Rising price and dropping quality.

 

There was a time when the goal of the design for MP figures wasn't toon aesthetic. It was more, hey, this is going to be the ultimate example of what you saw in your head when you were a kid. It was a much more nebulous idea, harder to define, but what was produced was shockingly accurate. It took the aspects of the toon and the toy and childhood dreams and somehow made magic.

Okay, yeah, that's a bit romanticized, but it seemed the way it worked.

Now they have fully embraced the toon look, which is fine, to each their own, but the cost is... just insane. I never collected MP's fully, just picking and choosing characters I wanted, and when I paid $160 or so for MP Soundwave, I felt I was insane. Then they broke the $200 barrier and the $300 barrier and... nope.

I haven't even seriously considered an MP since then.

 

Price, space and the fact that as a Classics collector since 2006, through Hasbro, Takara, the Collector's Club and Third Party, I almost have a complete recreation of the G1 toyline in a modern style, not to mention Beast Wars, Diaclone/Microchange and G2. Just need the rest of the Autobot Targetmasters, Powermasters and I'm pretty much set. With MP, it'll take forever to cover the same scope and breadth of characters and I'm getting too old, wanna stop hunting and settle down   I do use some MP in my display, like the cassettes.

 

Mainly price. I'd love to have Artfire, Star Sabre and the 8 Seekers but I can't justify the prices they go for especially considering the amount of mainline and Selects figures I still want.

None of the cars suit my scale preference.

 

Price, hard toon ascetic, and I prefer CHUG scale.

 

-Size (I don't have a lot of space to display them, so I can have way more CHUG-scale figures)
-Prices (even if I only got KOs)
-My strong dislike for the overly cartoon-accurate aesthetic they've been going with lately
-I wouldn't be able to integrate any of my older figures in with my new collection
-And perhaps the biggest reason: a lot of the characters or designs I want just aren't available as MPs or MP-style 3Ps and probably never will be (like Megatron, Soundwave, and Shockwave figures that turn into vehicles instead of handheld objects, or a Jetfire that's not based solely on his cartoon Skyfire appearance)

 

- decrease price
- increase quality
- make MPs fun again

MP-01 was twice the price of the most expensive TF - maybe $250-$300 today - it had an innovative but fun transformation, solid engineering, great accessories.
With the first MP starscream, they already started messing things up - let's make a realistic jet, forget about the character.

I want more MPs like MP-01. I couldn't care less for the absurd overengineering which goes into replicating a cartoon aesthetic which is best served by non-transformable action figures. Especially when MPs are so overengineered, fiddly and fragile that most people transformer them once per year.

 

I get the G1 stuff. not the beast wars stuff

 

I collect MP's, but things that would deter me are:

1. Quality/QC- Some efforts like Hound were a complete mess, and MP-44 had a bum knee that was ignored. There was no effort by TT for fixes or replacements. At least many 3P companies offer some kind solution for their lemons, but TT sticks their collective heads in the sand for failed product.
2. Choice of Figures produced- TT recently announced Skids. No Cliffjumper, Trailbreaker, Jazz or any of the rest of the Ark bots... but freaking Skids!
3. Price point- Simple car bots go for $150 and anything bigger for $200+. It's outrageous!
4. Repeated versions of repaints, diaclones, +versions and the same characters: Prime, Seekers, Bumblebee, etc.
5. Order of figures produced- There's no rhyme or reason to TT's schedule for new molds. It's like someone reaches in a fishbowl full of random slips for new figures.

 

Toon, price, qc.

I think at this point they should pack up the mp line and use it to make super exclusive characters for our generations collection and other lines, mp cybertron stars team to go in nicely with cybertron line, mp terrasaur to go into the generations and 1996 beast wars shelf, comic characters who can't be placed in mainlines that way they can make top notch toys that fit in with our collection and is priced at 1/4.

Alright pre predicting responses , yes we are getting things like this in the main lines already I'm talking about next lvl, imagine another shot at titian devastator but this time broken into 6 $60 toys that fuse and are much better you know like 3rd party offerings

 

I don't want to buy a figure that's so complicated to transform that I'd never transform it. That beats the entire purpose.

That doesn't even begin to go into the mainline figures that are like that.

 

I have about a dozen MP figures. I love the look and the designs of the MPs but due to their extremely slow releases (I don't collect BW figures), I started years ago to shift to only CHUG. For my Transformers collecting hobby, I get a lot of joy out of watching new reviews of the toys, reading about the rumors & speculation of new upcoming releases, and hunting for new toys in the wild.

 

Theyre expensive and i didnt mind the modern updates that chug was doing since i didnt grow up with g1.
Now with wfc doing "mini mps" i just don't see the point of mps in my collection. I always wanted to get mp 10 but after getting the earthrise optimus i just don't see the point of getting mp10 especially since he doesnt fit my chug scale.

 

1) the fact that they aren't toys and aren't to play with all that much
2) following #1, I'd say that the transformations are way too involved and require too much time to do
3) following #2, the very detailed parts look fairly fragile and then I'm back to #1
4) the esthetics are more cartoonish for the G1 ones and while I do love many of the movies figures and look, those look over the top for the details and back to #1 again.
5) prices... I just can't justify spending that much for figures that are just fancy shelves decorations that I'd I'd be afraid of breakage as just the mainline stuff is already insanely prices to replace such one break.
6) scaling with every other line, and just too large for what I prefer
7) following #6, I'd have to say that the limited number of figures/characters available which keep being redone from one version to the next "bestest and greatest" that just doesn't appeal to me in any way or form.
8) the mainlines are good enough for me and more affordable.

 

they dropped realistic aesthetic for toon. so i stick with 3p now.

Most of them are not very “playable” and they’re starting to take up too much space. Since hasbro has been putting out better product I’m considering selling the bulk of my mp collection.

 

Because I'm a cheap ass.

 

They have never really appealed to me, partly because they just don't seem fun the slow releases, I have bought chug since the early days and it's just what I prefer love all the third party chug offerings too. Plus it's very predictable, asthetic has gotten more and more toon esque which doesn't appeal. Seeing the QC issues and the prices increase has also just helped further solidify my TF collecting choices and preferences.

 

Only got Star Saber because there’s nothing else besides the tiny robot masters one. He’s supposed to be the most playable MP but he isn’t locking and unlocking saber from the v star sucks. Qc is also a problem and I had to fix looseness on a 140+ figure.

Don’t want MP anymore after generations proves it can provide mini mp engineering for 1/3 the price.

 

I'm not out of the Masterpiece line yet, but I've been much less interested for a while now. In general, they really need to up the physical quality of their releases. Both of my MPM-4s ( one Hasbro and one Takara ) can't transform, and I mean really can't. Mine are that bad. After that I've scrutinized their releases closely. MP-36's terribly fragile paint, MPM-8's use of soft plastics, MP-47's complete failure, and MP-44's knees. I'm also less impressed with the engineering on the line recently. Far too many have massive kibble these days. In particular MP-45's backpack, and MPM-10's jet mode. I expect transforming toys of this price to have cleaner modes all around. There are also a lot of competition with third parties these days. I prefer Transform Ellements Optimus and Fans Toys Arcee to the official releases. For the Beast Wars line I really don't like the parts forming that a lot of the figures do. I think Primal, Megatron, and Tigatron are the only releases that don't parts form.

So yeah, they need to up their game all around. I'm still paying attention to the line, but I'm not exited about it anymore.
