So, I was optimistic about Singular Point at first, but as the series went on it just kept on entrenching itself in its theoretical physics technobabble, to the point where by the end it all just seemed more like a science and mathematics essay that just happens to be Godzilla themed. There wasn't any interest in making an easily digestible story or relatable characters here.

Unfortunately another dud for anime Godzilla.

Having GvK on DVD really has proven a treat in rewatching scenes and finding the teeny tiny little details I hadn't before.

In example, during their first battle, once Godzilla has destroyed the aircraft carrier and is dragging Kong into another underwater brawl, there's a moment during their struggle where Kong actually bites Godzilla. Bit hard to make out past the shadow but just before the sinking carrier passes by, you see Kong force Godzilla's head aside and go for the neck, with an audible cracking sound as he tries to bite through the hard scales, before the Big G claws him off.

Onwards and upwards for more :)

You gotta open it in a new tab. It doesn't work otherwise.

We at least have a decent re-release of the original version.

The Return of Godzilla (Godzilla 1984) | Sentai Filmworks

Sure it doesn't have the Dr.Pepper machine or Raymond Burr but it is a serviceable copy of the film.

I feel like they’re already going to make it. How often do companies do polls like this and then say “Sorry. The fans didn’t come out in enough numbers. Maybe next time.”
Maybe I’m celebrating early, but I’m feeling good about this one.

Director's commentary provides some insights onto the outcome of the titular battle, some pieces of which we've likely mused on and discussed. Interesting to recap.

-Godzilla initially doesn't treat the feud with Kong as anything serious. Smacking down an upstart promptly and happy to walk away provided Kong lays down and doesn't get back up. But when Kong comes back loaded with an atomic ax, suddenly Godzilla has to take the fight more seriously, and eventually gives way to frustration at Kong's persistence, resulting in his vicious beatdown at the end.

-Kong's victory is not that of the title winner but the one who is beat down and gets back up anyway. Godzilla may beat Kong but he can never defeat him, so long as Kong refuses to bow. Godzilla is screaming in his face to submit and Kong essentially spits in his face. After all is said and done, this is part of what forges mutual respect between them; Godzilla, in all his phenomenal power, cannot help but be impressed by a monkey who would rather die than yield.

-The ax was not an initial part of the storyline, but was developed over time as part of the need to give Kong an edge against his more powerful opponent. It does fall down to the same logic as Batman crafting Kryptonite spears and bombs to use on Superman, though with a more personal edge in that Kong's weapon is made from dead 'Zillas and so contributes to the Big G's growing anger.

    Such fun :D

Honestly yeah, I'd like a bit more love for Zilla. May not have lived up to the god aspect but I was very charmed when I watched the film all those years ago, sympathetic to a creature who meant no real harm but simply couldn't co-exist with a smaller world.

After Binge-watching through Godzilla: Singular Point, I gotta say I enjoyed it.

Yes, a not-insignificant chunk of the plot is lost in nearly-incomprehensible theoretical metaphysics, but at least Studio Bones TRIES to make it make some sense. (Easier to follow than the third act of "Planet Eater" anyway)

The decision to scale down Kaiju like Anguirus and Radon (I will only call it "Rodan" in western-originated Godzilla media) was probably a difficult one, but it helped in developing the new Jet Jaguar, so I appreciate it.

Speaking of Jet Jaguar, I love his new design. Abandoning his suit-based design of his appearances in "Godzilla vs Megalon" and "Godzilla Island" in favor of a bulkier, more mechanically-functional aesthetic that retains the markings of the Showa-Era robot. He lacks his mass-shifting capabilities of old, but it's great to see someone loves Jet Jaguar enough to nearly give him a starring role in a Godzilla project.

The King of the Monsters is mostly absent from the series, and takes a number of design cues from 2016's forgettable "Shin Godzilla" but I'm not gonna complain. Goji's used sufficiently-enough in "Singular Point" that I don't feel cheated out of action like I did watching the 2014 Godzilla film.

Singular Point was great. I definitely think it's better binged, as I can imagine the emphasis on theoretical science can make the individual week-to-week episode breaks painful, but having watched the whole thing in a day I really liked it.

Never thought I'd be cheering for Jet Jaguar. I definitely hope there's a second season.

It's possible that the weekly drip as well as going sub only for such a wordy and scientifically dense series may have hampered my enjoyment of the series quite a bit. I may give SP another shot with the dub this time.

It's easier to follow with the dub especially the messaging parts where the sub titles went by faster then I could read them.

I found the dub quite good, and yeah I could imagine a lot of the scientific talk hampered by fast-moving subtitles. This show definitely does not dumb anything down, it soldiers on with its theories and science with hardly a layman explanation to soften the blow.

Yeah, those would've been a nightmare to follow with the characters messaging inhumanely fast and using emojis that themselves need translations.

I do wish Jet Jaguar had gotten to do more after he got big, but that he was even here at all and essentially the hero of the story was great.
