get contracted by a major movie company that's in charge of a major movie franchise of a hugely successful toy line with tons of merchandising potential that will now doubt be seen by other directors and movie companies. so the smart move would be to intentionally self sabotage yourself, your career, and future by turning in a project you hope gets passed on. that's some 4d chess shit right there.

 

I don't think you know what concept means, also this one is further along than a sketch. If the Bayverse didn't exist, maybe there would be no reason for the outrage, but clearly with the direction they took Starscream, Ironhide etc these designs were probable. So yes they are still insulting.

 

You have to remember that Transformers fans are pretty much balls deep in their feelings. Anything they don’t like they perceive to be an “insult”.

 

WOW, thats and awesome dumpster fire... Lets hope this crap never gets made. I'd rather not have BW than have this bastardized hot garbage floating around. Concept or not, who ever thought this was a good idea needs to be stung up by "the short hairs"

other that a semi feline form, this is not recognizable as cheetor.... not even close. its even more extreme of a miss than Bay's movies. At least the Bee movie kept enough nuance to make the characters recognizable. This is closer to a mecha back panther

 

Dude I haven't been into PR since the third grade when it was still "Fresh." But if anything got me back in, it would be THAT.

That's kinda how I feel about BW. Loved it, still do, my kids have seen it and yeah the animation is a bit hokey compared to some of the stuff out there now (emphasis on BIT -- to me it's still beautiful) and they still like it for the great storytelling. They don't see it as an artifact of a bygone era, just a different medium of great writing.

The more I see this concept art the more I think the artist had no idea what a cheetor was, or was given really shitty direction on what to draw.

If 10 years ago-studio wanted to tug at nostalgic heartstrings, this would have been a fail. If the intent was to capture a new child audience, there's nothing anthropologically relatable about the robot head design so again, failure.

But if rob_base_dude was given clear direction to capture the essence of the character design, accounting for believable alt mode and tween-friendly humanoid mode, then I think it would look a lot different today.

As long as it's not another "Star Kid" abomination, LOL!

Except it really isn't. We're seeing a lot of 3D concepts these days with the ease and availability of 3D programs, so many concepts begin life in three dimensions instead of traditional digital paintings.

Why? The only reason this concept exists is because it was aping the Bay style. Wouldn't this be worse, since it means the artist came up with it in a vacuum instead of trying to match a pre-existing aesthetic?

No, they are not, no matter how much you stomp your feet.

Anyone who considers these an "insult" or wants the artist killed/maimed/shamed/flogged is a child. For God's sake listen to yourselves.

This thread just reminded me of something. The "knightverse" designs that (almost) everyone likes now are very similar to the Don Figueroa idw designs that got so much unecessary hate several years ago.

 

I was never a fan of the Beast Wars. But the design looks nice.

 

I love those designs, Kind of wish we got them over the new ones really.

It's just the complete disregard for the characters and the property is what's gets me. Zero faith in the material

 

They had a realistic mechanical vibe to them that looked familiar enough but alien at the same time

 

I didn't wish harm to the artist. But I stand by the rest. So frustrating, in this age where movies respect the fiction -to great success, to continue to hear this nonsense.

The guy had a hand in making five, 3-hour long car commercials with intermissions of incomprehensible drivel between explosions. BW needs to develop organically, given time to grow. Fur.

 

The designs were fantastic, I just wish they had unique faces. It's so distracting to have the lithe, youthful Hot Rod, the chubby happy Bumblebee, and the old grizzled Ironhide all have the same exact face.

 

Here me out: bring back Micheal Bay ; he can make a 3 hour animal commercial. People will want to buy so many animals. (GM, Hasbro, pet shop owners; you know where to find me)

 

Well I guess now we have some idea what to expect. Same as what bay did with the Transformers movies that were very loosely based off G1.

Gotta say, I was really hoping for realistic CGI animals, dinosaurs, and huge bugs that turned into robots with at least some resemblance to the excellent characters I loved from BW, even if they greatly changed up the story and how their voices sounded.
I know this was an early design, so maybe this entire design direction will be totally scrapped in favor of realistic beasts... Fingers crossed.

this VASTLY predates any work on the actual Beast Wars movie, and is unrelated to it. The concept is from somewhere between 2011-2016, before they were even planning on a Beast Wars movie the way they are now, and the Beast Wars movie isn't even in preproduction yet

 

I'm just glad its the last time you'll repeat that, finally. Now maybe we can speculate in peace.

 

I hope someone does a video biography of Micheal Bay but casts Ridley from Metroid to play Micheal himself, that should balance the force. Then when folks who know him say he's unrecognizable in his video biography I'll make fun of their memories and call them names.
