While I've already previewed it in my testing thread, it was probably time for a proper thread.

Now that I have some time off for Easter, I decided to tackle something I'd been meaning to do for a while, this abominable sonic weapon.

as always, 'bigger is never big enough', so I went big.

Unfortunately, it's so heavy that Abominus cannot hold it upright without support from another hand, or positioning the elbows so they can't pivot. He also needs to be nice and stable on his feet too, to support the weight.

It's also too big for Hun Grrr to use, making him look completely diminutive.

The only reasonable thing to do, of course, was to reduce the size of the gun to typical CW weapon size in order to make sure both Abominus and Hun Grrr can hold it securely.

..... ah who am I kidding...

Abominus use both hands for killing!!!

Instead, I naturally doubled down with the extra heft of a metal chainsaw bayonet and long-range scope. These combiners are warriors and will put up with all adversities!

    Yep, a little Prime homage.

I'll give it a spray of gunmetal once the rain has stopped in a few days.

OK, so perhaps I overstated the arms supporting thing. Going back, Abominus can hold the weight with one arm, Blot's knees were a bit soft, but his thighs (the elbow) held up to the weight.

He can even wield them Akimbo, though tilting back is advised to keep balance.
Sorry about the poor shots, I couldn't be arsed using proper lighting, so had to shoot fast with a small depth of field, or hold forever with the shutter open.

    Still, 2 handed looks cooler.

And because I'm tragic and I love the old Action Master 'Power Plans', I couldn't help but do this while I wait for parts to print.

    (Still raining here)

    Cheers bud, much appreciated!

    Update:
It's still been wet and windy. The filament is breaking at least once a day and stringing is occurring where it normally doesn't, but I've managed to do a bit of painting when I could.

Once I'm done, I'll try one last print of each component with optimised meshes and then I'll post it all on Cults3d.

    Hey sneaker fans!

So, I got distracted. Testing for Slicer displayed a completely different and unwanted approach with supports when printing the gun. I think I'm going to have to do custom supports as usual.

In the meantime, I made this cool boat for all the little guys to use and do tricks in.

Fortunately, I found a second creative use for it. I know it's a well trodden path, but I figured i wanted a go at it. Especially now the TT version is looking so nice, yet costs so much.
I'm still not decided on the final size, so more experiments to go.

Awesome work, totally understand the impulse of wanting upgrade old mate Abom with all these new takes on the horizon.

That looks great. Minor nitpick, but having the scope or dot sight at that height doesn't make sense since the back of the rifle blocks the sight picture.

Thank you. I'm certainly late to this party, but enjoying the process of doing the upgrade my way.

Cheers Toker! Yeah, that's a bit of a legacy holdover from the G1 gun. It places a cylinder, (representing a lens), at the front of that blocking area, but no clear sign of an eyepiece. My assumption is that the purpose of the back component would include some kind of elaborate viewfinder, as functionally, it makes an unwieldy stock. I try to respect the original design features as much as possible, but I specifically made the area directly below the rounded part a square eyepiece for my own piece of mind. I couldn't make it too elaborate though, as the back of the rifle is the printing surface.

Sure the angles are all over the place, but these are sophisticated aliens and can presumably do wonders with mirrors and lenses, or even small screens.

That would make sense if the rear was an angled scope. I'm not familiar enough with the original G1 rifle design. I only own the Matrix Workshop rifle and it doesn't have the angled scope. It just has 5mm holes for adding the individual guns. Your design is much more appealing.

I'm not familiar with 3D printing. Is there a way to make the rifle lighter? Or would you just have to take a drill and bore out as much of the barrel as possible to reduce the weight?

Yes, but unfortunately, I think it's a case of diminishing returns. The guns were printed at 10% infill, (the prints can be completely hollow if the geometry allows it), but that won't make too much difference to the overall weight. As I found in the second post, it was more an issue of Blot's knees being a weak-point. Angled the right way his thighs as elbows can take the weight. The limbs aren't really designed for much additional weight and my copy may be worse than most.

    Thank you. Much appreciated.

    ---------------

I think I'm settled for ~90mm length. It's so easy to give these guys clown shoes, but this seems to be the best compromise between stability and maneuverability.

It should look a little more natural when painted. I'm waiting on magenta paint now, but I imagine this won't be easy to match.

A very early proto, but I now have a better appreciation for why combiner hands and fingers usually end up proportionately large.

I'll be increasing the size and doing away with the adjustable thumb on a ball joint. No amount of thumb's-up is worth a less-than secure grip on his gun. I may add a pivot to the wrist however.

    Love this!

So you mind if I ask what brand and model printer you're using?

Thank you! I'm using a Creality Ender 5. It's just like the Ender 3, but with differences in the frame, build height and pathways.

After the last update I was able to refine the generic hand, making sure the fingers were secure enough not to pop out when adjusting and adding the wrist pivot, which allows approx. 40-45 degrees swing back and fourth.

It takes some effort to put the wrist piece in though, and probably won’t come out without a fight either. But that was the only way to make it firm and secure.

The wrist offers a better range of movement, but won’t wear as quickly as a ball-joint.

Knowing that I had a working baseline concept, I decided I liked the POTP knuckle spikes and wanted to incorporate an homage to that, while also reducing the overall size a tad.

Overall, it seemed to work well and feel better proportioned. It also looked better printed in purple filament. All that was left was to paint it up.

I then lightly coated with magenta, making sure to avoid moving parts and scrape points on the hands.

I have to say, your prints are so smooth that I honestly thought they came from a resin printer and not from an FDM printer. Great work.
