I personally liked this design for Optimus in RID more.
    Battlegrounds1_Optimus_has_arrived.jpg

But that might be more due to the colour scheme. Always like when some black and/or white is mixed in with Optimus's red and blue.

That may lead me to my next unpopular opinion. I prefer red and black Optimus as opposed to red and blue. (I may have said this before, I forgot if I did)

This was more a downgrade for me. It's basically just Beast Hunter OP adapted for RID15. The first form had a "heroic purity" to it that gets lost here, I think. But the temporary colorscheme is cool.

It's clean, but there's a "generic superhero" laziness to the design that feels kinda stale to me. Much like TF Animated, the stylized art makes many of the RID15 characters look very similar (the poses, arm shapes, face designs, proportions, etc.). To me they look more like humans wearing oversized armour than robots. They're not bad at all-- in fact, I think the production quality of that show is very good-- but they just don't spark my interest.

I gotta disagree there. Animated had very distinct character designs. Much like the Simpsons, you could tell who was who just with their silhouette.

No offense taken or intended, but I'm pretty certain I know my brain better than you do. Perhaps you're speaking of yourself or "people in general", but I've pondered this notion for 35 years and I'm confident I know my perspective on it.

I'm not saying that the stylistic direction or stories would necessarily appeal to everyone, but new characters are new characters. There's no reason to say "that's just not Starscream at all" if it isn't.

This Hotrod stuff is becoming more and more like a crime scene investigation.

See I like the design but for me this looks like it should be a powered up super mode and my brain thinks a smaller "normie" prime should be hidden in the chest. It's just so grand with proportions more similar to Star Saber and Star Convoy.

Now that's not in itself a bad thing but it kinda means he can only come off as stoic.

Because i only consider when it's either stated or shown that he is out of ammo at the moment, otherwise i assume he still has it
Im gonna raise the white flag on this, we're not reaching a consensus on the characters positions so it will be even harder to convince one or the other
So your criteria are only about comparisons ? Im confused

Do you know what they say about assuming
Hey this is all in fun for me so no hard feelings

Although it’s hard to reach a consensus when you haven’t exactly giving me an idea of where you think they were standing......But for my part I’ve analyzed each characters position quite often

I know it sounds like I may have had nothing better to do but to tell you the truth it’s been quite a number of years on dialysis and there really was nothing better to do while sitting in the chair for five hours a day

At one point I even set up a miniature diagram and took the pictures but my old phone got destroyed in the washing machine and I have no plans on doing that again

But honestly I really don’t see how anyone could debate that Optimus was to the right front of Megatron and hot rod was to the back left

And from that position this is what you got

    upload_2021-4-20_20-13-9.jpeg

The circle with the black X is representative of where hot rod was coming from the second red circle is representative of about where he jumped

The 3rd red Circle is Megatron and the last is Optimus

from that angle you can see Optimus is right in the line of fire for anyone coming from Hotrods location

Not a good place to be

Whenever people debate Optimus's death in G1 I just think of this image.

Sorry friend buy I'm not following your line of thinking, either.

What I said was I think completely new characters would provide a clean slate and common ground. If there's no "rehash" of any old characters, then no one will have a preconceived notion of how they should or shouldn't be portrayed/drawn/etc. So while people will undoubtedly have personal criteria and standards about what they want in a show, they won't have criteria and standards about what a particular character should be-- because the characters would be all-new.

My example was if there is no new "Starscream", then there can be no critique of how it compares to a prior version of the character. Some people don't like Dorito Starscream because he's not like G1 Starscream. For others, the benchmark might be Armada Starscream or TFP Starscream. But if there's no Starscream, then there's no comparison to be made.

    Does that make more sense?

    The new Dinobot is garbage.

The tail is too long and too straight, wouldn't mind if the weapons it converts into were at least okay but you get another dinky little sword and what looks like a piece of wood.

The head has no sculpted detail and googly eyes, looks like a muppet. The big floppy hands don't help.

The feet only barely hint at the veloceraptors signature claw. Honestly nothing about this beast mode makes it look like a dinosaur, none the less a raptor.

Robot mode looks like the show model with the squished derpy beast head chest, except his head is too big and his limbs are too thin. He looks anemic.

Only redeeming value is robot mode is articulate.

    The universe version was better.

    Stick to MP.

If you don’t have to sell your lungs to afford one.

Anyways I’m pretty sure that this is an unpopular opinion on this site, I like TFP Optimus prime and megatron.

Prime wars megatron is my favorite version of megatron.

Cyberverse Optimus prime is my favorite and definitive version of the character.

The Optimus prime vs seekers scene in bumblebee is better than the forest battle in Rotf.

Cyberverse hotrod is the best version of hotrod.

The RoTF soundwave design is ugly as hell.

Yeah, that's what I've meant. I was hemming and hawing over giving a little caveat to hint at those "couple" meters being relative, but ultimately laziness prevailed. In hindsight I probably should've at least put meters in quotation marks or typed "steps" instead.

    Probably unpopular opinion:

I think Kingdom Warpath's transfomation is tons of fun. It's fairly unique and you can do it fairly quickly once you have it down. Maybe a little more fiddly than most WfC figures, but still really simple compared to 3P\MP offerings like Badcube Wardog.

For the most part, as there are exceptions, I don't think the bayverse designs are overdesigned. Sure they're covered in detail and alien, but it feels like people are too busy seeing the trees to notice the forest. They have strong silhouettes with the detailing you're supposed to focus on prominent and recognizable.

On the other hand, I find the "G1 but with a bayverse coat of paint" to be overdesigned. They're the G1 designs, typically with wonky proportions and slathered in excessive detailing that clashes with the large slabs of smoother pieces, typically the thighs and biceps. There's no purpose to those excessive detailings, except to try to catch the attention of casual movie fans while still trying to rake in the nostalgia points with G1 fans. Cause as much as the Bay movies deserve to be clowned on, the films do have legitimately good visual storytelling and design philosophy.

If only the actual storytelling was as good.

For the price point, I agree that the engineering is pretty smart. Despite the huge feet and the white trim color, he's a nice CHUG representation of the original, and I like that they gave him a legitimate Earth tank form instead of the divided-tracks style (like Hardhead). The required parts-forming is a letdown, though. It's one of my personal deal-breakers in a design.

There's really no comparison to Badcube. It has one of the most ridiculously over-complex transformations I've messed with. Not fun at all. It's nicely imposing as a robot, though.
