If nothing else, this reveal convinced me to revisit SS38 and finally put a pin in that troublesome neck hinge.



(I'm pretty sure it was designed with a pin in mind; the outside of the friction hinge had little faux-pin nubs molded into the sides.)

 

Yeah this is an upsized Studio Series at best. Hopefully it will follow the path of MPM Starscream and immediately discount to $30-40 and then I'd buy it to play with once and chuck it in the toy bin. No way this thing even belongs on the same display as Toyworld.

it's just crazy to see that the MPM's have always had such awesome vehicle modes but this one just looks so bad.

Hmm. Designed by Takashi Kunihiro. This might end up being intuitive to transform and fun to play with(hopefully!).

 

One thing I do not like about this design is the over-detailing on his mouthplate. It just feels unnecessary. In fact I vastly prefer TF1-3 Prime's head to BB Prime's in general.

The Studio Series didn't have this, likely due to being based off concept art.

 

Because Voyager BB Prime (which y’all seem to claim this MP is just an upscaled version of) captured that design to a T?

I’ve already seen your posts regarding the other 3P Primes so I’m already aware of your bias. It’s a decent MP Prime that most folks don’t see a need for because they already got their third party fix.

 

The concept art had the detailing too. I guess they didn't opt to do it on SS-38 as they knew it wouldn't translate as well on a small figure. They probably included it on the MPM so the Bot mode is accurate as possible.

As a side note, I still prefer the BB Prime head as I love how the eyes pop on the model. The faceplate detailing looks really good on the actual CGI model too as it's subtle. Toy designers try to recreate this but since they can't reproduce the faint lines like the model, it looks over done. I don't think I've seen any BB Movie Prime figure that gets this right—including Threezero and this MPM.

 

TW prime’s faceplate is probably the closest well get to an accurate plate without going as large as yolopark or 3A’s larger prime.

 

I still think it's too much on TW Prime. On the CGI model, you can barely see the detailing until you're up close to the model. To replicate that on TW Prime, the details would have to be microscopic so yeah, like you said, it's the closest for a relatively small figure (but still quite off).

 

Cat Truckimus Prime...

I was hoping the cat ears were a simple mistransformation. Seriously, for a MPM class figure, that's just inexcusable.

I mean you could read any one page of the thread and see that most people feel the same way. And "split second appearance" is an exaggeration dude. He's Optimus Prim, so he will sell well regardless, but also he had two major scenes, and was actually a main driver of the overall plot.

I also hope it doesn't look as bad in the end. If not then I might have to cut that piece and install my own hinge or something.

I just realized something. That ToyWorld raid that was reported a bit ago was reported to have been about their Optimus Prime from Bumblebee, and that the CAD files were taken from ToyWorld. And now we have this figure. Hmm…

 

Preorder from RK with shipping to US only cost $144 (PayPal only). Seems like a decent price considering (equivalent to $130 plus tax).
