I think it wasn’t a change made intentionally. It likely had something to do with where the plastic piece could fit on an injection mold, and they had to put it in a blue panel instead of an orange one, and maybe ran out of paint budget and decided the silver and other orange painted accents were more important to keep rather than sacrifice those for an orange maw. So i think it was a budgetary/engineering decision rather than a design one. That’s my personal hypothesis anyways. :p

Totally understand why someone would be upset, and how on a toy of this pricing that budgetary constraints like those shouldn’t be an issue. Personally I’m okay with it, I still think that planet mode looks stunning. But to each their own, I don’t think anyone is wrong here in their opinions.

I'll be honest, I'd buy that Unicron. Who am I kidding, I'd buy any Unicron. I am disappointed about the blue maw because it does break up the color scheme but it's not a deal breaker (plus for those of you complaining about the teeth, they actually look like that in one scene; the design was somewhat inconsistent). Overall, I'm happy with it and I suspect when I witness the sheer size of him, I'm pretty sure all of my disappointments will melt away. Bring it on!

I mean we can cross budget restriction off given this is $600 and they made a massive profit. Its far more believable that its a stronger plastic situation. Still, sorta hope somehow they can actually fix it to the proper color.

Understood. Though I suggest a more passive approach. Less anger, more sarcasm.

    For example:
Hey, neat. You have an opinion on your spending habits. That's marginally economically responsible. In recognition, please accept this image of a can of Gold Star Chili.

I know, it's not much but you're worth it.

With all that rubber, you could use Unicron as a spare just in case your tire blows. It pays for itself!

    That’s totally fair!

I will say, I’m not sure how the economics of scale work in this situation though, given this is both in a mass production pipeline yet is a limited run figure, and I imagine there are other things that go into the cost of the toy like international cargo shipping, since the shipping cost per unit is probably far larger than nearly anything hasbro has shipped before. Stuff like that leads me to believe that there is still a potential of budget constraints even on a figure of this price point, but I could totally be wrong and the answer lies purely in engineering or some other place.

According to some insiders Hasbro & Takara (Yes it's a join venture, the idea was pitched by Kunihiro after all) is actually massively in the red with this project.
Hell someone ended up showing how even the Titans barely broke even.

Absolutely, he just had such presence.

Sorry to hear about that bud. Maybe you’ll get lucky and one will fall into your hands at a reasonable price.

Look at that right there. The ancient look of the stone mixed with the demonic robot mode. What a design.

While I don’t doubt they made a profit, one of the leakers did say they did not make as much as they had hoped on this guy. Just because it was $575 doesn’t mean it was all profit. A lot of that was probably still production and shipping costs.

I can't see that design coherently forming a sphere. Maybe a statue?

I don't know if it's gatekeeping as much as people thinking Zoomers are much younger than we actually are.

Interesting, do you have a source on that? I recall someone "in the know" claiming earlier in the thread that their profit margin was around 20% for the first 8000 units and then 80% beyond that, and they ended up selling 10,000+ which should have them at a nearly $2mil profit. Is it just because of covid hurting production?

Well he did form a planet, it's just that it was an actual planet with mountains and what not on top and part of his robot planet form. And then he grew bigger with the mass of each planet he ate, so that may make it seem like that.

I wonder if the Sesame Street crowd would have had some significant debate had Cookie Monster been produced.

"Yes but his prototype showed his fur having more red in it to make him almost a purple. But now we see in the promotional campaign image an almost green hue. Neither of which represent this particular image from the show..."

And then there's all this nonsense.

"And don't even get me started on how the eyes aren't googly enough! Those poor sweatshop workers! Glad I only bought one so they didn't have to slave over making two for me during these troubled times. And besides, the knock off I bought at the state fair last month is way better. Only cost me $200.00 at the ring toss."

Ah yes I see what you mean.

Unless you're being sarcastic and referencing Cell, which has triangular panels, and tbh the Planet mode on that is a compromise. The best thing about this one WAS the working maw.

I'm more inclined to believe that they really aren't making money on this guy. Too many people see HasLab and it being crowd funded as meaning "the sky's the limit!" for the budget, when no, it most certainly is not.

Yes, a 13 billion dollar company decided let’s make stuff out of the kindness of our hearts for this small group of people instead of make money.
