Why did critics like Godzilla vs Kong while bashing Bayformers?

Mutoh mating wasn't shown as jokes though, it's actually being shown as how MUTO is a threat for humanity.

And Ghidorah's name sounding like Gonorrhea? You're literally reaching right now, because Ghidorah is (most likely) an abbreviation of "Hidora" in Japanese, aka Hydra. Because he has multiple heads and can regenerate.

That name is taken from his old appearances, there's no adult jokes here.

It's... okay, I guess? The human plot is as barebone as it can get, but we don't watch movie like this for the plot anyway.

What they really deliver is the Kaijuu fighting scene. You can see how the CGI advanced from Skull Island and KotM. They also choose to fight in a daylight scene (to address complaint from KotM), and you can really see how powerful old Zilla is.

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Thomas Middleditch’s character shows the Senate footage of Mutos having sex. He jokes that he censored their faces but not their genitalia. The same character makes the joke about Ghidorah sounding like gonorrhea. These are jokes in the movie itself.

I was making a comment that Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ reception was similar to Michael Bay’s Transformers movies. This was to show that critics weren’t being selective when it came to giving positive reviews to Godzilla vs Kong and not to Transformers. My most recent comment to cybeast was showing how Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ humor was reminiscent of Bay’s brand of comedy. One sticking point for the negative reception to Bay’s movies were the inappropriate jokes.

I think on average KOTM's fights were worse than what you typically get in the Bay movies. There were a handful of isolated terrific shots / moments, but the fights couldn't go more than 15 seconds without cutting back to humans, and they were absolutely littered with tons of particle effects and debris making them hard to follow. Besides, other than elements of the ROTF final battle, I don't really see the "hard to follow" argument for live action TF battles.

Godzilla vs. Kong did much, much better in this department.

Ah, I forget that part, the same way I forget every toilet scene in any Bay movies :p

    I apologize.

I think it's partially because GvK is more efficient and minimal. The movie gives you exactly what the title promises...Godzilla vs Kong. Pretty much anything else is kept as barebones as possible, and just exists to get to Godzilla and Kong fighting. In a way it feels like a CliffNotes version of a blockbuster. It gets you in and out the door as quickly as possible, and pretty much only gives you what you need. I think even critics who don't care about this sort of movie are probably relieved they don't have to sit though a bunch of extra stuff.

The Transformers movies have a lot of extra baggage and plot. A lot of Sam at college and Cade arguing with his daughter's boyfriend...stuff no one really shows up to see. Which might be forgivable if that stuff was in service of developing fantastic characters, but the characters really aren't much better than the GvK characters. Most of the drama is cliché (how many times have we seen the whole "the father doesn't like the boyfriend" plot in other movies?) Meanwhile the "Transformers" themselves tend to take a backseat to the human drama. I personally think the Transformers movies get too much flak (even TLK), but I also don't think any of them needed to exceed two hours. They could have cut them down to GvK's runtime and made them more focused on the core adventure.

Personally, I hope for a happy medium between the two for future Transformers movies. I actually thought GvK was a bit too efficient. Sure it was nice to not have a lot of boring human drama, but that resulted in characters who felt like cardboard cutouts and lacked any sincerity or heart (aside from maybe the kid's bond with Kong). Whereas Bay's movies have way too much drama.

Because GvK didn't waste the audience time and had good fights.

It was Rhianna in Battleship, not Beyoncé and frankly if they’d let Taylor Kitsch drown and she’d taken over as the protagonist the movie would frankly have been better for it.
