Maybe its just a continuation/sequel trilogy of WFC? I mean they're redoing the Stunticons right? Maybe they're bringing back the Combiners and whoever from 84-87 they haven't done.

That's really odd news about Straxus. Does it possibly have something to do with it being a Marvel design? I wouldn't think so, since they were able to that Darkmount toy... It's just a really puzzling decision. Sucks for the people who've been wanting him.

In my opinion, that IDW design is kind of generic, but I'm wondering if we'll get Jiaxus from it.

LOL, I love seeing GeWunners freaking out every time there's any deviation from the 80s. I don't even read the new IDW comics, but Marvel Straxus' design wasn't very interesting. I do hope that there's a version with the Marvel head and colour scheme, since that might be the only distinct face to come out of G1 and those colours better differentiate him from Black/Sky Shadow. I'd honestly be shocked if it didn't happen. For the alternate mode, I do like my TF turning into something mobile, so I'm glad to hear he'll have a jet form, although I do kinda hope there's also a cannon mode, since I do admittedly think the early G1 philosophy of all the 'Con leaders being guns is a neat idea.

I feel like the whole design of the current Straxus is lazy. He just looks really generic in the current IDW comics. I'm not some 80s era purist either despite growing up in that era and I love a good updated design (I mean... look at my name and avatar!) but a bad design is just a bad design. I suppose it could look better in toy form, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm glad this info came out though because now my expectations for Straxus have been moderated.

I am NOT a “Geewunner”. I’ve been pining for AEC and BM Vehicon updates for years. I would just prefer they respect the source material as much as they have been with other figures. Could I live with a new alt mode? Sure. Megatron is a tank now. It’s fine. But not that IDW design for the robot mode. Hopefully he’ll get a Marvel head and color, though…

Honestly, I much, much prefer more stylized designs, over plain, boring 80s G1, although I suspect we'll probably see something along the lines of TR, where they try merging the styles of IDW and 80s G1 together. I just can't see them suddenly dropping the 80s style.

IDW Straxxus feels like he was specifically tailored to the twitter/tumblr community (which isn't surprising, since that's where most of the new artists came from). It ditched the charm and individuality of the original Marvel design so that it could be more generically human.

I wouldn't call it 'lazy'. I wish people wouldn't throw that word around so easily, because it diminishes the hard work of the artists and designers.

yeah this isn't a derogatory statement

Standard human faces are pretty lazy for a design. Theres no charm or effort in the look or even much to resemble the original. Drawing isnt lazy but the design is, especially when the facial structure itself is all but copypasted across all the designs with a full face. And saying the series is targeting the twitter/tumblr crowd really isnt derogatory because that's where the comics had the greatest impact and, as stated, where a lot of the artists got their start. That's like calling out a modern cartoon with the CalArts style to its animation.

Sorry, but what else would you call the lack of creativity put into that design? The effort put into the artwork itself may not be lazy but that generalized generic humanoid face plastered onto a fairly generic design definitely is. See I think the overall design also lacks in both creativity and imagination. It's perfectly generic looking and could have been name slapped to be anyone since it doesn't even retain any design ques from the previous versions of the character. At least the Generations deluxe while different was still recognizable as Straxus at a glance. Most of the other redesigns within the current IDW have managed to maintain the iconic parts that make a character recognizable as who they are. Why they chose to deviate so much with Straxus is beyond me. If I didn't know the current design was supposed to be Straxus I would never guess it without being told just by looking at it. Like I said, maybe it'll look better translated into a three dimensional toy, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

One thing this post fails to establish is what's so memorable about the original design, outside of it's face? It's just a generic, humanoid robot. And the redesign keeps many cues from past versions, just with somewhat different proportions. The cockpit chest is clearly meant to evoke the center of the original design's torso, but is now wider. The triangles, to either side, seem to be simplified versions of those seen on the original. While the face may be completely new (and admittedly uninspired) the actual head it's attached to is quite distinctively the original's. Finally, in an admittedly weird move, the spikes sticking up from his back are taken from the Generations figure's repaint, Skullgrin.

As someone who has no attachment to Straxus's original character or design I honestly think the new IDW version looks pretty cool, aside from the head anyway. Definitely hope they go with the Marvel head, and that they at least give him the triforce shapes from the Marvel design. It reminds me a lot of Cybertron Sideways, which was always one of my favorite designs from that line, and since if he ever gets a CHUG update I'm guessing it'll almost certainly be the Armada version since that's what most fans are calling for, an IDW Straxus might be the closest we'll get. If he ends up being based on IDW it'd also give me more hope that we might get new figures of characters like Drift and Windblade.
I could totally see that happening.
That version on the left would actually be perfect for turning into Bulkhead! All he'd need is a bit of reworking the transformation to give him a bit of a belly. If that's what they're basing the new figure on, the decision to have them sharing a mold suddenly makes a lot more sense.

Looking back, I would have voted for Star Saber if I knew what the gimmick was going to be.

And the ones who haven't been done accurate to the show yet and need a superior toy to the one they got.
I know a lot of people are waiting for that.
Most of the 87 Headmasters need better representation, Blitzwing, Sandstorm, Crosshairs, Punch/Counterpunch, the Predacons, The Combaticons, the Constructicons...

Blitzwing, Sandstorm, and the combiner teams are the only ones who really need it. Blitzwing's last two toys were either terrible (T30) or hampered by forced gimmicks and size class synchronization ("all TR voyagers have to be triple changers!") and Sandstorm's T30 figure has been long out of production. The Combiner teams will probably benefit as well from being part of a line without a single focus.

Crosshairs and Punch are fine, though. The former works well with the mold he was given, the only change I could ever see needed is a new head based on the toy but that's not worth a whole redo. Punch I honestly have no clue what more you could ask for with that. Hasbro seems to think the same as it's gotten a reissue/recolor recently so they seem fine with it too.

As I have made pretty clear before: I couldn't agree more with this sentiment.
There are lots of characters that sorely need a redo in the Earthrise and Kingdom style.
TR Mindwipe doesn't look at all like the animation. TR Skullcruncher has hollow legs. Siege Shockwave is close but no cygar. T30 Sandstorm needs a G1 representation...
Your other choice are all on point too.
It does appear Hasbro is aware of this and are listening to fans.
