I haven't played too many deck building games, mainly Thunderstone, but I enjoyed it. Looking forward to giving this a spin.

Renegade is one of my favorite game makers, with the others being fantasy flight and days of wonder. As this will be a major focus for renegade I can’t wait for Gen Con, luckily my badge rolled over to this year with last year being canceled.

Card game, but different than for example magic or Pokémon as you won’t have to buy a hundred blinds packs hoping to get one card.

Obviously I don't have the game in front of me, but usually this type of game has the same kind of format:

You (and your other players) start with a pre-built deck of cards.

The rest of the game is piles of cards. The top one might be flipped over or not. This is usually the "dungeon" you're exploring. It sounds like this game might have "planets" instead of dungeons.

Off to the side, there could be a "resources" deck. This could be cards that say, "Spend X resources for Optimus Prime's gun". If you pull enough resources or find enough on the planets you can buy those resources and add them to your deck to be pulled later.

As you "Explore the planets" you will go through the planet cards. Maybe some of them will be resources, items, armor, allies. Some of them may be obstacles. Do X to draw the next card.

At some point, it sounds like you will have a boss fight of some kind. This might be at the end of the planet (place Soundwave randomly at the bottom of one of the planets on start up) or it could be a deck you bring out when you meet a certain requirement: When 3 planets have been fully investigated, put the Soundwave deck into play. Then, you would fight that deck and respond to the cards it throws at you (Draw 1 Soundwave card. It says Soundwave deals -2 health to the left most Hero)

Anyway, this is all just speculation based on some games I have played in the past. Usually all deck building games start out the players with a prebuilt deck that you then ADD cards to as you play. You usually buy or discover those cards as you go. The enemies are usually on auto, responding to game states or doing things according to their decks, which you pull for them.

To add a little more clarity (I realized I didn't do a great job, sorry):

There might be four piles of cards in front of your player area. These would be planets. The cards in them would be random (or perhaps preset). That would be your "game board" which you would react with.

I was one of the moderators for the Facebook group that was dedicated to discussion of the Transformers Trading Card Game by WotC before it was canceled last summer.

For folks that are active on Facebook, this group will hopefully be just as active and well-organized:

Considering how well the last card game worked out, I'm gonna pass.

I get the suspicion, but I'm willing to give it a go. Two different games, two different companies, two different modes. I think the last game thought "Transformers plus blind packs! We're going to make all the money!" While there are some games that can still operate under that model, a lot of games have moved to a deck building or living card game format. That let's people play, but gives them all the cards they need in one bundle. The hook is the "Expansions." The other game was largely competitive whereas this will most likely be cooperative.

YES! I love board games (and card games), I always wished there were more Transformers games out there: BRING IT ON!
I'm hoping for some sort of strategic wargame or/and a skirmish game down the line.

Also great that it seems to be solo compatible.

I'd love a good TF strategy game that really made good use of transforming as a tactic + the super powers some G1ers had.

this isn't a CCG. If you buy this at launch and they cancel the whole project a week later, you've lost nothing. that box you bought will always be playable and the best part is you don't have to pester your friends to also buy cards so they can play it with you. buy the box, grab 3 friends, have a ball.

this is all assuming the final product is fun to play, but I'll probably pick it up to add to our pile, regardless.

yeah, this model is much more appealing to me.

Generally do you shuffle the decks in this style of games to create "randomness"?? (also it's not the same wy every time?)

(also, apologies for the noob questions!)

The game like this I played had you build a "stock" deck that you then shuffled for randomness. There's also probably two or three other piles that will be randomized. For a more in depth look at a game like this, I found this link for Thunderstone, a game I played and enjoyed. Can't say they will be the same, but it gives you an idea of all the fun they could have with this game if they do it right.

I am continually surprised by the number of Transformers fans that seem to be only into Transformers. I always erroneously assume everyone is into all of the hobbies and collectables that I am.

I've been excitedly waiting for this announcement and cant wait to get my hands on it. I'm a little concerned about the evergreen artwork on the front with the IDW artwork on the side... hopefully the card art isn't as confused.

For those unfamiliar with deckbuilders, don't be scared. They aren't complicated and they also aren't a money sink. Everything you need is in the one box. If it's popular the company will release some expansions, however even then, most expansions are stand alone these days.

It sounds like you will have a particular character to build a deck around. Not quite sure how I feel about that, since there aren't any on that cover that I'd like to play as. Still, I'm in - Deckbuilders are generally super fun.

    >Deck building
    Oh.

Okay don't get me wrong, deck building games can be really fun. But, well, 1: it doesnt seem to be playable on your own, you have to have someone to play with. And, well, I don't. Between Covid and just not having transportation to regularly get to a LGS, I just can't play this at the moment. And 2: I was really hoping when the partnership with Renegade was announced that we'd be getting a TTRPG, because there's just so much potential with Transformers for a DnD-esque system. Theres so many continuities you could have as settings, plus pre-war or post-war campaigns, and character building, like making a triple changer scramble city limb, or a headmaster load-bearer? Transformers is the franchise that would best fit a TTRPG with just how much pre-existing material there is to make new adventures, new characters, and all that.
Well, heres hoping Hasbro's pushing of Wizards of the Coast to do more licensed stuff means we could eventually get a Transformers TTRPG out of them...

I dig tabletop strategy games and was into pen-n-paper RPGs in my teens/early 20s... just never have stumbled into card games for whatever reason (but I'm not 1/2 bad at Texas Hold'em)

(As far as other hobbies, personally I snowboard, run, draw, bike, hike, play bass and video games a bit)

I talk for a bit about the information we know about the game and some speculation about the game based on the Power Rangers version shipping soon to people who preordered it. On top of that, I try to assure wary TFTCG players who might be reluctant to try it after the cancellation of the TCG by Wizards of the Coast.

    Hope this helps:
1 - They mention a co-op mode. A lot of co-op games can be played on your own where you just play multiple roles/characters by yourself.
2 - You're in luck. Renegade are also working on a TTRPG.

Plenty of great card games out there - hopefully this is one of them. I used to work for an online Texas Hold'em site, interesting times but it helped me learn a lot about the game :)

Was never able to master boarding, I had to stick to skis.
