She used to work on Marvel's youtube channel 10 years ago doing promotional clips.
Now she has her own youtube account where she reviews movies.

She often distorts or exaggerates stuff about various movies and imo it feels like she tries to be contrarian against certain movies just to stir up stuff.

    Well, that was pretty bad.

It has so much going for it: great costumes, some nice cinematography, fatalities, characters that are very accurate to the games in the way they fight. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are awesome. But man, it's crippled by a terrible script. I'd say the script wasn't actually much better than Annihilation's. I'm not talking disappointment in accuracy to the game; I mean judged strictly as a movie script, it has terrible pacing, character writing, and plot development. As someone who used to be a huge MK fan, I feel really let down.

Should you insist on watching it, hopefully I've lowered your expectations enough that you can actually enjoy it.

After watching it....i still have one question regarding Cole.
What is his power? Is it armor? I see at points it glows red like fire but never did show fire powers...

He has the power to make a rip-off of Black Panther's suit appear on his body, and also grow a pair of bladed tonfas for some reason.

I was so hyped to watch this but I'm pissed and let down.
Liu fucking Kang, the main character of atleast the first 3 arcade games gets his ass kicked. Its ilke making a Street Fighter reboot and Ryu is an inept ass fighter!! They made Sonya Blade a better fighter than Kang.
The way they made them all get their powers is beyond stupid.
Mileena never wore a mask to hide her ugly ass teeth.
Cole Young can't fight worth a shit and needs his suit.
Also the beginning fight between Bi Han and Hanzo was very lackluster.
Long live MK95, the best MK live action so far.

It was what it was, I enjoyed the hell out of it and imo checked the boxes it needed to.

    That being said...
Someone please explain to me how mystic tattoo that grants powers of fire and (what I assume with kung lao) powers to teleport, also upgrade mecha arms?
I can even look past the whole cole gets a extremis suit logic, not great but can let it pass, just jax's arms made no sense...

The grips as a whole though are minor and didn't distract from the movie, don't think too much on this movie, enjoy it for what it is and you'll have a blast

As someone who is a big fan of the series, I am pretty mixed on the movie. First, non-spoiler territory.
What I liked the most was the fighting. Finally we see fatalities on the big screen, and man they were gory in all the right ways. Kano was the best character, and the new guy Cole Young, I felt was pretty cool. Still felt they should of had Johnny though. I had a smile on my face the whole time, seeing the characters from the game.
There's also tons of references to the games such as:
Bo' Rai Cho is name dropped, Shinnok's amulet, Argus and Delia made cameos, which can confirm Rain for a sequel? Kitana's fan blade and Shao Kahn appears as a statue. Johnny Cage is at the ending, showing he will be in the sequel. Reptile is called "Syzoth" his real name. And some of the fatalities are based off the game.
    What I did like, spoilers.
The opening scene with Scorpion is badass. Seeing Reiko, Mileena, Kabal, Nitara and Reiko were cool, even if they are strange character choices. Especially Mileena and Kabal. Because Kabal didn't get burned until the third game, and Mileena shouldn't even be born yet. Why didn't they just use Kitana? Plus, the final battle between Scorpion and Sub-Zero was just, perfect. Still wish Ed Boon could of said "Get over here!" Also please let Sub-Zero become Noob...
What I didn't like... spoilers again.
The dragon symbol gives them their power, really? Reptile uses his Deadly Alliance design, not my favorite, but whatever. And the ending was kinda whack. Raiden just sends Shang Tsung away, no epic final battle, if anything, Sub-Zero is the film's main antagonist. Shang Tsung doesn't really do anything besides kill of Kung Lao. Also some of the character deaths were too soon. I know it's Mortal Kombat, and people don't always stay dead, but these characters have potential. The dialouge, isn't good. The cgi looks a little dated at times. But, thank God Cole didn't become the new Scorpion. Though, it was hinted throughout the whole movie for no reason.
Overall, good movie. Though, it doesn't have the cheesy charm of the original or the "so bad it's good" of Annihilation, but be honest guys, we could of gotten worse than Annihilation. If you ever wanted to see a Mortal Kombat adaptation that was faithful to the games fighting and gore wise, you'll love it. If you are a casual fan, you'll enjoy it. If you are hardcore, it's pretty difficult to say. I am a hardcore fan, and I enjoyed it, despite the flaws.
Do I see a sequel, seeing how the movie did decently critically I could see a sequel, hell maybe even a trilogy. Do I see it being a series of films like the MCU, not at all. But, I would like to see spinoff movies with characters like Sub-Zero that is adaptation of mythologies focusing on the Bi-Han Sub-Zero.
If you have some friends and want some dumb mindless action, watch it. But, treat this movie as it's own thing, it isn't a good adaptation. Scorpion's Revenge was better than this, watch that instead.

