It's interesting how you guys post these comparison shots with older versions in order to demonstrate the superiority of the SS86 figure, but personally I'm left thinking the opposite. Like barry, I too loved the original G1 toy, even if I didn't like the character's portrayal in the cartoon. I'm reminded of how excellently proportioned that figure is, even without resorting to a fake chest. I like that it doesn't try to be human-shaped (like so many of the Dery designs), and transforms into a larger bot than might be expected from the size of the alt mode. And I like the way his arms aren't jammed up against the side of him. SS86 HR looks like he's wearing an ill-fitting suit jacket or is sitting in one of those tiny chairs at the DMV, jammed between some other oversized bots waiting for their turn at the counter.

As for the Targetmaster figure... wow. I'm reminded of how I really need to pick up some figures from the Titans Return line (and its derivatives). I've never liked the concept of Headmasters in general, but damn this line churned out some great looking toys. This Targetmaster Hot Rod looks considerably better than the regular TR one, too (chest and colors are much nicer). It doesn't really fit my collection, but I wouldn't hesitate to grab one if I found it for a reasonable price.

I had passed up SS86 Hot Rod on the shelves many times for multiple reasons:
    1) I don't collect WFC figures, other than a couple of exceptions I made for classic favorites (Bluestreak for example).
    2) The small size didn't seem to warrant the price tag.
    3) I really don't like animation-accurate toys, given the low artistic bar set by the cartoon designs. My benchmark has always been the G1 toys and their box art.
    4) I have no real fondness for the Hot Rod character as depicted in the original series or movie.

However, I happened upon an opened (actually mangled) SS86 HR box that had been robbed of its accessories and severely marked down, so I picked it up to see if the fuss was warranted. My impressions are as follows:
    1) It's tiny!
    2) The transformation is pleasantly complex and creative, if not actually fun. Mine was missing the instructions, but it wasn't difficult to figure out. It's a little more fussy than I would like, but shows impressive engineering regardless.
    3) The proportions and overall sculpt are remarkably accurate to the cartoon (a plus to many, but a big negative for me).
    4) Articulation is nice, but it suffers from the drawbacks of overly-tall shoulders, just like most other Rodimuses (Rodimi?).
    5) The yellow joints are an eyesore. I'm assuming that particular plastic was stronger than the other colors? Otherwise I have no idea why this choice was made. The other plastics look like they were carved from bars of soap. There's a "softness" to the colors and opacity that is hard to describe, but doesn't give the impression of quality.
    6) The head sculpt is excellent.

I can't say I love it, or even genuinely like it, but my lack of admiration is more for aesthetic reasons than any other. It's a nicely-designed toy, if a little plain. I completely understand why people enjoy it, though. I'm now debating what to do with this figure. I've thought about painting it up in a Cosmos color scheme, or maybe Devcon. If I don't paint it, I may just use the head on a custom.

Not sure what to call this guy.

One of the biggest issues regarding the single Titanmasters was finding suitable bodies for them though Apeface and Repugnus later had the problem solved for them.

The biggest slap in the face in that respect was not getting Blitzwing repainted as Flywheels/Sky Tread. I don't like the Siege figure.

This one though always gravitated to Triggerhappy's body for me though. I get a Hellbat or Starscream vibe from it though looking at him lately, the face is looking more feminine to me.

Despite having both figures for years, it's only lately I'm starting to really like this combination. Lately I've taken to trying to find suitable bodies for all my free range Titanmasters so I've been giving them more attention.

    Anyway I've rambled on enough.

Love this guy. Only got him recently, and I was overwhelmingly surprised at how solid he is! Springer has been my favorite Transformer since 1986.

I liked this springer too, found him at a Toys "R" Us store in Taiwan last weekend, and he's very poseable with his two swords! :)

Totally! Space Pirates, along with Time Wars, was one of the last TF:UK stories where I can vividly recall where I was when I first read it.
