For all the bad rep G1 Transformers' animation gets though, it really wasn't the worst for its time. The only other Toei produced cartoons I've seen from around the same time period are Dragon Ball and a few episodes of Mazinger Z and Voltron. Setting art styles aside, I don't recall them looking consistently superior in terms of animation/production quality (although it's been a very long time since I last watched those so I could be way off). I definitely feel like the Transformers movie has better animation than say Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies released the same year (no doubt down to the bigger budget).

And for all the shit Akom squeezed out for Transformers... Dragon Ball/ Dragon Ball Z had Last House and Studio Live on animation duties every few episodes and they were arguably worse. The dreaded Triangle Guy :confused2

My son is 8 and we have watched TF:TM 3 times because he loves it. He loves Macross and Transformers much more than Disney movies. But he may be an exception. :)

When I told my wife that a 4K version will be released in August, she asked if it would be something to watch with our two boys. Now our kids are just four and almost seven. The Movie is definitely intended for six year olds and older, so only our oldest son could watch it. But having only some basic English at school, he would have to understand the story based on the whole context or on what I quickly tell him while watching. And he hasn't watched the G1 series, so he hardly knows who is who, and he lacks the background information the G1 series provided. So yeah, for him it would be a loud, violent toy commercial I believe, like @onnsake mentioned. I'm going to try to watch the G1 series with my sons first at one moment. Until the time is right, I'll watch the Movie alone, again and again. :D

I respect your opinion, and I too think TF:TM does have some moments of absolutely gorgeous animation.

But I think the sad reality is that the only people that really care about it or respect it are TF fans like us. To the general public, to animation aficionados, and especially Japanese anime fans, the movie is not in any way regarded a classic or timeless or to film critics at the time, even "good."

I definitely think it's best looking toy commercial of all time. I just think that the only people that think this is a classic in animation history are likely on this board.

But hey...you have your opinion, I have mine, but at least we agree on the main thing: it's a beautifully animated movie, one of my all time favorites, and I'll never get tired of watching it.

Yeah, several years back I tried to show it to my nephews who were about 10 and 7 at the time....they couldn't have been less interested. They just gave me this look like "what is this shit?" and immediately went back to whatever the latest Pixar movie at the time was.

I showed Transformers the movie to my stepson when he was 6. He proceeded to watch it 3 times in a row, and it became a favorite film of his. When my youngest son was 5, I let him watch it, and he proceeded to watch it almost every day for weeks. So I don’t believe it’s just for our generation.

I'd like see WB remaster GoBots: Battle of the Rocklords. It doesn't have the wild swings of TFTM but it's still a very solid movie.

My 6 and 9 year olds have seen most of Mtmte, TFTM, headmasters, victory, masterforce, beast wars, and beast machines, as well as robotech so it seems to hold up well over time.

When you say classic, are we talking Pinocchio, Fantasia, Studio Ghibli flicks, etc?

Transformers will never be held in that regard; those flicks broke barriers and changed the industry.

NOW, I would say Transformers 86 is a cult classic with a devoted following. Which isn't too bad if you ask me :)

Ah yeah, I think I do remember seeing it available for digital now. But yeah, didn't come with the Bluray, which I also have.

The “reformatting” scene where Megatron becomes Galvatron is gonna look spectacular in UHD.

So... Has anyone got an update on their order? I don't remember seeing a post somewhere that said how long it would take for Shout Factory to start shipping them.

Still no news on the UK release date :(

Given that US and UK distributors were mentioned when this was announced I was really expecting a simultaneous release, or at least the UK release shortly after.

Does anyone even know what the lithograph is supposed to look like or do we just expect it to be good?

Got to watch the new 35th Anniversary 4k Transformers: The Movie yesterday at the final technical approval session. It looks stunning. Glows and energy effects are especially incredible. Levels of detail never seen before.

yep, what I’ve seen is definitely an improvement over the old blu ray. It’s still got the soul of the film, but they’ve pulled out quite a bit more detail.

As for the lithos, it’s the cover of the steelbook basically. There should be news soon on the other versions of the film as well, especially for UK/EU fans.
