3D Printed MTMTE Cyclonus Cyclonus' files are now available here on CULTS3D: Download STL file Transforming 'LAVENDER' Figure • 3D printer template ・ Cults Also took some time to create an assembly instruction booklet. Inspired by myloschz’s Whirl figure, I set off to design a new MTMTE Cyclonus to try and reach a fraction of the accuracy that Whirl figure achieved. I’ve always wanted to do a Cyclonus again, after building one from the skeletons of POTP Starscream and building the Cyclonus pieces with Styrene a few years ago, it’s time for me to give it another go. I’m currently on Day 2 of modelling him and have his upper body all figured out. One more day on the legs and he should be complete. I’ve added all the articulation I think would make him the best out of my projects, the parts count on his arms only are already more than the number of parts in my old Whirl figure. This added articulation allows him to hold his sword with both hands, which I’m very happy with. Here is the alt mode so far, his arm transformation is a combination of the new Kingdom figure (referenced off reviews) and the old Classics Cyclonus. The nosecone opens and sandwiches his head, after folding down his horns. I’ll need to find a sturdier way to model the horns, they feel a little scary at the moment. I’ve designed the sword as a thicker piece so it’ll survive longer. His sheath pegs in onto his back, although that peg hole will need to be made deeper for future prints. He’ll stand at 14-15 cm tall and will scale nicely with my newly printed Whirl, who’s actually printed at a 90% scale. I will scale up this Cyclonus tough, for the sake of the pin walls. I’ve always had the intention of going back and fixing up that Tailgate, now Cyclonus is on his way, this might be the motivation for me to do it. I’m excited to complete him, this whole process so far has been sorely missed after designing G1 styled figures. Adding rotations to joints and seeing them work is such a joy. As always I’d love to hear what you guys think, comments are always welcome. Thanks for reading!
Still have to do the hip skirts. (Rotates up to over exposed torso) Will need a new batch of resin. He’ll look slimmer in hand, and the hip skirts will help with the ‘samurai’ look. Might do a new head sculpt with scratches along his face.
Cool. Reminds me of Energon Sharkticon. Hip skirt engineering sounds pretty solid. IDW Star Saber Retool down the road?
Huh. Sounds interesting. But the only exposure I have of Star Saber is from one of the final issues of Lost Light. I see that his alt mode is quite similar to what I have with Cyclonus now, but robot mode needs more work. Don’t see myself doing a Star Saber, just trying to complete the cast of MTMTE. Who is see being a retool of this Cyclonus is, however, Riptide. I’ve always wanted to do one.
Totally awesome design and print. Congrats. Would you mind sharing the type of resin you’re using? I’m working on a project and I haven’t done resin before. So, I need materials that’ll be sturdy enough for the task at hand.
Hi! Thanks. I’m using the Anycubic Resin, grey at the moment but tragedy struck when I went to reorder some off amazon, the grey was out of stock so half of Cyclonus will be in black. A quicker printing time I guess. Anyways this resin is fairly strong for large pieces but for hinges or thin pieces you’ll need to have a few hands on experiences to learn the true limitations and work around them. I’d suggest looking at Myloschz’s recent Whirl thread, where I think he talks more about a tougher resin which would be more ideal for toys.
Three interchangeable heads, hip skirts done. Resin coming in on Monday, all set to go! Any suggestions for other accessories for Cyclonus?
Amazing! Those ears look DANGEROUS. Maybe a piece that maintains the thickness all the way to the base and then is balljointed into the helmet? It would definitely be sturdier even if it pops out easily, but I know nothing about 3D printing and it might eat up too much of the helmet silhouette anyway. This is crazy good work. Can't wait to see it finished.
i know it isn't canon to MTMTE/LL, but what about an IDW Styled Nightstick/Krunix? (i know Krunix is Scourge's headmaster in the G1 comics (according to TFWiki), but i personally call Nightstick Krunix. mainly because of SG)
The horns are an issue that I had fixed last night. Flipping down the horns are part of the transformation process so there is already some sort of flexibility in the piece. I have thickened the base joint so it should be the stablest. That way I still retain the silhouette and the horns.
Interesting idea and I know you mentioned it’s not part of the MTMTE continuity but I don’t see this version of MTMTE Cyclonus with a gun. I’d love to do another alternate head sculpt when half his face is broken and you see the internal skeleton of him. I don’t think he opens one of the matrixes at the end of LL, think he was protecting Tailgate when he opens one so don’t think a Matrix would be a good one for him. Maybe a small Tailgate non transforming figure with the basic 5 point articulation would go well as an assessory.
