I've not been happy with any of the megatrons (except the cool looking masterpiece). I tried the 3d printed megatron too, but still wasn't happy. Decided to start modifying my Earthrise Megatron.

First thing I did was remove his backpack.


Next I painted the lights on front, his sides, and went all the way around on his elbows.

Americana Paint
Red - Primary Red
Light Blue - Turquoise Blue

Apple Barrel
Yellow - King's Gold



I started playing around in Meshmixer to create a back panel that includes the gun barrel.



The first iteration was ok, but I decided I wanted to remove the piece that holds the arms and incorporate that into the new back.

I just kicked off a print job so we'll see how it goes.

Interesting. If the plan is to go for a fully accurate robot mode, maybe you could incorporate some sort of a base or computer terminal half-mode.

 

Hell yeah, having no back barrel was my main beef with ER Megs. Fig'd they wouldve gave him one by that point since it was all about G1 accuracy. Atleast the RED version got it right.

 

Progress!

I'm on my third iteration, and posting pics. I removed the gun barrel since I shave about an hour of printing time off for prototyping. Once I have the back where I want it I'll add it back in.

There are some gaps I want to fill in a little better, and I did manage to slot in the 2 little areas pretty well.

 

Simply astounding. Damn, so cool!

Believe it or not, I'm just using meshmixer. I'm pretty good with it but I know I'd be able to do more cool stuff if I used fusion...

 

Ok, next iteration. I matched the shape from the front on the back so it's a bit more symmetrical from the side profile. I also moved the bottom piece in a little but I need to move it in a little closer to eliminate the gap.



I also added a hole in the peg so I can utilize the screw from the old backpack, and I'll have the gun barrel and kibble on the back slot into the hole with a matching peg.

 

Ok, just a few minor tweaks, but pretty happy with how he is looking. He's pictured with a 3D printed fusion cannon found here:

I have a test print for a cover that will cover over his side tank treads, that's next.

are these parts gonna go for sale at all?

 

Yes. All of the stuff I've done up to now has been on thingiverse but this has taken me a lot of work so I'll probably throw it up on cults for a few bucks.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I was hoping one of the talented guys or gals on here would have done something like this (and I'm sure it would have taken them less time) but I was really interested in seeing a better G1-esque Megs.

Since you've already got this far, I think you can make a gun mode to this amazing figure if you rework the arms and legs and also did I mention this looks a whole lot better than earthrise megs? But being serious this is awesome,keep up the good work

IMO the back cannon looks a tad large, but otherwise this is great work all around.
