They didn’t use an art style based off the comic, and I already see what looked to be storyline changes. After the last few not sure if I trust them to do the original story justice. I believe there is also already a thread for this The Long Halloween might be happening.
I mean these things aren't meant to be panel for panel translations and fanimation style pretty much sets it in the continuity the last two animated films.
Actually the original DC Direct movies were very close adaptations. Many even tried to use art styles similar to the comic versions. About 5 to 8 years back they started mostly avoiding telling close adaptations and making a major change to the plot of each animated story so they could say it wasn’t a direct adaptation of the original story. Usually so they could avoid paying royalties to the creators of the original stories. It usually had things like including characters that weren’t in the original like Damian Wayne, or making a major change like not making Thomas Elliot Hush and having a very different end than the original story had.
The art style reminds me of of a darker take on the silver age style that the Batman the Brave and the Bold series used. Also it's funny to me that the man who voiced Jason Todd AKA Red Hood in Under the Red Hood now voices Batman who couldn't be any different character wise from the Red Hood but in a good way.
Looks good. I can understand sticking to a more animation friendly design style, but at the risk of being "that guy", I am a little sad they seem to have taken off all that beautiful muscle-mass from Catwoman. That version of Selina looked like she was every bit as physical as Batman.
Great sound design in the trailer. Voice acting is hit or miss, though. The art style is obviously a carryover from that last Superman: Man of Tomorrow animated movie. Maybe they plan to stick with this style for a while.
They don’t have the same plot. They have similarities with Batman solving a serial killer mystery while there is a gang war but at its core The Long Halloween is really about the fall of Harvey Dent. The Dark Knight will probably have more similarities to The Long Halloween than The Batman.
I just saw both part 1 and 2. Very well done imo. It might be my favorite animated Batman movie, and I've seen all of them. I consider the two parts as one single movie. And apparently there is plans to release the two parts together sometime next year. Don't get me wrong... the Kevin Conroy stuff is more comicy fun, and is my childhood. Setting aside my nostalgia glasses, Long Halloween just impressed the hell out of me. The characters never looked better in a cartoon. Gotham itself looked exactly how I would have imagined it to be like. Great action, very mature tone, while not being try hard edge lord grim darky. I have not read the Long Halloween comics. But from what I've read, it is pretty faithful to the books, in terms of plot. They changed some things, and I think mostly benificial. There are some things that I didn't like, and wished were better. Both parts have after-credit scenes.
