It's not even strictly a manga thing, Western artists such as Jim Lee, Mark Bagley, Todd McFarlane or Amanda Conner can be pretty sameface-y as well. It just comes with having to provide multiple pages on a tight schedule, after a while you just can't be bogged down with making sure everyone has a sightly different nose shape. That and many of the better sameface-y artists also tend to have extremely distinct art styles you can recognize from miles away.

Transformers have always been very sameface-y. Look at any of the renowned IDW TF artists like Milne, Roche, Durocher, Guidi or even Zama and you'll notice they have like 3-4 variations they reuse for every "human-faced" transformer (attractive young male\female, older guy, rugged dood etc). Unless they're wearing face masks or have very atypical faces (Shockwave, most of the Beast Wars\Animated guys), it's a TF's color scheme, silhouette and other various accessories (visors, kibble placement, helmet\armor detail) that make them unique. It's less that the concept artist can't draw different faces and more that he's sticking to the IDW TF style these figures are based on.

Like, imagine if someone would take this piece of lovely Durocher art, take away all the color and armor, gave them some generic human body outline and you had to tell apart the fembots just by their faces. I don't think you'd have an easy time.

 

Arcee looks fantastic. She'll look great next to Windblade.

 

Hard to really say how interested I am until Windblade is out but if the art is representative then it is looking good for Arcee. Hopefully she doesn't take as long to release.

 

Arcee looks cool. I love what Flame Toys has been doing with the manga-styled Transformers, kinda makes me want a full on TF anime.

 

Repaint her as Strika.

 

It looks... fine? I mean it certainly looks like G1 Arcee. Like MP Arcee. Like Earthrise Arcee. It's not bad but it makes me really wish more creativity was in this one like the first Windblade design. The komono/butterfly wings were a cool design trait that helped her stand out. But no, gotta have generic wings because otherwise people wont recognize her. Maybe its just me. Rant - over

I don't understand why people are angry or even surprised by this. This is a figure made by a Japanese company for a Japanese audience primarily. We all know Japan loves their cheesecake anime girl figures and that's who this Arcee and Windblade are made for....Japan

Us Americans complaining about it won't change it or Japanese culture.

I kinda feel like if you aren't a fan of this instead of raging about it just don't buy it. This isn't really made for America standards or cultural sensibilities. I find this quite tame compared to most anime girl figures. Flame Toys is giving Japan what they want. Cool mecha dudes and cheesecake women.. Just as it's been there for decades.

Look up some Japanese mecha female model kits and this Arcee and Windblade fall right in line with those

 

I feel like hasbro made them give her the classic wings because of the backlash. I don't think they wanted to take a risk with Arcee.

 

I... don't see anyone actually complaining about the sexiness (so far). Why are we starting arguments over nothing? Please just give it a rest, no one cares about your holier than thou pre-emptive soapbox speechs.

I think this concept art looks awesome and should turn out the best looking bot mode arcee figure that ever existed (even if it doesn't transform). This and Windblade would be total eye candy on any shelf i reckon.

 

This. God, this. People have to understand this is made for a Japanese audience. I don't have a problem with it. Hell, I would like it if some more creativity or redesigning were put into it. As long as it looks cool or looks cute, I don't really care. I like this art because it got the point across. It's a cute, anime girl Arcee, and I like it.

 

A big plus side of them also being models... plenty of room for customization, the same could be said for any of these model kits.

 

Oh whoops I didn't see this was in the model kit line for flametoys. Right, customization options definitely there, plus hopefully this makes it a lot more affordable for someone who doesn't want to spend the kura kurai whatever (lol) money of 500 CAD. This just became a very likely purchase.

 

I'm sorry, I gotta gush about how much I love the aesthetic. Humanization aside, I really like what they went for with the whole anime girl thing. It's cute, it works, I absolutely love it. That paired with the totally badass anime designs for their other kits, I would love to see a full-on TF anime.
