Considering we've had robot balls and a robot humping a person's leg, I don't think children were ever part of the equation.

the upper jaw and nose looks like a dog's snout, the bottom jaw(s?) looks like insect mandibles

 

And I loved it.

 

Bumblebee was not supposed to speak from the get-go, so his face was designed without a mouth. At least not a regular one. He has no lips but rather a mouth plate. This design became very popular among fans which is why they reused it for the 2018 movie. I think it's perfect the way it is because it emphasizes his eyes and cheeks. However, it doesn't work well without the mouthpiece. His face looks terrifying.
Now, in those images, he's actually missing the mouthpiece. That's all. There is no mouth. It is just what his face looks like underneath.

 

Goodness. In this image it looks like he is getting something forcefully shoved up his robot butt.

 

They just deleted the speaker and that's what's left.
