prices, the scarcity of so many figures, the "exclusives", we no longer have the ability to pick and choose when we get a toy. We have now reached the point that if you see it, jump on it as it will be gone next time you look for it, due to low numbers or the "scalpers" that have realized the money to be made. Sales and overstock are extremely rare for most people outside of hubs that gets lots of stock (with money that are barely able to get any stock), and usually only for figures that were much more produced.

I remember when older figures were sold about the same as the original pricing and such in the following year or two... now it's "lucky" to even get a recent figure, and "lucky" that an older one is no more than double the prices.

I hate when I see a figure that I missed that I'll probably never get aside luck to get it at a reasonable price, but I love it when I do find one that is as such.

That said, these scalpers that are setting the most insane prices have one thing that most casual people selling a few extras or their collections (or part of) don't have, and that's the patience to mark things at the crazy prices and wait until someone cracks and pays it.

The true scumbags are the people that scalp Pre-orders. Of course, this isn't on the level of those $500 Gigawatts.
