Well that's highly dubious. I don't recommend disseminating these factoids about "cheap plastic".
Honestly plastic is the cheapest part of the injection molding process. ABS, POM, and PC is cheap as is. Below that is disposables like HDPE, polyprop, PET, and PVC, but at these volumes you're not cutting costs by changing your plastics (unless you're using really expensive plastics like peek or ultem).
a lot of this perceived quality difference is a matter of properly drying, blend ratio, warming the tool, pressure, cycle time, and design elements like thickness, shape, placement, etc. YES people do fuck it up occasionally. This results in brittle, warped, misshapen, degrading plastics.
If a different plastic is used, it would be to increase function (i.e. flexible components, or frictional components) not to cut costs. Again, they're not making nearly enough parts to save money on commodity like plastic.
If anything, TIME is a huge cost factor. If hands are to be waved and fingers are to be pointed it would make more sense they cut down on drying time, cycle time, qc, or paint apps to increase the yield. Again, not plastic material.
    If the equation is:
    Toy cost = #parts * time (mfg +assembly) * hourly wage
I'm cutting down on time to mfg and assemble, or going to a country with lower hourly wage.
    I'm not buying "cheaper plastics"

S-ABS (Soluated Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) found in some Earthrise, Kingdom and some Studio Series and then the BANE of modern TF toys in M-ABS (Methacrylate Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), the almost see-through lower quality plastic found in Cyberverse, Bumblebee Movie Line and other lower tier toys. M-ABS was used for years in bootlegs in a thinner manner so just imagine.....

MABS is a clear form of ABS with lower impact resistance. Polycarbonate is a stronger clear plastic, but it does not handle hoop stress very well, so it can't be used for components that require pins fired into them. In order to make clear parts, we generally use MABS. We use MABS all the time in medical to create clear housings as regular ABS is opaque.
It's no cheaper than ABS though we may perceive this lower impact resistance as "cheap". If a company wants to produce a toy with any clear components in one shot I can see them reducing the number of molds by shooting the entire thing in MABS. Alternatively, if they want to gang mold parts on an existing mold using MABS, I can see them doing that to make thing easier/ reduce tools. Proper drying is also key for MABS, so without the proper knowhow or controlled facilities the plastic will become brittle.
In either case it's probably improper use of materials/poor design/bad preparation but it's not that Hasbro knowingly goes out and buys "cheap KO plastics".

Sorry about the rant. It's a super pet peeve of mine when people default to "cheap plastic" as a reason for anything. Injection mold grade ABS pellets are controlled materials with certs tested to ASTM D4673 or equivalent. You don't just buy "the cheap stuff" at a company like Hasbro with so many toy lines...

I've still never heard of S-ABS before. Did you mean solvated (not that i would suddenly know what that is lol). Even if it is recycled, ABS is very stable and can be re-melted with almost no loss in properties. Would love to learn more about this. Whatever the material is, its use is probably for a functional reason other than cost.

Well they fixed Megatron's silver helmet at least, so that's nice. Primal is still missing the paint in his robot chest and his blue plastics are both the wrong hue still (one too dark and one too light). Attention to detail is not Hasbro's strong suit.

Hopefully Cheetor and Rattrap end up fine for everyone interested.

Can someone who was actually alive in 96 tell me how accurate that packaging is?

    Ebay:
It is close enough, but with enough obvious differences still that it couldn't possibly be confused with the vintage version.

So I can't buy all I see and put them on eBay as "authentic originals, MISB" for way too much money...?

Huh. Suppose I will have to settle for buying all I see and selling them on eBay as "super hard to find WalMart reissue exclusives, MISB" for way too much money.

    Bummer.

USA BW packaging from 96 wasn't trilingual, that didn't start till RID2001. Other than that it's pretty close

That’s about how I would describe it too. This packaging absolutely captures the aesthetic of the originals. They’re nearly as beautiful too, IMO but different enough...while not having the stupid “VINTAGE” stamp like the recent Starwars stuff did. So that’s all good stuff.

Where they do differ from the vintage pieces is pretty annoying honestly. For example, calling Cheetor and Rattrap “Mega” class on the back is still pretty galling. The inflated size of the Ultra boxes just means more air around the figures (making them look smaller) while taking up more space on a display shelf.

Is the Mutant Mask that important to you? If so, yes. If not, no.

After Beast Wars they should do more reissue's of the RID 2001/Car Robots line because in my opinion that line has some of the best retro Transformers figures that a lot of people missed out on since RID is so underrated. Megatron, Rail Racer, Brawn-X, Prowl and even Sideburn despite It's flaws are all really solid figures that hold up pretty well even today. Even the build team despite their poor excuse of a combined form is still a pretty fun set of figures.
