ShowZ doesn't wait for official solicitations. They just put up provisional pre-order pages the moment they catch a whiff of something.

 

Arcee artwork looks great!

 

It looks like, 80% re-use of Windblade's parts. If you recolor Arcee into Windblade's colors, or vice-versa, it'll be much more apparent. So many tiny details are identical. Same body, different head, shoulders, chestplate, and backpack. That's about it.

You compare the two linearts side-by-side, and you can tell that none of the details or shapes are shared 1:1. There's definitely similarities, due to the artist's style, but it's not just Windblade with a new backpack and helmet.

 

Full disclosure: Not getting this as already have the MP Arcee but nope, different body details though of course, same artist same style. Will be getting Windblade of course.

When it comes to IP licensing, this is what is known as a "non-compete" clause. Often, the first party will place certain stipulations on their brand and trademark usage, in order to create some clear distinction between the products in question. The end goal is to make it utterly impossible for the licensee to somehow muscle the licensee out of their own IP. This is ultimately unlikely for a large firm like Hasbro. But say a small up-and-coming brand develops a new and exciting product, and then some other company says "hey, can we borrow your idea? We'll pay you a license fee, etc, etc" but then under that agreement, they make a similar product but better and push the original company out of business. That's the general idea behind the clause, and should be pretty standard-issue in IP law.

Exceptions can be made for the transforming Bear Bricks and Sen-Ti-Nel pens, when the novelty value of such items is obvious and there's no direct competition with HasTak product.

 

I honestly had no idea about all this stuff regarding IP law and so forth, so that's interesting.

 

Are there limits on which characters they can do, or do they have free reign to do anything from any previous toy range, tv show or comic? I've often wondered how Flametoys decides which characters to make. At the risk of being labelled a noob, I didn't really know anything about Tarn before they released him and now I'm a big fan.

 

I wouldn't know the specifics of that without actually seeing the contract. But it's doubtful there'd be many restrictions placed on that, unless there's characters that HasTak themselves don't want to use for some specific reason. FlameToys is probably just angling for the coolness factor above all else. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind their release order.

 

Now I wonder if Blackarachnia will be on the way in the near future since the artist has done art of her before too.

Arcee looks cool and has a certain IDW feel to her. Hope we keep getting females every other release. Hope next is Aileron or RB Whirl.
