Think they missed an opportunity to at least show this off with MP-44. If anything it confirms thus is an one-off as they ve shown no desire to show how it fits with what they've been doing the 5 or 6 years

 

That's my feeling as well, personally. I know it's an unpopular one, and I understand why totally. I'm usually all about toon accuracy myself. But he was featured soooo rarely, and had such an odd design in terms of his arm placement, I feel like they just decided taking some artistic liberties and going more in a hybrid toon-toy direction was warranted in this one special case. And since they were celebrating the City too, it adds even further justification.

Earlier in the topic I tried bashing a toon version of him (not just decco but also smoothing out some of the molding) and it was just like... not worth it to me. And probably isn't to TT either. I think this was a rare case of, "Do we really make what's likely to be a really niche appeal character with an MP budget allocation and level of engineering that is truly toon accurate complete with weird arms, or do we instead double down on the car element and aim to sell him to that niche instead which is at least probably larger than the niche who loves him in the cartoon he almost never appeared in?"

Of course as always I hope for those who are super into the character to get a version someday they want. But I can also see the logic behind going this way in this one-off instance. And in that one-off context, I also just personally think he looks really cool lol.

Now I don’t even know how to interpret the fact that Reboost hit #1 in sales numbers but Skids has not. Reboost was “invented” like a month ago for crying out loud. Is Skids so unpopular that more people rather get a non character? Is red that much better than blue? Was the Motocompo the deal breaker? I just don’t get it.

 

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I can put Skids with Tracks, Wheeljack, The Datsuns and Red Alert. There’s enough of them to bridge the gap.

I do wonder if Skids was better off not being made in the first place. The G1 toys justify him, as well as the comics. But as far as the show goes, B.O.T. got more screen time than Skids. As far as I know, the Auto-Scout had it worse than Skids.

 

If they'd gone for toon accuracy, I don't think they could've one-upped the XTB Skids. If you went any more cartoon accurate than that he'd look awful (let's be real, the animation model left something to be desired). I guess that's why he's so toy-oriented? I'd like to see a toon redeco, but honestly it might require too many changes to the mould.

I'll get one out of curiosity I suppose, but to be honest Savant already serves my Skids needs. Which I didn't know I had until I owned him.

I don't know if I even like the face much more. It's a bit better, I guess?

The more I look at the official pics, the more little things I see I don't like about this figure. It looks skinny compared to other MP's, very skinny arms with large fists. And his head seems placed too far back. Its nitpicky I guess, but I feel Xtransbot's version made better choices esthetically.

I don’t much care for Masterpiece figures myself, but after checking out the images for Skids, I can’t help but feel he looks a little cheap, especially for an MP figure. I do like his head sculpt though, and his color palette looks accurate too. So for those people super excited about getting him, all the power to you~!

Loads of MP or 3PMP figures use panels to form thighs or forearms these days. It's part of getting the aesthetics right in both modes.
