This sounds more like investing in Pet Rocks.  If you\'ve got money to blow, then go for it.  It\'s your money.

The production of Pet Rocks doesn't tend to be massively and increasingly disastrous for the environment like crypto stuff, including NFTs, does.

somewhat appropriate considering it's basically a decepticon plot

the whole crypto "industry" should be smashed and its perpetrators imprisoned, though. streaming media is worse than just owning media, sure, and is pretty much getting hacked apart so that giant corporations can grip crumbs ever more tightly but it and online games are still a good step away from the nft nonsense because there is an actual point to it. there is a point to having a server for an online game. you don't burn huge amounts of electricity so that you can say that your round of WoW is "worth" something and then parade it around.

physical art is mostly a scam, too. the super-valuable pieces are paid to be valued highly so that a rich person can donate a large sum of money in art to a museum and then write that off for taxes.

i'm also mature enough to admit that, sure, plastic toy production at least of this scale possibly or probably shouldn't exist. *shrug*

...yes it does? You have to run the machines to make the cute pet rock packaging, source the plastic components for the box, then put the pet rock on a truck/plane/train to get sold at the store

I can do you one better. If I had to give up every last transformer in my collection - and honestly, all of my plastic toys - in exchange for guaranteed survival of our species and civilization... I would not hesitate to make the trade. And I'm sure I am FAR from alone here on TFW2005.

Unfortunately, as it stands, giving up all my toys wouldn't do jack shit, given that most of the climate destruction is being done by a handful of corporations controlled by a handful of people. That being said, between this shit and the news that Hasbro is also jacking up prices AGAIN, I can no longer justify being part of this hobby. Whatever transformer I bought last (can't recall, it's been over half a year due to personal stuff) will LITERALLY be the last I ever buy, new OR used. It's over. I'm fucking done.

I'm not gonna fault anyone here who continues to buy transformers, though. This is just my personal decision.

IIRC a few months back 1 of the freelancers Hasbro contracted was thinking about getting an NFT for a digital sculpt he made in zbrush. Memory is hazy at the moment but maybe Hasbro saw that as a way to not only make more money but discourage any of their digital sculpt files from being shared/sold after they’ve already been used for production.

    I could be wrong.

Why though? Perhaps the mass-farmers, but not the dudes doing it on their PCs.
    Completely agree.
The "worth" of a recreational activity is a bit hard to define, especially when neither online gaming nor NTF are particularly vital to our survival. You can't really value one recreational pursuit over another.
Actually didn't know about the tax bit, might look into it myself.
It's likely the forum will always have debates about the topic of toy production, seeing as it is a bit hard to rationalise.

Think baseball cards, except the cards are digital, instead of something you can hold in your hand.

Because it just burns a lot of resources for no practical reason and by design has to burn more and more resources. It's like setting fire to increasingly large amounts of gasoline because you know a guy who can leech from the refinery so it doesn't cost you much anyway.

Cryptomining is wasteful beyond what consumer capitalism already is, which is already immensely destructive and a real threat to civilisation on this planet, because there isn't even any thing produced. There is no cycle of dishwasher purchase that's been turbocharged through planned obsolesence and advertising, there's just the explicit destruction of an increasing amount of resources so that a number can go up.

Phasing out toys for digital toys? Kind of confusing.

Anyone else remember when it was environmentally friendly to ditch paper and cardboard for plastic to save trees and save the planet? Now plastic is evil and screw the trees. I guess the final solution is digital toys? Depending on who is the one who makes money from this of course.

So what is this, a way to store and transfer proof of IP ownership through the use of a digital token? I don\'t see the point for something like Transformers but I\'m sure there\'s someone more tech savvy than me who does

... and the digital baseball cards are also freely available to anyone who wants them bad enough, identically, down to the pixel, with zero difference whatsoever, but only one contains a unique digital token that allows its owner to feel their otherwise completely identical digital baseball card that everyone else has free access to is unique and therefore worth exorbitant amounts of money.*

*(Yes, yes I know everyone has the freedom to ascribe value to things as they subjectively determine for themselves. Yes, I know we're on a toy forum and so, in principle at least, one could argue those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. And fair enough. But at the same time... No, no that doesn't disabuse me of my similar right to think and express my feeling that it is profoundly wasteful and foolhardy, and that it represents a nightmarish realization of Baudrillard's Simulation and Simulacra hyperreality coming to life before my eyes. To each their own but that is my stance and it will not change.)
