To be fair though, Beast Wars had a HUGE budget. It was the most expensive cartoon ever made at the time. But yes, there were technological constraints back then and they didn't have a Pixar-level animation department. I still think they did an amazing job with what they had.

why don't they just bring back the armada prime design as nu-rodimus? he's a futuristic truck with smokestack arm cannons and in the show he was even fairly hot-headed and violent, like hot rod in marvel.

the design also makes a really good truck primal. dual arm cannons, monky arms, similar robot feet...

I don't really see how some Transformers being skinny and some being bulky means that they absolutely have gender. Wouldn't it make sense that this robotic species, which is known to have greatly diverse body types, just has some body types which evoke that of a conventional human female? The dialogue having gendered pronouns has always seemed more like a result of translation from a non-gendered alien language to a gendered human one, where there are certain characters who we would see as more masculine/feminine.

What other writers did with IDW Arcee is good, but it just doesn't really feel like Arcee to me, I dunno. Furman's Arcee ESPECIALLY is different from what I envision Arcee to be. I also hate it when people need to make an explanation for gender or romantic relationships. They're anime alien space super robots, man. Get over it.

EDIT: I feel like IDW Arcee aside from Spotlight Arcee would better fit a new character.

Also, IDW Arcee had a better dynamic with Prowl than she did with Aileron, imo. Just saying.

What I mean is that they're designed with bodies that evoke human men and women. I'm not talking about an in-universe explanation for different body types, I'm talking about how they're coded as male and female through the designers giving them body types that look familiar to us.
Sure, but we're never told that. There's never any caveat in any show or comic (that I can think of, correct me if I'm wrong) where they explain that male and female pronouns are the closest human translations for the pronouns (gender neutral or otherwise) they naturally use. I would love that to be the case, but in the text that we're given at face value, the Transformers use gendered pronouns with no explanation for why they do so, and so through this and the body type thing we are led to believe that they have genders.

I believe you may have misunderstood what @Bee427 meant

I don’t think he’s/she’s saying that tfs bring skinny or bulky means that the Absolutely have gender

But that the over the years the different artists has used skinny/bulky bodies at times to differentiate the appearance of tf gender
But that’s a rationalization that something someone picks up at first glance so to speak

Why forgive? I blame them for using expensive technology that looked massively sub-par compared to traditional animation. It’s not like they were forced to go that route. I dislike BW for many reasons, but the animation is unforgivably terrible.

Well in that case I totally agree- yes, they've clearly been coded to be gendered by the writers. I find it funny that Furman's approach to making IDW Transformers genderless later led to gender being a seemingly actual thing, since they had to explain the fact that suddenly there were all these characters appearing from Caminus that had something about them that the Cybertronians didn't. If the classic "female" characters had just simply been there from the start they could have simply said that nobody's really male or female and then gone on with their business.

If the issue of gender ever does come up for whatever reason, I'd like my theory to be the one they go with since it's always been what's made sense to me.

I’d argue that BW’s animation was more ambitious than Pixar, who played it safe and stuck with toys and insects because rendering fleshy characters was tricky. (Remember how big of a deal it was in Shrek that characters like Fiona and Donkey had realistic hair?)

Some characters don't need development as in changing through arcs. Some get away with staying the same because they have presence and their unique perspective is what makes them great. That's something that I think is underappreciated in analysis. Soundwave, for instance, is beloved, despite not truly having a character arc.

Since Unicron Trilogy appreciation has become more and more "mainstream" over the recent years, I wouldn't call this extremely unpopular anymore, but this seems like a proper thread to throw these separate thoughts and statements around. So um, I still think that Energon has one of the best premises for Transformers cartoons. Obviously, the plot does take missteps soon enough, but the overall story premise with the mystery of Alpha Q, rumours around Megatron/Galvatron still being alive affecting the fragile allience... There's a lot of great elements in it, with a nice continuity from the end of Armada, which "Unicron Battles" section was probably the most well-written portion of the show anyway. The returning cast and their characterization, namely Demolishor, Hot Shot and Optimus Prime mixed well with the new cast. Or it would have done so, if the writing didn't drop most of the good elements along the way. I liked how Demolishor was given more depth than in Armada and used rather well to give insight to the "Transformers United" theme. It was cool to see more mature Hot Shot and they had a few things that could've given Optimus more of a character arc as well, but that didn't come across too well, as the focus landed on LOOK WHO I CAN COMBINE WITH! gimmicks.

Bringing Starscream back as a mere slave to Megatron's will, as a symbolic punishment for his unreliability during Armada (which made him one of the best incarnations of the character!) would have been a tragic and relatively good way to excuse his "downgrade" from the Armada version, but the show didn't really touch that matter, unfortunately. Overall, it was very inconsistent on what to pick up from Armada. I mean, it did that rather extensively with, say, Demolishor and few other things and then left some other, very clear connections totally untouched.

It would be interesting to see Armada & Energon Cartoons remade as a two-seson run, with totally revised writing, animation and whatnot. As far as Transformers cartoons go, the story itself is rather good - for a toy commercial anyway!

Ahhh... I'm planning on revisiting this thing in form of a essay or whatever!

I came here after a year or so and this is what I see...

Alright, alright... :p  Seriously, I totally get that and while Furman is responsible for most things I love in Transformers mythos, he's done a few "cringe" things too. Points for occasional quirkiness though, but he has also misfired with it every now and then...