I really enjoyed this movie. To me, it worked better as a dumb yet fun action movie than Godzilla Vs Kong. The best and worst thing about this movie is that it’s written like a video game. On the one hand, the pacing never lets up. There’s a fight scene at least every ten minutes. However, it’s not the best way to tell a story in a film format as the exposition is super rushed as if they were writing pre-fight cutscenes. The other worst part of the movie is Cole Young. I wasn’t as opposed to the movie focusing on a new character like a lot of people were, but the movie doesn’t even justify why this character exists. His story is just so boring, and the actor just has no chemistry with his family. He has no character arc whatsoever. I could not tell you one thing about his personality, and his arcana doesn’t even make sense for even a minor character arc. We’re told at the beginning of the movie that he only fights offensively and never defensively, so you’d assume his character arc would be about learning defense and protecting others. Not exactly as the movie literally gives him plot armor, and he doesn’t have to change his fighting style at all. There’s also a bait and switch with his character at the end that rendered him even more useless.

The movie makes you think he’s the new Scorpion, but then it just brings the old Scorpion back out of the blue to beat Subzero. Don’t get me wrong, the final fight was really cool, but it really didn’t justify the addition of such an unmemorable new character. His plan to win at the end was basically Fred’s in every episode of Scooby Doo since his idea was to split up.

Sonya Blade or Kano would have made much more sense as main characters. Both of them already act as an audience window anyway, and they were much more entertaining to watch. Speaking of Kano, he was easily the best part of the movie. Everything he said was just pure gold, and you can tell the actor playing him was having a blast. Every single one of his jokes landed, and his fights were among the most entertaining as well. Speaking of fight scenes, they did a really good job with them. Most of them are shot and choreographed fairly well, and it has all the brutality you want from Mortal Kombat (I never liked MK95 personally because I didn’t grow up with it, and Mortal Kombat without the gore isn’t Mortal Kombat to me). Subzero was really badass, and I also liked that they filmed some of his scenes like a slasher movie. There’s dozens of neat references to the games. The finishing moves and lines from the games are ripped right from the games, and some are obvious and a little contrived, but it’s all part of the fun. I thought it set up a sequel very well too.

Hopefully, there is a sequel because everyone has been asking for Johnny Cage, and the ending confirms he’s going to be in the next one. Plus, they didn’t have the tournament in this movie either. That didn’t really bother me since there was so much fighting anyway, but hopefully what they cook up for the tournament is worth the build up

This movie wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t great either. It’s actually annoying how close it is to being a decent film. They set up a big world with lots of potential... and end up snipping out most of it.

Really, really, really salty that Kano and Kabal were killed off. The two characters that were funny to listen to were axed, and Kano died in a dumb ass way imo. Honestly, I’m not a fan of most of the choices for characters to kill.

    Hope so.

Since Kano got stabbed in the eye, maybe they’ll give him an actual robotic eye.

    Disappointing.

Kano was my favorite part. Loved his dialogue and how he delivered it. That's about it.

They even kinda imply that at the end based on what Shang Tsung said and the fact that he took their bodies. Plus, Kano is probably getting his robot eye, and apparently Joe Taslim has a multi-picture deal to play Subzero.

He’ll probably be back as Noob, I feel. Who would they hypothetically get to play the younger brother I wonder? Hypothetically of course.
