Definitely the former. I don't think people should be stupid enough to fall for it, but it's just not okay to prey on people's ignorance for the sake of a joke.

My local Ollie's at the time got in 3 pallets full of Trypticons. Ollie's is hit or miss with their deals - I've seen a lot of smaller items they sell only $1-$2 off retail pricing. Their Transformers are at a max at 66% off retail pricing like with the Trypticon but not always. The netflix Ultra Magnus was 50% off and ER Optimus Prime/Double Dealer were 60% off. No matter what still a good deal.

I doubt that Ollie's would only pay $5 per Trypticon - Ollie's isn't even a nationwide or worldwide store chain. Yes, they got a great deal on it and cheap but not $5 dollars. Dollar Tree makes on average .35 cents per dollar spent at their stores while Walmart/Target makes on average .24 cents per dollar.

I'll just add, the Ollie's Army coupons are fairly frequent for me (good for another 10-20%) and after Xmas they take I think another 25% or so off toys. I think I ended up with like 18$ in the Netflix Ultra Magnus.

yep. I mentioned previously that I got 2 Netflix Ultra Magnus at Ollie’s for $21.25 each and Earthrise Optimus Prime for $10 dollars. With all the coupons, no way Trypticon would cost Ollie’s $5. There are only 389 Ollie’s location in US. Plus, not every single Ollie’s got in all same amount of Transformers. Stock varies widely per store. My local Ollie’s only got in 2 Double Dealer and 2 Optimus Prime while I know other Ollie’s received 25-50 or each.

Meant it as humor man. So definitely humourous prank. It's amusing you are pointing out a post where people believe this dude is picking up Haslab Unicron at a discount joint. Literally wishful thinking. Hence why I said your username checks out.

I just took an Optimus and Doubledealer back to my Ollie's after a lack of interest from anyone here to buy them.

So, their prices ends in .99 cents... Here we have the General Dollar Stores, where the prices are all dollar increments.

Nice find, I really need to track down a Singe. Really wish we had them up here by now, looks like they are mainly in Cali.

Yeah but here's the thing...the store is called 99 cents ONLY, haha. So it's a bit stranger.

Yes, I got that. I'm just saying that their intent was to have prices with .99 cents.

The intent was originally that everything was indeed 99 cents. That went out the window more than a decade ago. Nowadays, even your explanation doesn't work. Their prices are all ending in .9999 (four decimal places). Technically a dollar.

In fact, despite my theorizing in that blog entry I linked to (which itself was written more than a decade ago), it's all a facade. My understanding now is that, even if you DID buy 100 items, you wouldn't save that penny implied by the .0001 shy of a dollar marked on the receipt.

You know I've heard about this happening to a lot of "dollar" stores (or pound land or whatever other singular piece of currency store they have elsewhere), but I thought Dollar Tree would be the last bastion. Some people however reported them selling Authentics there for normal prices....not sure if this is universal though, haven't been to mine in a bit.

I haven't gotten much in the way of Transformers at Dollar Tree recently (most recent TF stuff I got has been those figurines, and that was more than a year ago that I got those). I can affirm that I've seen a select few "more than a dollar" items, but that's VERY uncommon there.

Compared to the 99 cent store, where $1.99, $2.99, $3.99, $5.99 and so on (oddly enough, on my most recent receipt, those prices ARE exactly those, and not, say, $1.9999...) are quite common.

It's even weirder to me because I remember a few years back when they got in a bunch of Lego Dimensions stuff and left it at a dollar. Werent they the place that randomly found Generations GDO stock though, I swear that was marked at $5.
