I love this Pirmal, but the blue hips bugged me. I knew if I wanted to repaint them, I would need to increase the parts clearance around the joints. To do this, I used a round grinding bit in my Dremel. It was the perfect size, and I was able to enlarge the space where the hi[p joint sits. (This is where having a bunch of random Dremel bits paid off!) Once that was done, I sanded the joint, primed it with a pink acrylic paint, and painted it with Testors Red. It looks a little goopier in the pics that in person, partly because of the focus, but I still might sand it and give it another coat later. For now, it's a tiny bit dark, but I'm pretty happy with how much closer he is to his original look. I also used the Testors on his knees and leg pistons to brighten them up.
Not at all. I only widened the clearance around the upper joint. The stability comes from where the mushroom peg at the bottom is clamped into the leg.
Just tried to take the crotch apart on mine and....nope...it’s not having it at all! Rather than risk breaking it I’m just going to work around the area with the hips still in place. :S
Just standard Tamiya. I've given the parts I'm painting a flat white undercoat - hips, back and arm cannon tips - and mixed up standard red and orange to a decent enough match. I've also painted his feet and the attached 'pistons' gunmetal. Everything is just drying and curing atm. I need to take my not-a-Dremel to the inside of the tops of the thighs next and clear coat the painted bits. Here's where I am right now -
Had a proper nightmare yesterday. Sprayed Testors lacquer on the hips and it melted the paint right off :S Cleaned it up, repainted and used Future instead, which was fine. Trimmed the inside of the thighs down but not wuite enough so when I put them back on they scraped the paint again. le siiiiiiiigh. Re-re-repainted them and will finish him off properly later today. Argh.
Ouch! Personally, I only use acrylic clears coats for this very reason. Krylon makes a good one. Remember to leave at least a foot or two between the can and the part you're spraying and to dust it on in light coats. That lets the spray fall evenly as well as letting the maximum amount of solvent evaporate before it hits the part.
The color match on this is great. Which specific colors did you use? X7 and X6? My Primal has a small chip in the paint on his knee and I've ben considering covering it up once I found the right paints but all my old paint got lost in my move a few years back so I'll need to buy new stuff.
Yeah, X6 and X7. It was a pretty easy mix tbh, didn't take long to match up. I ended up painting his crotch to match his feet too. His bloody left arm cannon snapped off just after I posted these pics in my own Radicons thread :S
