Y'all are right about the price jump, the characterization of an old basic and deluxe as Mega, and a lot of your other objections.

I still bought the shit out of these instantly, though.

Does anyone know about availability of these reissues outside of the United States? Because most countries don't have a Walmart.

Something to keep in mind, there's also been a 64% decrease in the value of a dollar since then due to inflation. $19.99 in 1996 is the same as $33.51 in 2021. Add in that this isn't getting the same production run numbers to keep the costs equal and this run is going to cost more per unit to make. While the $49.99 price is high, it's also not out of no where either.

I'll admit it, they got me for Megatron, since I never got that figure, but I'm passing on the rest. I'd pass on it Megs too were I happier with Kingdom Megatron.

And at least Megatron makes more sense at $50 than G1 brick-mus prime.

Honestly, most of the Transmetals are still great and super show accurate. I would be fine with Transmetal Rattrap, Cheetor and Depth Charge over new versions for example.

I'm really starting to feel that the original Beast Wars Optimus Primal and Megatron molds are right up there with the original Optimus Prime and seeker mold in terms of being released and re-released so many times that I'm betting that most collectors have had them in their collection at some point.

I kinda wish that were more true. I can barely find what I'm looking for in stores, so I basically have to get all of my Transformers online. :/

Thing is, different things shelfwarm in different areas, which apparently is hard for people to comprehend. Unfortunately what’s hard to find for you may always be stocked elsewhere. For example SS rodimus is supposedly really popular and getting bought up quick given the secondary market, but My stores had him for weeks and he never got sold off till I bought him.

Right...something changed in the world that means that industry can no longer achieve what it did in the past. Must be some similar phenomenon to how we no longer have the technology to build the Saturn V rocket that brought the astronauts to the moon in the Apollo era. :D

Oil (raw material) is more expensive than it was in the mid 1990s, labor is more expensive than it was in the 1990s. This is accounted for more or less by inflation. $20 in 1996 equals roughly $34 today. They also already paid for design/R&D most (all?) of the steel molds, even the packaging only needs to be tweaked. On top of this, these will likely be made from SABS plastic which is cheaper than the original superior ABS material.

Best theory; we’re paying for executive salaries which have outpaced inflation wildly. Brian Goldner is making $17.9 million/year. $17.9 MILLION. Anyone want to do the math on how many Botbots they would have to sell to pay for this one clown? Anyone want to know how many years the average Vietnamese kid would have to work in a factory to make that money?

    FUCK the modern “Gilded Age.”

YES! Except that Hasbro isn’t going to invest a dime in quality improvements so the vac metal doesn’t stand a chance of lasting.

    EDIT:
Apologies for all of the cynicism. I love and buy Transformers with reckless abandon. For all of the cheats, price hikes, pitfalls of the modern era, there’s still something wonderful about these toys. They ain’t the same though.

These stupid prices for reissued Beast Wars figures reinforces this idea that the BW era was magical somehow. Even the lamest figures of the line have a unique, intangible quality that the overly referential, formulaic modern figures can’t touch. Seeing Hasbro gouge on the prices for these special figures and mixing that feeling of getting ripped off is just a bitter pill.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I preordered all of the reissues. I still feel slightly better venting about how annoyed I am by the price tags.

Considering it looks like the decos on the new reissues are different from the originals, I don't see it being so unlikely that they would replace the chrome with metallic paint.

Fair point. They likely won’t be identical.
If they are different, best guess is that they spray on metallic paint in lieu of actual “Transmetalization.” That would solve the flaking problem (as a side effect of the cost cutting) and defeat the gimmick too. Those would be reissues that I would pass up gladly.

Yeah, I think a good metallic paint would work fine for the Transmetals, since they weren't super chrome in the show (probably due to limitations of the early CGI tech of course), and even the best chrome is still more delicate than paint would be.

You should consider the 10th anniversary Rattrap. More show accurate colors and the chrome is holding up wonderfully (on my copy at least).
