Changing the characters is always going to get backlash. Look at how people react to changes to characters in our fandom? Trukk vs Munkey?
Especially in regards to unnecessary changes, the change from Prime to Primal had a tangible effect that made a difference while changing a characters established race doesn't do anything to improve the story or the character, you're just slightly changing their appearance. It's one of the most shallow ways of making something look 'different' without really having to work for it. Same with swapping a characters gender, there's rarely a good reason for such a change. I know the inevitable excuse will be 'diversity' but the only diversity that truly matters is diversity of thought, belief and experience, nothing to do with the physical. You can have a room of people who look alike yet they each have had drastically different experiences, beliefs and stories in their lives, and have a room filled with many different kinds of people that mostly think the same and share the same beliefs. Obviously the opposite can be true as well but my point is that diversity shouldn't just stop with different races and cultures, when it's much deeper than what's on the surface. He said that once?? Because that's totally on the money, but I suppose now he's changed his tune, heh. Though I can't say I blame him too much this time, I suspect if he had anything but positive things to say about the casting he'd be called things even if it's his work they're adapting.
I agree, which is why I think racial and cultural diversity can only make a production better, as such a diverse array of backgrounds brings more diversity of thoughts, beliefs, and experience.
i mean dream and the endless are primordial entities absolutely beyond human reckoning. It's like if the sea became sentient and was like "she/her?not today thank you." folks upset about this are thunderously missing the point.
I guess it's because he owns or created those characters and doesn't see this as too much of a change.
I don't know why people are even arguing about the actors. It's Netflix adapting something. It's going to suck more likely than not, going by their track record.
Many of us have, but keep in mind the original series ended in 1996, so for some us us it's been a long time since we reviewed it. Most of us only remember the important parts of the story and have forgotten a lot of the small details. As I said for me it has to be at least 10 to 20 years since I read all the issues.
Just off the top of my head: House of Cards, Annihilation, some of the Marvel shows, Queen's Gambit, Locke & Key, The Crown... Plenty of great adaptations that are Netflix productions. And to be honest, most of the Netflix adaptations I've seen that were garbage, like Altered Carbon or the Old Guard, were based on garbage source material anyway. I'd say 50/50 is about right.
What's weird is that Neil Gaiman has been making multiple adaptations of his works recently but all on different streaming services; Good Omens on Amazon, American Gods on Starz, and now Sandman on Netflix. His direct involvement gives me hope that this will be a good adaptation.
Not even the actual physical sea, but the very idea of a sea being something that can exist. head_asplode.gif Regarding the old Gaiman tweet, his example is a "Batman" who isn't a wealthy vigilante and doesn't dress in a bat costume--the things that conceptually define him as Batman. Notice he doesn't once mention race, nationality, or even hair color. The idea of Batman doesn't depend on those things. He's not contradicting himself, even if we ignore the fact that Death's race is The Endless and not white, black, Asian, etc. And that's looking at particulars. Looking at Sandman more generally, the central theme of the work is change. People aren't just missing the point, they're actively running away from it.
People aren't missing the point, they are simply attached to the versions presented in the original comic books. Add to that stuff like The Watch, etc where ignoring the character designs often signal the wholesale abandonment of storylines, character arcs, etc and fandoms now have a visceral reaction to this. People are not idiots, and have noticed a pattern since 2016 Ghostbusters of studios making sweeping changes, attacking the fans who complain, and the final product being crap. Changing one character because the actor happens to not look like them, but can capture the essence of the character in their performance doesn't get the same reactions. Yet, lickspittles and bad faith actors will attack anyone who remotely suggests that not even attempting to capture the look of any of the main characters may bode ill for the rest of the production as evil and stupid.
Forming an attachment to any single version from the original comic is missing the point of the original comic.
