I just don't get the hate this movie gets online, with all the people I talked in real life, nobody ever said something bad like "ugh, that movie" or something like that. Either they loved it, or liked it or enjoyed it. Why is this movie hated so much online? And the sequels too, it's like people want it to fail because they have nothing better to do.

It's a complete rip-off of ferngully and dances with wolfes and without the "cool" 3-D is just a average sci fi movie that everyone forgot about till disney did a park area on it.

That may have something to do with the hate. I don't hate avatar just thinks it's middle of the road. Didn't see the 3-d as my eyes at the time couldn't and saw it on dvd. Many say "you don't see the full film without 3-D". If you have to have a gimmick to be a good movie you failed!

To me it was "eh". If the trailer for 2 is good might check it out but don't really care otherwise. It's just "ok" to me.

It's easy to see the hate however. Many think it's a rip-off of better films with a 3-D gimmick behind it's success.

I'm a huge fan of James Cameron. Terminator 2 is the greatest action movie ever made IMO. But I do think Avatar is his weakest movie (which isn't to say it's bad, just not up to par with his usual output). It is a great movie from a visual standpoint, which is a large reason it was a success. I'm looking forward to the sequels and fully expect them to be better than the first.

If there is one thing Cameron can do is make sequels better than the original, I am sure he cooked up a great story for the sequels.

I saw Avatar about 2 years ago for the first time. I thought it was very okay...not terrible by any means, but also not great. The story is derivative of other stuff, the characters weren't terribly memorable, and I didn't think the visual effects held up very well...a lot of it had that slightly cartoony video game look. On top of that, I didn't really care about the world or designs. I've never liked those blue aliens, and I personally found the world of Pandora to be cool, but a bit generic at the same time...again, it feels like a typical sci-fi video game environment (I'm sure I'm on the minority with this one). I was actually more interested in the military hardware side of things...which is kind of a problem for a movie that's supposed to be all about protecting nature and whatnot.

Gone with the wind is still the highest grossing film of all time. People really need to start adjusting for inflation.

It just wasn't very memorable and I found the lead to be boring and at fault for a lot of the film, wasn't rooting for anyone cause the movie didn't make me care what happened to them.

The environment was cool though, thus why the game looks interesting.

Because it was a shallow film which hid behind a fancy gimmick, and ushered in an age of said annoying gimmick. When someone says that they found the film shallow, boomers then begin complaining that we don't understand it, are haters, etc. Eventually, mild annoyance and dislike turns into actual hatred. After all, if the punishment for being late and rebellion are the same, why not rebel?

I remember the huge hype for it. I didn’t see it in theaters, but rented it shortly after it became available…and just like others here have said, it’s just, well, one big fat MEH. It’s not bad, just unmemorable.

Sure, the visuals are great. However, the characters are extremely thin and the same story has been told much better many times before. IMO, it doesn’t deserve to be the highest-grossing movie, and I have zero interest in a sequel.

I love Aliens and Terminator 2, but neither one is better than the original, IMO. I know that's sacrilege in internet film discourse, but there it is.

Avatar was fine. Even Cameron's worst movies are entertaining movies. I'll probably give the second one a shot.

For me it’s forgettable in the character and story department. Not something I hate but not something I love. Much prefer Endgame.

It's kind of depressing that the highest grossing film of all time literally does nothing special. Even its visuals have since been outclasses, but it remains undefeated.

Wonder what that says about us?

Avatar is okay. I don't have any hate to it, but I also don't have any love for it. I've only seen it once, and I think once is more than enough. It's strength is it's visuals, it's weakness is it's content. Like others said, it's a story we've all seen before, like EPIC, Ferngully, mixed with a little Pocahontas. I tend to call it Smurfahontas. Because it's like the opposite of Smurfs, where they're blue giants, and it's the plot of Pocahontas mixed with Ferngully.

It's just something I've seen a 100 times before. Things that have all done it better. Ferngully, is a way better film, with the same kind of messages being brought forth. Plus, it's decided whether or not it is going to be animated, or live action. It didn't choose to be both. (Let's be honest, Avatar is just as much an animated film, as it is a live action one. There are entire chunks of the movie, that has zero people in it.) It also is a shorter movie, with some wonderful voice talent, and it's a musical. It's a musical where Tim Curry orgasms about pollution (If you watch the extended version of that song). The content in something like Ferngully, is just way better done.

The only thing I would say Avatar does have going for it is it's visuals. But, that is all it is. It's a very pretty movie, that just repeats a bunch of other stories that have already been done before. And, I must say it doesn't even do it all too well. Certainly doesn't do it in away that makes it feel unique and fresh, like something like Star Wars did when it was new. Avatar has the visuals of a masterpiece painting, but the content of a well beaten horse, and the depth of a mudpuddle.

Well, its 3D gimmick was somewhat special during its heyday. And that's why it made all its money (plus launching in an otherwise uncompetitive December).

But that's why it gets so much residual backlash nowadays, is that it's a film that's all style and no substance, and detractors fire back at it due to how it helps perpetuate the notion that success = quality.

No, they did not. Avatar reclaimed its throne after a brief re-release.

That aside, even if you personally didn't like Endgame, its success actually made sense. It was the payoff for ten years and 19 film's worth of hype-building. A shit-ton of actual work went into ensuring that film would be insanely successful.

Avatar was a gimmick and a complete fluke.
