In your lighting this is the best I've seen this figure look. It looks more grey than tan and the dirt looks nice.

Maverick arrived over the weekend and I was initially not impressed. Did some panel lining and detailing today and am much happier with it - although I still don't think that it's worth $60 as it is out of the box. If I wasn't such a big fan of the Tomcat, I probably would have passed after seeing the bland final paint job (or lack of). After a little work though, I'm glad I got it.

 

So we all agree this dude's a pretool for a G1 toy accurate Jetfire...right? Like, Takara has an agreement in the barrel and in the next 6 months or so is going to reveal the reason this mold was available for Paramount to do the Top Gun crossover.

 

I seriously hope so. They could get a lot of use out of the mold that way, because from the Jetfire remold they could make various G2 Cyberjets (ideally with new heads) as well as a black and purple 'Dark Skyfire' repaint.

 

Brainstorm!!!!!! They need to make this with:
-Better quality plastic
-GI Joe Sky Striker deco
-The head should be Ace or Duke

Id buy 3 of these!

I'm getting a huge kick out of the clear valk inspiration for this toy. Looks great with the 1/72 Kitzconcept one:

I'm really enjoying this guy. I didn't go into it expecting a transformers toy, but instead a neat cheap Macross VF-1 variant and I'm not disappointed. The swappable hands and the amount of detail is great. I plan on repainting him later on so the shitty base color isn't a problem.

These are most excellent! The details realy look good in that sunlight.

I just received mine this week. 91% for me. And the plastic is strong as hell so no fear of destroying it a la clear plastic syndrome. Just watch out for any of the painted on markings if you want to keep them.



Ultimately, I'm extremely happy I picked this dude up, so much so that I picked one up for my brother for his birthday as well.

The two main issues I had with him is gone. I permanently fixed the chest/rear of the cockpit in place so that his chest is cleaner. The other was the moire dirt pattern which the alcohol took care of.

That just leaves me with what I'm going to do with him colorwise so if anyone has suggestions, I'm open. I actually don't mind the grey now that it's not deadened by the dirt so I was thinking a simple inkwash, panel lining, plus whatever other details I could bring out. Also weighing if I should be as accurate as possible or add some flyboy/pilot livery like the skull n crossbones. It wouldn't be accurate to the movie but it would give it more life.

That could work. At first I thought it might throw off the color in alt mode but if I just painted the thighs from the hip swivel to the knee joint while following the jet's natural curves and shape, it should be fine. Thanks!

 

No problem. It's one of the few things i personally wanted to do but haven't took the time to do so. This mold is so fun and i really hope Hasbro doesn't make it a one-and-done deal

 

For real. Lots of potential in this mold.

 

I completely forgot that this figure existed. Love seeing the pictures of the dirt removed.

I wonder if there is a way to improve his head with some extra paint. One of this figure's flaws imo is that the his head seems to get lost when viewing from a distance. Since his body mostly light colored, yet his head is all so dark. Like, maybe it could stand out more with some highlights around his eyes, or mouthplate. Or even just a bright blue visor.

 

I think the head is fine as it's accurate to Maverick's in the movie. The real issue is the one you pointed out, his head being so flameboyant it makes the rest of the figure be so tame/flat by comparison.

 

He could really use some more blue in robot mode. If I got him, I'd probably try and paint the black robot mode-only parts to match the helmet, and maybe add a few red accents here and there as well.
