Ah, the cliche sad/tired shower scene. It does look boring. And, not going to lie, the moment he said his name was Noa, my head went another direction, and was immediately disappointed from then on out: Spoiler Yea, you're right brain, Noa Izumi would make a better Gundam protagonist than Noa Hathaway. I'm sure it's better than the trailer made it out to be. But, this Gundam looks so cliche/melodramatic, it might actually be fun, but not for the reasons it wants to be.
It's based on a novel that's been around, what -- 30 years? It's going to be as exciting or as boring as the novel was, depending what you want out of a Gundam story. I don't know what you guys want out of it. Do any of you not already know the ending?? I guess I'm in the minority here, but I'm looking forward to this a lot more than most of the stuff that's been released in recent years. An actual legit continuation of the original story.
A trilogy is a good idea, because it's going to take at least 2 1/2 movies to get people to stop hating Hathaway and make him halfway likeable.
I am almost curious to see how they try to envelope some of the material written after the original novel into the film. You have to think that they might shoehorn some elements in from UC/NT. Say for instance mentioning the "Singularity One" incident, because that would also tie back into the novel; where the more corrupt leaders of the Federation scheme to get rid of Captain Bright. Even so far to maybe making simple references, MAFTY members likely be mentioned as remnants of the Sleeves or even the Mineva Faction, and of course trying to bury the Newtype myth for another 20+ years.
Okay, you guys are making it sound way better than the trailer makes it look. Having not even heard of the novel, I just went based on what I saw in the trailer. Which doesn't seem to be doing the film/story justice. But, thanks for clearing things up for me. If it really is what you guys are describing, I will happily check it out.
Shiro had some of the biggest balls of any UC pilot. It's one thing to kick ass in a state-of-the-art super weapon, it's another thing entirely to go G Gundam on enemy suits in a clunky tank MS that's fanciest armament is a bog-standard beam rifle.
Yea, I really like MS 8th Team. The only Gundam series I actually own. Great show, loved the characters, and Gundam designs. Made me love it doubly so, since I watched it after playing Gundam Side Story on Dreamcast. Which was a very similar premise. Ah, great times Toonami/Adult Swim provided back in the day. It's my ideal Gundam show. (Although, I'm not a huge Gundam fan.)
It's certainly my favorite Gundam show based on the setting and perspective if not entirely on the execution. Not that the execution is bad, it's just... the second half of the series holds it back for me with the whole love story sublot between Shiro and Aina, not to mention the Final episode being an utter waste of time. Still I like the direction of seeing regular frontline MS pilots not related to the overall narrative of Newtypes and the grandure of humanity evolving in space. Gundam was considered the father of the "Real Robot" mecha genre, and seeing that exemplified by having Gundams that aren't over-speced prototypes piloted by newtypes, or the given universe's resident newtype equivalent, is an enjoyable and refreshing step sideways. It pains me sometimes that said side steps are always only ever relegated to manga, novels, and video games too, because I would absolutely love to see things like Blue Destiny and Zeonic Front in full animated format.
It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I recall liking all the things you've mentioned. I too, think it's nice to just see standard regular soldiers fighting other standard, regular soldiers. It was super neat. I loved the whole thing. Now, I have some of the Gundam movies, and I've recorded the majority of the Gundam shows on around that time on VHS, but MS 8th Team remains the only Gundam show I've spent money on. Definitely love it. Not saying it's perfect, just saying I love it as is.
I agree. The original showrunner passing away noticeably lead to an understandable tonal shift, but yeah I did find Shiro and Aina's relationship overbearing. I don't even dislike the idea of it, but it felt too Romeo and Juliet. Still, the whole fight against Norris Packard. Fucking legendary.
TBH I might have enjoyed it a bit more if it ended the same way... tragic or not it would still feel more down to earth than to have them survive the exploding mountain with Shiro loosing his leg for the trouble. Although... thinking forward, perhaps the tragedy is where they ended up living by the end, assuming they continued to live there all the way into 0093.
That's the thing we all agree on and like about some of the OYW era Side Stories where there were no Newtypes. The normal pilots having fatiguing battles that nobody walked away from unscathed. 08th Team; Shiro, in desperation to escape and survive, going so far as to ripping his own Gundam's arm off and beating Norris's Gouf with it. The Ramba Ral Medal goes to Norris himself because he knew he wouldn't survive the encounter, did it so the hospital ship could escape (albeit failed), and using guerilla warfare tactics where the 08th Team are the ones who literally push him in the direction of the Guntanks they were defending. Even wasting his own ammunition to create a smokescreen was a brazen tactic and he still completed his mission even at the cost of his own life. 0080; Bernie in the ultimate losing battle, using parade floats as decoys and the remaining smoke grenades to get close enough to a Newtype Use Gundam with his only weapon being a standard issue heathawk. 0083; Just about every fight Kou was in, he underperformed and got savagely beaten mentally and physically, though the standout fight I'm thinking about is his second battle with Gato in space where he's doing everything he can to win against an Ace, such as blocking a beam saber strike with the GP01's foot.
I'm just amused the local Philippine Fast food Jollibee has a cameo on Hathaway's flash, they even got the food packaging look correct. The bottled water looks like Summit water which is common here also. And that outdoor shot is totally believable to be set locally as well haha taken from 『機動戦士ガンダム 閃光のハサウェイ』公式サイト
Not yet. Its release I think was maybe the middle of the Year but thanks to covid, may end up like Eva 4.0 and be delayed, or stream like US movies are doing. There's something about the backgrounds, the level of fidelity and detail compared to the character models that just looks so striking. So much attention to detail.
