This is 10000000% why I can't understand why anyone is stupid enough to spend money on this nonsense. Just because you "bought" the NFT doesn't mean anyone else is prevented from also "having" it. Yours essentially just has some additional digital code embedded that makes it "special" but adds no real tangible value beyond someone saying it does. And costs fuck tons of energy to generate on top of that. People are so fucking dumb.

It's rich people stuff. Probably some kinda money laundering scheme we don't understand. A lot of these are being bought by oil sheikhs or, more likely, their children who got tired of wiping their asses with hundred dollar bills.

I mean, good for the random meme people who are making money like crazy girl but yeesh, buy a second string Chinese hockey team or something.

It's art trade, only digital. As is, many expensive works are basically bought and then shelved into a warehouse, sits in there until it's loaned to exhibits, or resold for more money, if possible.

    Now it's just bragging rights.

It is and isn't, as has been mentioned, ownership of this is entirely meaningless. At least if you own the Mona Lisa, you own close to a billion dollar original painting.

You own Crazy Girlfriend meme and, yep, you sure do, champ! High five.

I can still put it on a t-shirt and have more than you.

You buy a digital image of Optimus Prime and you're pretty much just buying a print, a really expensive print but a print.

Hasbro still owns the Transformers, Optimus Prime and Autobots and all those other things they will take you to court over if you're ever foolish to think of putting your digital image on a t-shirt and trying to sell it at HasCon 2024.

But I put that same image on this website and go, "look at what some idiot bought for a half million dollars" free use, baby.

NFTs will destroy the planet because blockchain files use too much electricity.
Buy electric cars to save the planet from using gasoline.
Apparently, cars use less power than JPGs.

You bought digital art that you will not fully own.

You're someone's mark either way, kids.

NFTs do nothing, cars do something. As demand for electric cars goes up, so does demand for higher quality electric car components like battery technologies, and so will electrical demand need to shift to cleaner, more efficient sources to fuel that demand. That demand is a real thing, it's a flawed way to break people's dependency on gasoline and on coal and other limited-resource-dependent power plants, but at least it's striving to achieve the betterment of people getting around.

NFTs do none of that, they achieve no major goal, they are merely encrypted public ledgers to prove you "own" some digital nonsense that a few people are trying to force into becoming an oversight-free alternative currency. It's a fantasy and a money laundering scheme.

The thing about electric anything is that electricity must come from somewhere. Today's electric cars may keep you from burning fossil fuel but the current demand for electricity requires the power plants to still burn them. When you buy an electric car you're just offsetting the emissions. You're not really preventing them.

Keep in mind that California has to buy electricity from other states and that demand is only going to go up when they all start driving electric.

That's where we should be transitioning more and more to renewable and nuclear energy. But regardless, blockchain is pointless compared to actual transportation, and by design is going to be using more and more and more resources as the math problems the crypto mining computers are doing get more and more complex.

If I understand it right (I might not, I'm not a computer guy) it's basically a bitcoin, except with an identifier to make it unique. (As opposed to regular crypto, where they're all interchangeable.) And like bitcoin, you're not buying something with practical real-world use, you're just buying an asset of limited supply and depending on the scarcity to make it valuable. Which works great as long as everyone else agrees that yes, this does make it valuable, and very poorly as soon as enough people go "but I mean not really."

Bare with me as I don’t understand any of this but is this how Khloe Kartrashian was able to “scrub” the internet of that untouched photo of her in a bikini? She owned the picture, turned it into an NFT and then can threaten legal action to anyone sharing it and potentially making money (ie traffic on a website)
