Baby Boomers are the generation born after World War II, after returning soldiers got married and the amount of children born skyrocketed. It was a “Baby Boom”, and thus Boomers.

You know... one thing that always gets me when these generational conversations come up is that you always end up with people acting like everyone in each generation is the same when that couldn't be farther from the truth. Also, the whole "which generation are you a part of" issue becomes pretty arbitrary because it's not really cut and dry. Because while someone like myself who was born in 1981 may be considered a Millenial (1980 - 1999 technically), I personally would identify more with Gen X if you were to ask my stance on a lot of topics. Also, outside of the census bureau actually tracking the Baby Boomers the rest of the generations are made up and separated by the media using a roughly twenty-year cycle and are really only utilized by the media to refer to different age groups born between x and y years... well I won't say much more but that alone should give you a picture of what is really trying to be accomplished with the whole generations issue.

I get this whole covid/vaccine stuff, but is the mail seeming to be.....craaaazy slow to anyone else? Now it’s letters too. I’ve got some stuff several weeks past due. I can’t say I’ve ever seen it this slow before.

I mean, you've got more people shopping online than usual this year already due to covid and then you add the Christmas shopping season to that. Mail is going to slow down, unfortunately. I've had the same issue since the end of November. Though how bad it probably depends on your area. For me, nothing has been more than maybe three to four days late, but I also live right outside one of the major cities in Florida.

There's a new Postmaster General this year named Louis Dejoy and my dad who works in the Post Office has been complaining about all the changes he made so I'm pretty sure that's your problem.

Thanks to him I’ve had packages I sold to people get lost, they not insure me all it’s worth, and result in me paying more then I earned on top of what was lost.

Theres a T30 Metroplex out there in a box, somewhere, that was probably destroyed or thrown away.

I've had two packages not update in ten days, with no package in sight. Even my electric bill was something like five or so days late this month.

I'm of the opinion that kids under a certain age probably should not have full access to smart phones, tablets, or ipads until they are of an age where they are less likely to break it, and are old enough to understand and handle responsibilties and consequences.

I mean, its alright if you've got it for them to watch a movie while driving for hours or are waiting during a boring errand or at the office or something.

But if your kid sees something you don't want them to, or they spend your money, or bust your expensive ass device, that's on the parent.

Of course, this sort of thing varies from kid to kid. Some are more thoughtful. Others are little shits.

I was allowed to use YouTube to watch videos to keep me entertained below a certain age, but only in the last few years have I been allowed to use social media, and for that....I am eternally grateful.

Letting a smartphone raise a kid is child neglect, I feel. I think most parents get that thankfully. But a few don't which is sad as f*ck.

Agreed. This is pretty much how we've been with our kids. My son is 14 and has a cheaper smart phone. It's not as nice as what his mom and I have, but it does what it needs to do. We didn't start letting him have one until he was 12 or so. Before that he had one of those cheap flip phones you can buy at Wal-Mart or Target for emergencies.

My daughter is 11 and she only has a cheapy flip phome for emergencies right now. We are discussing her getting her brother's as a hand me down since my wife and I are replacing our phones in February and he's getting mine. I figure a hand me down phone is a good way to test if she's ready.

Both of their online activities are highly monitored by us as well. We try to be observant without being overbearing. I mean, we even monitor what stuff our youngest watches on YouTube. Not everything on YouTube is kid friendly.

Yeah, we omly recently allowed our son, 14, on social media and it was with the caveat that his grades stay good and he doesn't get into crap he shouldn't online. My daughter, 11, only has access to YouTube and other kid friendly places like Animal Jam for now... and even on places like Animal Jam you have to watch out because they recently had a rash of adults going on what is obviously a childrens site and trying to "get friendly" with the kids on there.

It's basically the modern version of letting tv raise your kids. I remember hearing about other kids growing up whose parents would just set them in front of the tv all day and never really interact with them. This is pretty much the same thing.

I could give you an amazing tip on an amazing way I figured out how to get around parental restrictions as a teenager(which were set by an Uncle I hardly ever saw. Not even my parents. Asshole.) But my family never accepted me for who I was in any fashion, and being able to be myself online was very freeing.

That said, my parents told me they had been monitoring all my online activity for years on my 17th birthday, and confronted me with hundreds of posts I had made here where I would go rant about how un-accepted I felt, including religious conflictions I had at the time that I didn’t want my parents to know.

I had never felt so betrayed in my entire life. I grew up in a small southern town where everybody is CUNTRY, and I never felt like I fit in. My parents thought I was a weirdo and that nobody actually collected action figures and that it was just me. They thought there was something wrong with me, literally. A few years prior my Mother had attempted suicide, and after returning from “rehabilitation” promptly disowned me for about a solid year. This place was the only place I could go to for many years where there were other people like me, where I could feel like I could be both accepted, and myself.

When they presented me(or rather ganged up on me to put me down) with all those posts revealed I had never had any sliver of fucking privacy, it was like when my Mom left me all over again. I had no friends, I had nobody to talk to. I felt unwelcomed in my own home by the very people who were supposed to support me(but just looked at me like a disappointment instead.) I had lost the only place I felt I could be free.

And you know what? It drove me insane. After all the years of abuse from my mother, the disapproval of my other family, and being trapped in a tiny southern town, I lost it. I started talking to myself because I had no one else and I never had a place to let any of my frustrations go, and now I can never stop talking. I hate it. It was around six years ago but I will never forgive them for it.

That's really rough man. Honestly, though, we don't use parental controls. If I had to do that then I'd suck ass as a parent. We've always promoted open communication with our kids and they know what is expected of them. We only monitor and limit their online activity to make sure they aren't going places they shouldn't or interacting with people they shouldn't. I mean... my eleven-year-old daughter really has any business going to a site like PornHub right? Not to mention grooming is a thing that happens so we do insist on knowing who their friends are. Online and in real life. That said we don't invade their privacy either. We just want to know what's going on as responsible parents. Like I said; observant, but not overbearing. It's a balancing act of making sure you're giving them enough privacy and showing that you trust them, but knowing enough of what's going on with them so that don't end up in a bad way. They also have to be allowed to fuck up from time too since experience is the best teacher, but hopefully keeping an eye on their activities can alleviate any fuck ups that would be physically or psychologically damaging.
